Traditionally, the winter holidays are about sharing good times and festive meals with loved ones—making them very merry. However, for someone living thousands of miles away from family, friends and the familiar sights and sounds of home, the holidays can appear to be tinged a very different shade. Holiday blues—the feelings of loss or sadness that some experience during the holiday season—most often strike when people are away from home.
Even for those that are here with family, the holidays can mean busy schedules, party planning, shopping, pressure and a fair amount of stress. Finances can also be a source of stress—overspending during the holidays can increase tensions as people try to make ends meet while ensuring everyone on their gift list is “happy.” Physical demands, including the strain of shopping during the busiest time of year and finding the time to wrap your purchases, attending social gatherings and preparing holiday meals can simply wipe people out. Feeling exhausted increases stress, creating a vicious cycle.
To help alleviate the holiday stress and help chase away the blues, MCCS will once again be offering many activities to make Okinawa, mainland Japan, South Korea and Guam “Your Home for the Holidays.” Events include activities that promote healthy stress-free living, FREE athletic tournaments for Marines and Sailors, FREE events and meals at SMP centers throughout the holiday season and much, much more.
This year’s offerings include drawings for FREE Holiday Meals-To-Go packages, holiday movies, ugly sweater contests galore, FREE cocoa and holiday goodies, athletic tournaments, FREE tours and bowling…and this is just the tip of the iceberg for those stationed on Okinawa, Camp Fuji in mainland Japan, Camp Mujuk in South Korea and Camp Blaz on Guam.
Check out www.okinawa.usmc-mccs.org/holidays for a full listing of 2024–2025 Your Home for the Holidays offerings and learn how you can take advantage of these FREE events, entertainment and more to make your holiday season merry and bright.

feedback from the ICE Program and Facebook
We had a wonderful experience with EGA [Excellence Gymnastics Academy] and all the staff. They are very caring about the kids’ needs and abilities. While she was enrolled at EGA, I have had the opportunity to watch my daughter grow and become confident and successful. Although we have recently moved back to the States, EGA set her up with the opportunity to become a competitive gymnast in the future— she has really honed her skills through their guidance.

Marine Corps Family Team Building recently held a crafting event that featured film and fun and this was the best-planned craft event I’ve been to in the four years I’ve been on Okinawa. The staff brought plenty of craft options and had things for kids to do such as coloring pages, bean bags and a movie if they weren’t interested in the crafts. All of it was themed and related, the staff was friendly, and they had more than enough materials for everyone. I cannot say enough great things about this event! I hope this event continues next year, and I would absolutely love to see them host one like this during the school year. My kids have said that was one of their favorite things they did all summer. A HUGE thank you to the staff who put this event on!

A few guys from our unit got to run in the POW/ MIA 5K today and we wanted to thank JB Baker and MCCS Okinawa Semper Fit for putting on such a great event! Being the only USSF Guardians out there with the other branches was a huge morale booster. It was a great way to honor those before us and those who shouldn’t be forgotten. Thank you for putting on this event! Hope to see similar things in the future that bring everyone from all branches together.

The entire staff at the Camp Foster Library is amazing and should be not only be recognized but also commended! Tokyo Grand Sumo Tour
Witness Japan’s National Sport
Although sumo wrestling dates back nearly 2,000 years, the spectator aspect of the sport wasn’t well established until the early 1600s. Sumo is a gladiatorial battle that involves strategy, strength, speed, stamina and a surprising amount of ritual. Many aspects of sumo are tied to Shinto, a religion originating from Japan that centers itself around kami (divine spirits). At first, sumo was a way to honor the kami during various festivals but has since grown in notoriety and has become a must-view event when in Japan.
Over the centuries, millions of foreigners have visited the country to witness Japan’s national sport and the ceremonial clashes between sumo powerhouses upon packed-earth “rings” called dohyo . Sumo is about much more than leveraging strength and body mass, it’s almost a complex and savage dance filled with symbolism and history. Watching sumo can also be a spiritual experience as you experience the different solemn rituals that go hand-in-hand with each match. Want to be on the sidelines rooting on your favorite rikishi, or sumo wrestler? Join MCCS Tours+ January 17–20 for their Tokyo Grand Sumo Tour! Register at any Tours+ office before December 18. On top of seeing traditional matches, you will also be able to learn more about the rich cultural history behind the ancient sport. For more information, visit www. okinawa.usmc-mccs.org/tours

