our stomach starts to grumble at around 1 p.m. You call your friend Steve to see if he wants to grab some lunch with you. “Sorry, I just ate,” he says. “Had some pretty good sushi at—” you hang up, not really in the mood for sushi anyway. You put your hand on your stomach and hear an echo as you swallow the last gulp of cold, stale coffee and head down the hallway of your office. You pop your head in your friend’s office, “Dave, eat lunch yet?” Dave pulls his head out from a mound of papers, “No, I’m starving.” Grab your keys, wallet and load up in Dave’s Honda. “Where to?” he asks.

inside

You don’t know. “Well, what do you feel like eating?” Dave sighs with one arm resting on the steering wheel and the other pressing into his eyes. “Steve told me about this good sushi—” “Not sushi.” You gaze into the empty road ahead of you. From here, the options are many. Burgers. Burritos. Steak. Curry. Frozen yogurt. New restaurants are opening on bases islandwide faster than you can say “I’m in the mood for whatever.” Get your fresh-wrapped burritos or Asian inspired beef/pork/chicken and veggie bowls made to order at Sumo Burrito or

jumbo burgers at Bulldogs Burgers. Beginning later this year, you can go for an opulent prime cut of beef at Taiyo Steakhouse or an international foray of Indian, Japanese and Thai curries at Curry Dojo. Of course for dessert today, get frozen yogurt at Yo’ishii! Frozen Yogurt with all the toppings including granola, Nilla wafers, gummy bears, Oreo crumbles, sprinkles and nuts. It’s hard to go wrong. In this special restaurant issue of Okinawa Living Weekly, we’ll talk about all the new MCCS restaurant offerings so you’ll never find yourself at a loss during the most crucial 60 minutes of your day.

Customer Reviews Went to the Bulldogs Burgers on Monday night with my family and the food was phenomenal! I enjoyed the bacon burger and my wife loved her mushroom burger. All ingredients were fresh and far exceeded our expectations.”

Great staff and atmosphere at Sumo Burrito! Having the choice of burrito or bowl definitely makes it feel like you’re eating at a well-known establishment back home. The ingredients were very fresh and my wife loved the house-made guacamole.”

We have a new family tradition thanks to Yo’ishii Frozen Yogurt—frozen yogurt Fridays! Love all the flavors and toppings combinations. I especially enjoy the matcha flavor with Oreo crumbles and granola.”

O

Bigger Burgers are Better

ne is more human when eating a burger. It’s the closest you get to the call of the wild. It doesn’t take a complex palate to feel the twitching of your soul with each bite of a real burger. A burger’s burger. A Bulldogs Burger. A Bulldogs Burger overtakes you as you indulge in every whim of this earth-tone hedonism and realizing, mid-bite, with your fingers aglow with grease, that you’re nothing more than an animal, a simple creature who just wants to feel good. And with a hazy glare of absolution, appears an empty plate

strewn with balled-up napkins and a subtle smear of ketchup.

At Bulldogs Burgers here is something for every class of burger admirer—from the standard Original

Bulldogs Burger, the mouth-stretching Double Stack, the Mushroom and Swiss for the erudite, or if you’re not in the mood for a burger, go for the Leatherneck Hot Dog or Chicken Sandwich. All burgers are handcrafted with 100% beef. Each hearty menu item is bold, fearless, and like all great food, simple. It’s America between two toasted buns. Every menu item can be made into a set with your choice of sweet potato fries, French fries, onion pedals and a drink. Side items include chili cheese fries, cheeseburger salad, cup of chili and more.

A Celebration of Flavor

t Curry Dojo, having an appetite is enough reason to celebrate. The curry’s romance with your gut starts in a curry bar with 13 different choices. What results is a strong selection of curries that, in a perfect world, would all have their own movements in a Vivaldi symphony. Featuring Japanese, Indian and Thai curries, the Dojo bridges the gap between Okinawa and our curry brothers across the world. And, if done correctly, Curry Dojo will also bridge the gap between you and a larger pants size. It’s that good. It may be tough to forgo a Japanese Chicken Cutlet Curry that makes you feel like you’re wearing Cinderella’s shoe, but with a Chicken Biryani that plays the beauty to your beast, you’ll probably be fine without it. If your tongue ever grows complacent with the comfier curries, whip it back into shape with the sinus-clearing Thai green curry. If you want to go with a safe, tried and true taste, the Chicken Tikka Masala is always a good choice.

Choose a side. Have your curry with rice or naan, it’s up to you.

Let’s not forget the appetizers, which include sides like tandoori chicken, samosas and naan bread. Build your curry in any combination using a bed of basmati rice, jas-

mine rice, lemon rice or sticky rice. Garnish your meal at the condiment bar with toppings like fried onions, almonds, toasted coconut, mango chutney, cilantro chutney and more.

The Perfect Finale

Clockwise from the top right: Thomas Alan Smilie, bigstock.com/gyesk

istory is marked by great finales—the final showdown between Rocky and Apollo Creed, Keyser Soze strolling away with his corrected gait, George Costanza’s fiancé Susan dying from toxic envelopes in Seinfeld, or Monica and Chandler getting married on Friends. Endings. Resolutions. Closure. It’s so important to a narrative, even if the narrative is food. The best finale of all is dessert. The right dessert gives sweet closure to every meal and ensures a satisfied appetite. After a filling meal at any one of our new restaurants, a finale at Yo’ishii! Frozen Yogurt cannot go wrong. At Yo’ishii!, you create your own “finale” by choosing your desired yogurt flavor and toppings— this should be approached as seriously and ceremoniously as possible. While you begin with an empty paper cup, you can end with something as modest as vanilla with orange slices

or a diary Liberace of gummy bears and hot caramel fudge. Yo’ishii! Frozen Yogurt offers a wide-variety of frozen yogurt flavors such as chocolate, raspberry, banana, strawberry, matcha, dulce de leche and more. But frozen yogurt without toppings is like pizza without toppings. It’s what accountants and your high school English Litera-

ture teacher eat. Choose between an array of toppings including granola, Nilla wafers, gummy bears and gummy worms, Oreo crumbles, sprinkles and nuts. Fruit and hot toppings include choices such as fresh bananas, oranges, hot fudge and caramel. Add proper finality to your meal and your day at your nearest Yo’ishii! Frozen Yogurt.
