hough Ryukyu glass is a well known Okinawan gem today, it was not always a recognized craft. One of the main raw materials for making glass is silica sand, something that is not naturally found on the island. Okinawa has many beaches, but the tiny grains found on the shore are actually coral, not silica. After WWII, there was an abundance of used glass cola bottles that were brought to the island by the United States military. Artists collected these bottles to use as a raw material in glass blowing, melting them down to make new hand-blown glass items. Ryukyu glass became known for its vibrant bluegreen hue created by the recycled bottles. By using the

recycled materials, bubbles would form within the glass. Instead of looking at the bubbles as a defect, the craftsmen employed them as a design aesthetic. The unique and one-of-a-kind appeal of the glass made them so popular that many people started asking for custom glass to be made for them. When the artists did not have enough materials on hand, customers would bring them used cola bottles. For a truly original and handmade keepsake, check out Ryukyu glassware. Tourists can visit the Nago Glass Factory as part of the Tours+ Northern Highlights Tour. For details, please see page 7 or visit mccsokinawa.com/tours.

Shisa Pizza Opening Delayed

e regret that the article on page 53 of the May issue of Okinawa Living Magazine, stating that a Shisa Pizza would be opening in the Plaza Housing Area during the month of May, is no longer accurate. This project has recently encountered unexpected construction delays requiring materials to be ordered from CONUS, thus making the planned May opening date impossible to meet. As soon as a definitive opening date is known for Shisa Pizza we will disseminate that information using all available channels. In the meantime, please note that Bulldogs Burgers and Sumo Burrito will be

ising summer temperatures usually result in the trade between heavy winter clothes for a lighter summer fare. For some Japanese this means pulling out their yukata, a lighter alternative to the kimono. The yukata, literally translated to mean bathing clothes, originated from the Heian period, between 794–1194, and was worn by noblemen during steam baths. The robe functioned as a protective layer in order to keep the hot steam from touching the skin. Over time it was worn by Japanese warriors and eventually by common citizens coming and going to public bathhouses. Today, the yukata is still worn at traditional Japanese inns, known as ryokan but is not limited to serving as a bathing robe. The yukata is more frequently worn to summer festivals, including the summer dance festival, Bon-Odori, and fireworks displays, preceding

Yukata

its increased popularity as a summer garment. When fitting a yukata as well as kimono, it is important to ensure that the left side of the robe is wrapped over the right. The opposite, wrapping the right over the left side, should be avoided since that is the way a kimono is wrapped around a body at a funeral. The yukata comes in general sizes, and the length is determined by the

how the robe is fastened. The excess fabric of the yukata is wrapped and then secured with a sash. For private wear, the yukata can be loosely fastened with an accompanying sash. For casual public outings, the robe is fastened with a wider sash than is used when securing the robe in private. When attending festivals, the robe is secured with a traditional obi. The robe is generally accessorized with geta, wooden sandals.