Thanksgiving Birdies
Taiyo Turkey Shoot
Golf is a game with a number of birds in its vocabulary—the birdie, the mighty eagle, the ever-elusive and rare albatross and yes, even the turkey! According to golfcompendium.com, it’s a slang term that refers to a dreaded quadruple bogey. However, many other sources, such as PGA Play, have a much better definition—it’s making three consecutive birdies during one round!
One way or another, nothing says November like turkey. And what’s better than a Thanksgiving turkey? How about a round of competitive golfing and winning a Thanksgiving turkey? Get in the holiday spirit with Taiyo Golf Club’s 2024 Turkey Shoot happening on November 16 with a 7 a.m. shotgun start.
For this tournament, two-player teams will compete in a best-ball
format. Each player will play their own ball and record their scores and the lowest of the two scores will determine the team’s score. Gross and net prizes will be given to the winners along with Thanksgiving turkeys!
The Taiyo 2024 Turkey Shoot is open to SOFA ID card holders island wide. Register by November 13 at the Taiyo GC Pro Shop for $40. The event fee does not include green or cart fees. This event is sponsored in part by Ashibinaa Okinawa Outlet Mall, Hotel Moon Beach and Manga Souko Naha Branch.
For more information about this tournament, and other upcoming events at Taiyo Golf Club, visit www.okinawa.usmc-mccs.org/golf or call 622-2004/2006 or 098-954-2004/2006
Black Friday Aerobathon

That’s right, there will be three whole hours of group fitness classes from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Camp Foster Gunners Fitness Center Aerobics Room.
Instead of working your way through hordes of Black Friday shoppers in pecan and pumpkin pie induced sugar rushes, you can give your body a physical boost in a positive environment with a range
of workouts that will leave you feeling energized and motivated to get all that holiday shopping finished (perhaps online and away from the crowds). The Black Friday Aerobathon is open to all with base access; children ages 12–17 may attend with a parent of legal guardian.
We encourage and support the participation of individuals of all abilities. Camp Foster Pro-Am Clinic/ Tournament

There’s nothing quite like flipping a bowling ball with an audible ‘pop’ and watching it glide as smooth as butter down a freshly oiled bowling lane and the hearing the crash of another perfect strike on the way to a 300 game.
Not quite there yet? Well, you’re in luck because the Camp Foster Bowling Complex will be hosting the Pro-Am Clinic/Tournament on November 17 to at least keep yourself out of the gutter. The clinic will run from 5 to 7 p.m. and the tournament, which features actual tournament pros, will start at 7 p.m. Registration fee is $20 and includes pizza, drinks as well as a chance to win high performance bowling balls, bowling bags and various bowling accessories. Kinser
Half-Marathon
Half the Distance, Double the Fun
The story goes that around 490 B.C., a Greek foot messenger sprinted from the Battle of Marathon to the distant city of Athens—roughly 25 miles—to share news of Greece’s victory over the Persian Army. With no water stations, running gels or proper arch support in sight, the messenger promptly collapsed and died upon delivering the news. To honor this messenger’s deed, the marathon race was born—with the first official Olympic race being won by Spyridon Louis in 1896 in a time of 2:58:50.
Fast-forward to 2019, when Eliud Kipchoge (who many consider the greatest marathoner of all time) achieved something that many thought was physically impossible—he was the first human to break the 2-hour marathon barrier running 26.2 miles in 1:59:40 on a special course in Vienna, Austria under controlled circumstances. The Kenyan runner held the official world record in competitive marathons from 2018 to 2022, but was recently defeated by fellow Kenyan runner Kelvin Kiptum, who completed the 2023 Chicago Marathon in 2:00:35. Hopes were high to see if Kiptum would become the first to break the 2-hour barrier in a real race, but he was tragically killed in an auto accident in February 2024.
Although breaking the 2-hour barrier (or carrying messages to Athens, for that matter) may not be in the cards, you can still smoke the competition and break your own personal best on Sunday, November 17 starting at 8:05 a.m. at the Kinser Half-Marathon.
This 13.1-mile race, which winds around Camp Kinser, is open to both SOFA and Non-SOFA runners island wide ages 12 and older. Prospective participants must register online for $50 on Eventbrite before November 13 at 11:30 p.m. Check-ins will take place from 6:30 to 7:30 a.m., followed by a mandatory brief at 7:35 a.m. Awards will be given out to 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in each age division. Messages from the Heart:
Deployment Edition
The holidays are considered to be the most wonderful time of the year; school is out, families gather and happy memories are made. But when your spouse is deployed and you’re in the trenches of solo parenting, it doesn’t take much for the holiday blues to creep in.
A little creativity and planning can ensure your holiday season is sprinkled with cheer, warmth and cherished memories despite the separation. These include honoring family traditions as well as starting new traditions, focusing on the meaning of the holidays, spreading the cheer, spending time with friends who are family, making time for self-care, fostering an open environment for kids to share their feelings and documenting everything!
Marine Corps Family Team Building (MCFTB) would like to invite you to take advantage of their initiative “Messages from the Heart: Deployment Edition” designed to
support service members and their families going through a deployment this holiday season. The goal? To foster emotional connections and strengthen family bonds.
MCFTB will be offering access to video recording booths as well as assistance with recording, editing and uploading videos for service members and their families to create personalized video messages their loved ones will cherish while they are away. The services will be offered on December 4 at MCFTB (Bldg. 445) on Camp Foster and on November 20 and December 18 at the Camp Hansen Education Center (Room 108). Registration on Eventbrite is required. There will be holiday giveaways and opportunities to win prizes! Join MCFTB for this special opportunity to connect with your loved ones during deployment. For more information, call 645-3689 / 098-970-3689 or email mcftbokinawa@okinawa.usmc-mccs.org.

