hen you reach the very northern tip of the island you’ll find Cape Hedo, where the Pacific Ocean meets the East China Sea and on a clear day, you’ll have an unobstructed view of Yoron Island. Beneath the surface, Cape Hedo is known for its superb snorkeling and diving (though be mindful of unpredictable currents). Historically, Cape Hedo (then Cape Kunigami) was used as a nautical landmark for Commodore Matthew Perry and other ship captains of the 19th century. Today, you’ll find the monument marking the end of

inside

the 27-year U.S. occupation of Okinawa. Another monument commemorates the friendship between Yoron Island and Kunigami Village, where the cape is located; it’s the Statue of Kariyushi—an animal with the body of a fish and the head of a bird. The postcard-worthy views make Cape Hedo a popular tourist spot with plenty of restaurants, shops, and amenities surrounding the site. To get to Cape Hedo, drive north on Hwy. 58 past Nago until you see signs for your destination.

he MCCS New Parent Support Program (NPSP) Ages & Stages Program is designed to provide parents with whatever assistance and education they need as they look forward to their children’s milestones. On March 21 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., the program will be hosting an open house where you can learn about nutrition, developmental milestones, community resources and more. Expectant parents and families with children up to five years of age are welcome to attend. In addition, you will be able to share ideas (and frustrations) with NPSP staff and other parents. Few tasks are as daunting as parenting, and the proper development of a newborn or young child is often an area of particular concern. Ages & Stages is here to provide you with whatever assistance you need—one stage at a time. For more information, please call 645-0396 or visit mccsokinawa. com/npsp.

L.I.N.K.S. for Spouses

ome say it’s smart to learn from the mistakes of others so you don’t make them yourself, and what better way to do that than to share and connect with people who have walked in similar shoes. Living in a military community presents its own unique challenges for spouses. L.I.N.K.S. (Lifestyle, Insights, Networking, Knowledge, and Skills) is a program taught by veteran spouses who volunteer to foster that support system for Marines, spouses, teens and kids. Being a military spouse is different from any life in the civilian world. Many spouses new to the military world feel uncertain and a bit nervous about what they’re getting into. Marine Corps Fam-

ily Team Building (MCFTB) is a program that provides educational resources and services to foster personal growth and enhance the readiness of Marine Corps families. L.I.N.K.S. for Spouses welcomes new and veteran spouses to network

and gain insight about available services, moving tips, deployments, and more. L.I.N.K.S. for Spouses will take place March 19 and 20 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Bldg. 5677 on Camp Foster. Register online at mccsokinawa.com/mcftb

Gochisou sama deshita. Thank you for the meal. For details about FREE Japanese language classes, please call Marine & Family Programs– Resources at 645-2104/2106.

ourtney: I think I’m addicted to ganban yoku. Ryan: Is that a Korean steak sauce? C: Nope. It’s a popular Japanese spa experience that has changed my life—and you know I’m not one to exaggerate. It involves napping on hot rocks. I think you’d enjoy it. R: I like that it involves napping. I don’t like that it doesn’t involve steaks. I like napping on my waterbed. What’s the appeal of napping on hot rocks? Why not just nap on a hot sidewalk? C: Well, you see, these aren’t your run-of-the-mill rocks. The rocks involved with ganban yoku have a bit of magic. The spas have slabs of black silica, granite and other stones that emit infrared rays, negative ions and have healing properties to them. The stones are also heated to between 40 and 50 degrees Celsius so as you lie on them, you sweat profusley.

Hot Rocks

R: So by “magic” you mean sweat? You will sweat anytime you get hot. For example, I sweat when I go to the bathroom or think about Sailor Moon combing my hair. C: More like magic sweat. It’s not the stinky, sticky sheen that you produce from working out at the gym or roasting on the beach. This perspiration comes from your sebum glands and feels totally different. In fact, they say you shouldn’t shower for at least two hours after ganban yoku

so your skin can enjoy the benefits of the magic sweat. It produces zero sweaty-person smell and makes your skin feel as soft as a baby’s. In addition to being a detox, ganban yoku also boosts metabolism, circulation and your immune system, producing effects like anti-aging, weight loss, improved concentration, better sleep and pain relief. kinawa is a small island with a huge history. While you’re here it would be a loss not to soak in as much of the culture and language as you can. MCCS Marine & Family Programs–Resources offers workshops and classes to help make the most of your tour on Okinawa. From traditional Okinawan arts and crafts to language and cooking classes, our cultural team is here to help you make Okinawa home. The Marine & Family Programs– Resources Cultural Relations Programs include Survival Japanese Language and Writing classes to help you

learn basics of the language to use out in town. There are also courses that will take you to grocery stores off-base like Commissary Curiosities/Hamby Town Tour, Uruma Grocery Store Tour and Kinser Field Trip. If you’re the crafty type, try the Washi Egg making class— a method of making colored eggs using washi paper, glue and varnish. There is even a class showing you the intricacies of the Japanese tea ceremony. For more information on these classes, visit mccsokinawa.com/mfp-r.
