s the saying goes, a bad day on the golf course is better than a good day at the office. And even better than that is a day on the course during a best-ball tournament, where your “blowup” holes are magically erased thanks to the talents of the other members of your foursome. When your drives soar straight and long, your approach shots land soft, and your putts roll true, you will be proud to contribute to your team’s score. And when you wipe that tee shot, chunk that chip or bury in a bunker, you will be thankful to have teammates to record their best-ball scores. Even though golf is primarily an individual sport, play-

ing a round or two as a team can make all the difference between a good or great day on the course, especially with prizes and bragging rights on the line.Taiyo Golf Club will host its annual 4-Person Best Ball Tournament on Saturday, June 10. This is a tee-time event and it will consist of four-person teams using 80 percent handicaps. The two best balls of each team will be used to determine the team’s overall score on each hole. Players may pick their own teams and both net and gross prizes will be awarded. The entry fee is $30 per person but does not include cart and green fees. The registration deadline is Wednesday, June 7.

or hundreds of years, when the fields were sown but the harvest far from ready, Ryukyu rice farmers found time for sport and entertainment. Each village had a tôgyû-jyo, or bullring. Instead of facing off against their prized livestock, these Eastern farmers allowed the animals to lock horns. There is no cheerseeking matador in a fancy suit. Ushi Ôrasê is a battle of brute strength and endurance between two hulking bulls, each weighing nearly a ton. The tradition of Ushi Ôrasê lives on in Okinawa, regaining its popularity after reversion, and there are matches nearly every week. The fighters are ranked and champions cosseted like favored children. More than 300 bulls make the rounds in tournaments at 14 rings scattered throughout Okinawa’s main island. Two of the larger events are in the spring and during the Gushikawa Matsuri in the fall. Thousands of

Bullfighting

fans will attend the festival and matches, which can last anywhere from a few minutes to almost an hour, and the winning bull over all the others is declared yokozuna and is paraded in a victory lap. This Father’s Day, June 18, Tours+ would like to take dad and family to see bullfighting at the Ishikawa

Dome in Uruma City from noon to 5 p.m. Adults are $35, children 13 to 18 are $24, children 3 through 12 are $24 and children up to 3 are FREE. Bring yen for lunch and purchases or pack your own lunch. Seats are not cushioned, so feel free to bring your own.

fter dad has opened his handmade presents and displayed his "World’s Greatest Dad" coffee cup, throw him in the car and take him kayaking this Father’s Day. One of the best ways to experience Okinawa is from the water. Kayaking brings you close to nature and lets you explore areas of the island that are otherwise inaccessible. It’s also a great way to get your muscles moving and disguise exercise as something fun. Okinawa offers opportunities for both ocean kayaking and river kayaking. Inlets and coves are generally good spots for ocean kayaking where the waters are often calm. Further north, you’ll find ideal conditions for river kayaking. The lush jungle area of Yanbaru offers mangrove-lined rivers. One of the largest mangrove forests is at the mouth of the Gesashi River in Higashi Village. The area is

considered to be one of the most diverse natural environments on island and a great spot to take in the sights from your kayak. MCCS
