ERRA International Fusion on Camp Foster is more than a cozy little restaurant atop a hill. It’s a warm environment where you can connect with friends old and new. It’s a quiet eatery for a date with your spouse. It’s a place to unwind and enjoy a beverage while watching a game. It’s a little piece of home you crave, with a surprise element you have to taste to believe. Executive Chef Gabriel Gomez, CCC, offers patrons new and exciting trends from around the world, which allows TERRA’s menu to be fluid. Guests can be bold and choose one of Chef Gomez’s newer creations off the Chef ’s Specials menu, like the Oven Roasted Spanish Mackerel over Oki-

nawan Sweet Potatoes. It may look like a healthy portion of white fish over potatoes with a sauce, which you could find at many restaurants, but that is where the similarity ends. Chef Gomez uses a clever flavor in the sauce you would never expect, and you may find yourself forgetting your table manners and licking your plate clean. TERRA also offers international favorites, like the Authentic Beef Enchilada (pictured above), complete with a mole sauce guaranteed to render you speechless… because you will not want to put your fork down. This dish, along with many others, is a menu staple, encouraging you to return for another helping anytime. Even though the staff

ulldog Burgers will soon open a convenient location inside the Foster Bowling Center, so those that live and work nearby can pick up a Sunrise Sandwich, a juicy burger or a scrumptious hot dog! For a reasonable $5, grab a Breakfast Bowl, featuring scrambled eggs, your choice of sausage or bacon and breakfast potatoes topped with cheese. They also have two delicious breakfast burritos fit for your consumption.

When chow call sounds, head back over to Bulldogs Burgers for a gut-busting feast. Choose from the standard Original Bulldog Burger, the mouth-stretching Double Stack, the Mushroom and Swiss for the erudite, or, if you are not in the mood for a burger, go for Leatherneck Hot Dog or Chicken Sandwich. All burgers are handcrafted with 100 percent beef. Each hearty menu item is bold, fearless,

and like all great food, simple. It’s America between two toasted buns. Want a burger or sandwich, but not the carbs? Bulldogs also offers a Cheeseburger Salad, or a Chicken Avocado Salad. Either way, anything you choose from the Bulldogs Burger menu is sure to fill you up, but make you crave more. For more information, visit mccsokinawa.com/bulldogs.

Uchinâguchi

id you know Japanese is not the native tongue of the Okinawan people? There are six languages on Okinawa, collectively called the Ryukyu Shôgô, and in 2009, they were placed on the UNESCO endangered language list. Spoken for over 700 years in the Ryukyu Kingdom, Uchinâguchi, the language of the Shuri-Naha area, is rarely spoken on the island today. It is widely considered a dialect of Japanese, as was propagandized by the Japanese government during its initial occupation of Okinawa. From 1879 to 1949, Okinawa was annexed by Japan. Political positions were overtaken by Japanese officials, and education on Okinawa was standardized to meet Japanese requirements. Thus, Japanese was taught in schools, and over time, the Okinawan people assimilated into

the language—by necessity. Children were punished in school for speaking their native language, and the idea that Uchinâguchi was a second-class language was impressed on the Okinawan people. Despite the mainstream eradication of Uchinâguchi, influences of its existence remain; Child Development Centers on Camps Courtney, Foster, Kinser are named in native Okinawan language, as are many off-base establishments. Today, Japanese remains the

dominant language on Okinawa. If you’re interested in studying the language and learning about more of the history of how it came to be on Okinawa, consider attending classes offered by the Marine & Family Programs Branch. Basic Japanese, Survival Japanese and Survival Japanese Writing classes are all offered for FREE on Marine Corps bases island-wide. Visit mccsokinawa.com/culturalawareness for dates and times.

If you have any burning questions about Japanese culture, please send them to OLW@okinawa.usmc-mccs.org.

id you know less than 50 percent of Americans have a savings plan? Money is one of the leading causes for stress in American adults. Through nationwide programs like Military Saves and America Saves, we can all learn some tips on fiscal responsibly like how to manage debt, budgeting, building credit and more. Entering its 15th year, Military Saves was originally formed as an off-shoot of America Saves to focus on increasing financial health and wellness within the military community. The main focus of the program is to encourage saving as a means to financial freedom for a lifetime. The campaign partners with the military installation’s Personal Financial Management teams to develop a culture supporting wise financial behavior. February is Military Saves Month throughout the Department of Defense. The MCCS Personal Financial Management center is joining forces

with local organizations such as onbase credit unions and banks, military exchanges and commissaries to highlight the importance of financial readiness and the military’s yearround financial readiness campaign.
