ife is complicated, but we are simple. We’re also pretty smart. We’re so smart that we make things complex when they aren’t. A gentle breeze, puppies or enjoying sata andagi become romanced as “simple pleasures” but they aren’t any more complicated, smart or important than we are. But, if anyone had to choose between sata andagi and puppies or humans, you know who would win. Like you, the sata andagi (meaning sugar, deep fried) is made of simple ingredients—flour sugar and eggs mixed into a ball and deep fried. Crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, the sata andagi is a cross between a sugar cookie and an old-fashioned doughnut. If you love food, being happy isn’t a difficult thing. And even if you aren’t, a food lover and a non-food lover are made of the same stuff. Happiness isn’t com-

inside

plicated when you realize that it can be created with three ingredients and a deep fryer. Sata andagi isn’t as commercially successful as other Okinawan cuisines like Okinawa soba or gÔyâ champurû. You see them mostly in tourist shops or an Okinawan grandma’s kitchen. But it’s so widely loved you might wonder why. Sata andagi isn’t one for fanfare. Perfecting its form is what’s important. Sata andagi is a staple of Okinawan cuisine. In the end, you and the sata andagi are of equal significance in this world, but the donut’s legacy will probably live on much longer than you. To learn more about this, and many other unique aspects of Okinawan culture, check out Marine and Family Programs-Resources cultural workshops at mccsokinawa.com/culturalawareness.

eing a lifeguard is harder work than one might think. It’s not all sunglasses and sauntering in the sun. All lifeguards will be trained for CPR and AED, how to identify a distressed swimmer, an active or passive drowning victim and how to care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, and a handful of other skills one needs to save lives this summer. Think you’ve got what it takes? Semper Fit Aquatics is holding Lifeguard Classes for those interested in gaining the knowledge and skills needed to prevent and respond to aquatic emergencies. The course prepares participants to recognize and respond to emergencies to prevent drowning and injuries. Classes will be held at the Foster 25M Pool. For current openings, check mccsokinawa.com/ jobs. For details about the course, visit Semper Fit Aquatics online at mccsokinawa.com/aquatics or call 645-7554/098-970-7554. Participants must be 15 years old by the last day of class.

Family Child Care

B

y recognizing an increased demand for child care services, Family Child Care (FCC) was established by MCCS Children, Youth & Teen Programs to be a small, professionally-managed home-based care center. FCC providers offer a nurturing, safe and meaningful environment to encourage, promote and develop each child’s unique qualities and abilities. With desirable enrollment levels, on-going training and regulatory compliance guidelines, patrons receive the highest quality of care. With the growing demand for child care and the limited number of available facilities for center-based services, FCC is a cost-efficient benefit

to the military community. In many cases patrons pay the same weekly tuition rates as their counterparts at the child development centers. For more information on the

program, or to learn how to become a provider, visit the FCC Office on Camp Foster in building 495 or mccsokinawa.com/family_child_ care or call 645-2174.

Japanese Business Culture

ourtney: I feel pretty lucky to have a job on Okinawa, but since I work on a Marine Corps base, I’m not getting an authentic Japanese work experience. Can we start by doing group exercises in the mornings? Ryan: You mean rajio taiso? Yes, we can do that. And you can start wearing a suit and working extra hours per day. Also, since I have seniority over you, you can start doing everything I ask. Get me some glazed donuts, a cup of coffee and acne cream. C: Whoa, what? How about we just do the fun parts, like group exercise? And maybe I can start eating bento lunches instead of Taco Bell every day. Japanese companies can’t be that draconian. Aren’t there some funny Japanese office pranks or something? R: Not really—although this is changing, the Japanese work environment is traditionally based around the lifetime-employment

model and is known for long hours and a strong devotion to one’s company. Regular 12-hour days are just one of the ways that an employee demonstrates loyalty to the company. C: I am reconsidering my request to experience Japanese work culture, unless I can also start receiving better bonuses. Is it difficult to get promotions within Japanese companies if most people stay at the same business indefinitely? R: The downturn in the Japanese economy has pretty much elimi-

nated the “job for life” and many companies that used to take care of their workforce are now laying off employees by the thousands. Many employees in Japan today are just happy to have a humdrum job with minimum benefits—just like many other places in the world. By Ryan Anastoplus and Courtney Rick

n 1893, Eugen Sandow, a strongman performer at the Chicago World’s Fair, invented modern bodybuilding. It was called “muscle display performances,” and carnival audiences were more impressed by Sandow’s physique than what he could actually do with the muscles. Sandow represented “The Grecian

Ideal,” a “perfect physique” modeled after classical Greek and Roman sculptures, and was the first person to build his body to an aesthetic standard and profit from it. Bodybuilding today has grown beyond a carnival trick, though the end goal of muscular aesthetics remains intact. The MCCS Far East

Bodybuilding Competition is back as one of MCCS Semper Fit’s biggest events of the year. Bodybuilders throughout the Pacific will gather at the on August 2, sure to bring a spectacle of pecs, delts, abs, quads and more. There’s plenty of time to get ready, so prepare now.

hough curling up with a good book is something we normally do by ourselves, the joys of reading can and should be shared. In a book club, reading is a social activity. Joining a book club can expand your horizons, opening your palate up to titles and genres you may have not considered reading before. You can also hear new perspectives, make new friends and be more engaged with what you’re reading. The MCCS Libraries hold monthly adult book clubs at camps across the island. MCAS Futenma has theirs on the fourth Tuesday of each month, Camp Schwab meets on every third Tuesday and Camp Foster meets on every third Wednesday.

Camps Kinser and Hansen have their book club meetings on the first Wednesday of the month and Camp Courtney’s club meets on the first Friday of the month. If these meeting times don’t fit your schedule, check out a book club kit, a stack of 10 books to start a book club of your own. From contemporary titles such as Outliers by Malcom Gladwell, The Rosie Project by Graeme Simsion and classics like Virginia Woolf ’s Mrs. Dalloway and The Bell Jar by Sylvia Plath, there is something for everyone.
