kinawa is famous for its glass creations. This unique, handcrafted blown glass was not always a well-known Okinawan treasure. One of the main raw materials for making glass is sand, something that is not naturally found on the island. Okinawa has many beaches, but the tiny grains are actually coral, not sand. After WWII, an abundance of used glass cola bottles were brought to the island and left behind by the U.S. military. Artists collected these bottles to use as raw material in glass blowing, melting them down to make new handblown glass items. Ryukyu glass has its own distinct look due to its use of recycled materials. It is typified by its vibrant blue-green color and air bubbling set within the glass.
