hen you reach the very northern tip of the island you’ll find Cape Hedo, where the Pacific Ocean meets the East China Sea and on a clear day, you’ll have an unobstructed view of Yoron Island. Beneath the surface, Cape Hedo is known for its superb snorkeling and diving (though be mindful of unpredictable currents). Historically, Cape Hedo (then Cape Kunigami) was used as a nautical landmark for Commodore Matthew Perry and other ship captains of the 19th century. Today, you’ll find the monument marking the end of

the 27-year U.S. occupation of Okinawa. Another monument commemorates the friendship between Yoron Island and Kunigami Village, where the cape is located; it’s the Statue of Kariyushi—an animal with the body of a fish and the head of a bird. The postcard-worthy views make Cape Hedo a popular tourist spot with plenty of restaurants, shops, and amenities surrounding the site. To get to Cape Hedo, drive north on Hwy. 58 past Nago until you see signs for your destination.

he MCCS New Parent Support Program (NPSP) Ages & Stages Program is designed to provide parents with whatever assistance and education they need as they look forward to their children’s milestones. On March 21 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., the program will be hosting an open house where you can learn about nutrition, developmental milestones, community resources and more. Expectant parents and families with children up to five years of age are welcome to attend. In addition, you will be able to share ideas (and frustrations) with NPSP staff and other parents. Few tasks are as daunting as parenting, and the proper development of a newborn or young child is often an area of particular concern. Ages & Stages is here to provide you with whatever assistance you need—one stage at a time. For more information, please call 645-0396 or visit mccsokinawa. com/npsp.
