Child Abuse Awareness Month

hroughout the month of April, the Behavioral Health Family Advocacy Program is seeking to engage families in our community in discussions and spread awareness about child abuse. Children attending schools throughout Marine Corps Base Camp S.D. Butler are encouraged to participate in the “Children Thrive in Safe, Stable, Nurturing Homes” Poster Contest. Participants will design a poster that represents activities they do with their families, teachers or caregivers to promote a nurturing home. Submissions can be drawn, painted or digitally created— use your imagination! However, posters larger than a standard size poster board (22” x 28”) will not be accepted. All submissions must include the contestant’s name, grade and school. Entries can be given to the student’s DoDDS art teacher or

emailed to fapprevention@okinawa. usmc-mccs.org. Entries are accepted now and winners will be announced April 17. For more information, please call the Behavioral Health

Family Advocacy Program at 6452915. Additional information about support groups and classes offered by the program is available at mccsokinawa.com/ familyadvocacy.

rigami originated in China, where paper was first created in the first or second century, with the art of folding following soon after. The word “origami” comes from oru meaning to fold, and kami meaning paper. The earliest records of origami in Japan are from the Heian Period (A.D. 794 to1185). This was a time of artistic and cultural growth among Japan’s nobility. Paper was still a rare commodity and origami was a pastime afforded only by the elite. It wasn’t until the Edo Period (A.D. 1600–1868) that origami was enjoyed by the merchant class. The Japanese take paper folding to a different level—art of origami is no child’s play. In fact it was originally meant for adults. The tiny paper sculptures were used in both religious rites and in

gift giving. Serrated strips of paper marked sacred objects in shrines. One of the oldest forms of origami is the katashiro, a symbolic representation of a deity made with jingū yōshi, a special shrine paper. By the early 20th century, more than 150 patterns were developed. Today, most Japanese schools include basic origami designs as part of their curriculum, the most com-

plex being the tsuru, or paper crane. According to Japanese legend, if you make 1000 paper cranes, you will be granted a wish. If your wish is to learn origami, you don’t need to craft 1,000 cranes first, just visit the Camp Hansen Library (Bldg. 2412) on March 13 at 5:30 p.m. to learn the basics.
