M

emorial Day is more than BBQ’s and time off work. It’s a time to reflect on those we’ve lost in all the conflicts dating back to the Civil War. Service members' graves are decorated as a small token of gratitude for their ultimate sacrifice to our country. Many men and women have died in service to our country, and it’s the least we can do to pause and reflect on how many have given their lives so we all can enjoy our freedoms and way of life. We at MCCS are here for service members past and present, and would like to extend a heartfelt "thank you" for your service. In honor of those who gone before us, MCCS would like to make your lives a little easier this Memorial Day Week-

Diving the USS Emmons

he USS Emmons (DD-457/ DMS-22) served as a destroyer in the Atlantic Ocean before being transferred to the Pacific Ocean to serve as a minesweeper. During the Battle of Okinawa on the morning of April 7, 1945 the USS Emmons finally sank below the surface and embarked on eternal patrol. There are articles, tours and websites dedicated to the historic ship. For all that you can read about the USS Emmons, nothing can really prepare you for the incredible experience of actually seeing the old ship resting on the bottom. It is a privilege and an honor to visit the 60 Sailors who lost their lives and pay your respects. The dive site is a short boat ride from ports in northern Motubu, and the calm water and sunshine often belie the difficulty of the dive. After exiting the boat, you will drop approximately 110 to 130 feet, using

nothing but a rope to guide you and give reference. Your dive clock starts when you begin your descent, and you will have approximately 10 minutes to explore the 348-foot wreck. For $80, our experienced Tsunami SCUBA instructors will outfit you with the equipment and training necessary to get the most

out of your USS Emmons trip. The trip on May 29 includes two air or Nitrox tanks, weights, transportation to and from Camp Hansen to the marina, and boat charter to the northern reefs and USS Emmons. For more details, visit mccsokinawa. com/tsunamiscuba.

orking on your car can get very uncomfortable, especially if you don’t have the proper tools to get the job done. Taking your car to a proper shop and using one of their stalls is obviously a better choice, but that costs money and at least a tiny bit of the reason why you’re fixing your own car is attributed to being frugal.

Fear not, money savers. In honor of Memorial Day, Typhoon Motors on Camps Kinser, Courtney and Hansen are offering FREE stall rentals on Saturday May 27 from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. This way, you can fix your car comfortably and your wallet will be none the wiser. Framing Sale

I

Clockwise: ingimage.com, balaikin2009/bigstock.com

According to Hallmark, Father’s Day is the fourth largest card-giving occasion of the year. Why not try a frame this year instead?

s there a pile of red folders in a corner of your house collecting dust? Has your service member been presented some pretty neat promotion or parting gifts? Or maybe your house is relatively free of service specific memorabilia, but is full of drawings made by tiny little humans. Gather them all and head over to Foster Framing & Fine Arts and the Custom Shop for their Memorial Day Appreciation and Father’s Day

Sale. May 30 through June 3, they are offering 15% off material costs for custom frames, plaques and trophies. If you spend over $100, you get 25% off material costs. With Father’s Day just around the corner, now is the time to make something special for Dad. Is this his first Father’s Day? Have you taken some fun family photos at island hot spots? Commemorate Dad and all he does by gifting him a one-of-a-kind,

framed and matted collection of your favorite moments as a family. For more information, call 645-3674 or visit them online at mccsokinawa. com/framingandfinearts.
