Get down, get dirty and get muddy!

t’s primal, written into our DNA since the dawn of humankind. Children know it instinctively, without even being taught or guided. Mud. Is. Fun. Playing in the mud is the cleanest filthy fun one can have, and the child inside all of us never forgets this. Whether it’s a repressed longing to charge outside in the rain while yelling joyfully like a maniac and taking a running dive headfirst down a slippery muddy hill, sprinting through an ankle-deep, 50-yard-long mud puddle splashing everyone in the vicinity or crawling up the slippery slope of a mini-mudmountain—we all remember the joys of mud deep down inside us. If this resonates with you, then rejoice; MCCS Okinawa is going to offer a golden opportunity to unleash that inner-kid and get down, get

dirty and get muddy at the 2015 Camp Hansen World Famous Mud Run. The muddiest and funnest event of the year will be taking place on Camp Hansen on Saturday, April 25. This “doronko” (Japanese for mud) race will consist of a 5K or 10K jaunt through mud trails and obstacles in the jungles of Camp Hansen. The event is open to participants island wide—both SOFA ID card holders and Japanese citizens. For those in the mood for some conquering, there will be competitive 5K and 10K races for individuals with awards given to the first, second and third place male and female finishers in each category. Teams of three can compete in a separate 10K race against fellow mud-trios with awards going to the top three. For those that just want to come out for a leisurely muddy frolic, there will be 5K and

10K waves in which the only competition will consist of who takes the most spectacular spill suitable for immediate uploading to a social media site or who is sporting the wackiest costume and/or makeup. Actual kids can participate alongside the young-at-heart on 500 meter (for kids 5 to 9 years of age) and 1K (for kids 10 to 14 years of age) fun runs on a separate course. The action begins at 8:15 a.m. with the individuals competing in the 5K hitting the course. At 8:45 a.m., competitors (both individual and team) in the 10K will start. The non-competitive runners in both the 5K and 10K categories will be broken into Continues page 3.

two groups with the first wave starting at 9:15 a.m. and the second at 9:45 a.m. The Kids’ Fun Runs will begin at 9 a.m. After the race, the fun continues for all as a Mud Run mini-fest will also take place with the ever-popular MCCS Funland featuring various bouncers, a rock-climbing wall, a whizzer, bungee, the pirate ship and tubs-of-fun. Vendors hawking post-race food and liquid refreshment will be onsite as well as musical entertainment and prize giveaways rounding out the day. Prizes include overnight stays at a local resort courtesy of Kafuu Resort Fuchaku CONDO HOTEL, Moon Ocean Ginowan Hotel & Resort, Moon Beach Resort, Tokyo Daiichi Hotel Okinawa Grand Mer Resort and ANA Intercontinental Manza Beach Resort. This will be an opengate event and Camp Hansen will be open to local Japanese. Online registration for the 2015 Camp Hansen World Famous Mud Run will be accepted at mccsokinawa. com/mudr un

Training for the Mud Run

ourtney: Hey, do you know where I can find some mud? I need to start practicing. Ryan: For what, going porcine? You are doing a fine job at that I must say. C: No, but that gives me an excellent idea for a costume. I’m signing up for the Camp Hansen World Famous Mud Run, but it occurred to me that I’ve never run in mud before. Having almost finishing a marathon once you’re the closest thing to an “expert” on runs. If it hadn’t been for all that ice cream, you might have finished. Do you have any training tips for me? R: First, don’t eat ice cream before or during the run…unless you like the runs. Second, having some sort of cardiovascular base to start with might be beneficial. But the mud run isn’t just a regular run—you’ll

encounter obstacles. So some muscular strength and conditioning would serve you well too. C: But, you don’t have to be a super athlete to run it either, right? I am pretty super in many other respects, but I only consider myself a moderately-super runner. I’m more concerned about what I’ll wear. I read some tips online that recommend tights or compression pants without pockets. Imagine how heavy all that mud would be in your pockets? I also read an un-

fortunate tale of a participant who didn’t have a drawstring on his shorts and paid the consequences. R: Clothing choices seem to be pretty important in a mud run (for more on mud run gear, see p.13). This is an athletic event, but you don’t necessarily need to be a hard-core athlete to participate unless you’re in a “conqueror” kind of mood like I always am. Okay, you’ve talked me into it, I’m participating too!

efore you set out for the mud run, make sure you have everything you need. Here’s a list of a few essentials: The Right Shoes: Having the right shoe for the job is most important— meaning they should fit well, have strong tread, and a breathable upper that will drain water/mud quickly. Some companies such as Inov-8 and Merrill have several models of mud run shoes on the market. On a similar note, it is ill-advised to duct-tape your shoes as it leaves a slick surface on the sole which can lead to slipping. The Right Outfit: Besides the right kicks, avoid cotton tops, bot-

toms and socks. Cotton will do nothing but absorb all the mud you touch and weigh you down. Same goes for pockets. Instead, aim for something light, like a running top, compression gear or bare skin. The Right Extras: It’ll be a good idea to bring lots of towels and a gallon or two of water to rinse off with. Baby wipes are great for a final run through to get all the grime off, and Q-tips are handy for globs of mud that get stuck in your ears and nose. A fresh set of clothes and some bags to separate your muddy clothes from your clean and dry existence will be most helpful.
