ealing. Relaxation. Rebirth. These are the tenets that the Okinawa Marriott Resort & Spa was built upon. The 15-floor resort, located atop a hill in Nago City, offers breathtaking views of Nago Bay and the East China Sea on one side, and views of the delicately-manicured links of the Busena Country Club Golf Course and vistas of the untamed northern hills and forests on the other. The Okinawa Marriott Resort & Spa is a wellequipped Mecca of relaxation. The resort’s facilities include an indoor pool with a Jacuzzi, an outdoor pool featuring a large, twisting water slide for the young and the young-at-heart, an exotic garden pool, a “smart” training
inside
pool, a fully equipped fitness room, access to a beautiful, private beach, a chapel for exchanging marital vows, the creér du declêor spa and esthetic salon and much more. There is no place more lavish or well-equipped to unwind and cool down during the summer months. This resort was built especially for such purpose and nothing more. You will be in good hands as the vast facilities, services and staff are all focused on ensuring that every guest experiences the virtues on which it was built. Wish you were there? You can be on June 17 with MCCS Tours+. Contact your local Tours+ office or visit mccsokinawa.com/tours to book your spot today. Go on, you deserve it.

rab your fins and get ready for some fun! On July 28, Tours+ is heading out to the Kerama Islands on a snorkeling adventure. Just 20 miles southeast of Okinawa and visible with the naked eye from Naha Port, these islands feature one of the best dive sites in the world. While snorkeling in the Keramas is spectacular, diving there is even better! Tsunami SCUBA’s open water certification course can take you from newbie to certified diver in only one week. Beginning in the classroom, your dive instructor will review everything you need to know to be comfortable in the water, including dive theory, safety and how all that complicatedlooking equipment will keep you breathing underwater. If you’re interested in the Kerama Islands Tour, visit mccsokinawa. com/tours. For details on getting dive certified, go to mccsokinawa. com/tsunamiscuba.

ourtney: I really can’t understand how my neighbors get by without blasting their air conditioners all the time. I see their doors and windows open pretty regularly while I barricade myself inside my climatecontrolled apartment. Ryan: There are no secrets, no escapes. They’ve just grown accustomed to suffering. To the outside observer, one would just think that they aren’t bothered by the heat. But no, it’s a tropical purgatory. C: Well, I did learn about a couple of Okinawan vegetables that are supposed to help cool your body from the inside out. Gobô (burdock root)
helps reduce swelling caused by heat, green papaya eliminates body heat and gôyâ (bitter melon) helps with fatigue caused by heat. I heard eel is a popular summertime food here too for the same reasons. Have you tried any of these? R: No, but I have tried, hiashi somen— long thin noodles chilled with ice with dipping sauce. Of course, nothing beats a mound of shaved ice, or kakigôri, either. C: I’ve also noticed many locals switch to different business apparel when the temperature rises—they ditch the longsleeved, button-up shirts in favor of short-sleeved, Hawaiian-esque shirts.
R: The movement for breezier business was a decision made by the Japanese Ministry of the Environment. The idea is that by dressing more casually in the office, we could reduce our air conditioner usage. It’s called the Cool Biz campaign. C: I’m all about supporting good causes. I’m going to talk to our boss about participating in Super Cool Biz so we can start wearing jeans and sandals every day. Perhaps it would be best if we work at the beach too.