You are Invited to the…
…Foster Library Fall Festival
Harvest festivals have been around for centuries, with most having origins dating back to pagan times. This annual celebration occurred around the time of the main harvest of a given region and given the differences in climate and crops around the world, harvest festivals are celebrated with varying times. They usually revolved around elaborate feasts, with foods that were drawn from the crops. Nowadays they are a great way to mark the changing of the season, celebrate harvest, enjoy the cooling temperatures and the changing of the foliage while making fun memories with friends and family.
Living on a subtropical island in the Pacific makes it almost impossible to enjoy the autumn season (unless you book a flight)…but have no fear because MCCS Libraries are here! The Foster Library will be hosting their third annual Fall Festival on Saturday, November 9 from 3 to 6 p.m. Join us for one of the library’s biggest events of the year.
Designed to bring a bit of that “fall” feeling from back home here to Okinawa, the Fall Festival will feature a variety of activities for families and people of all ages. There will be resource vendors (including EFMP, Semper Fit, Environmental, Commissary and more), indoor and outdoor activities, a tractor and fire truck, music, fall-themed refreshments and much more!
For more information on the Fall Festival and other offerings at MCCS Libraries island wide, visit www.okinawa.usmc-mccs.org/library or facebook.com/mccsokinawa. educationandlibraries. If you have any questions, email foster.library@okinawa.usmc-mccs.org or call 645-7178 / 098-970-7178.
Calling All Volunteers!
President’s Volunteer Service Award
Do you have a passion for volunteering?
The President’s Volunteer Service Award (PVSA), a civil award bestowed by the President of the United States, recognizes individuals, families and groups that have offered time and service to their communities. The goal is to encourage more people to volunteer and to recognize the valuable contribution that volunteers make.
To be eligible, recipients must be U.S. citizens or have Lawful Permanent Residency. The award is given to those who have achieved a certain number of service hours within a 12-month period or over the course of their lifetime. There are three categories, Teens (13-15 years old), Young Adults (16-25 years old) and Adults (26 years and older). Families and groups can also qualify, with the hours of service performed by each member contributing to the total. The award has three levels—
Bronze, Silver and Gold—with varying hours per age category. There is also a Lifetime Achievement Award for those who complete 4,000+ hours over a lifetime.
Service must be unpaid and may include a wide range of activities such as mentoring, environmental clean-up, education and social services. It must be performed for organizations that are legally established and serve communities without financial compensation. Applicants must maintain a detailed log of their volunteer hours. Service hours must be certified by an official at the organization and then submitted to an approved certifying organization (DRC/ URC or Volunteer Program Coordinator) to be considered for the award. For more detailed information on how to apply, visit presidentialserviceawards.gov, call 645-3749 or email volunteernow@okinawa.usmcmccs.org.
Tobacco Free Living Month
Commit to Quit—Your Health Deserves It
Are you thinking about quitting smoking but not sure you’re ready to take the plunge? Maybe the Great American Smokeout initiative is right for you! It’s an opportunity to join millions of other smokers in saying “no thanks” to cigarettes for 24 hours.
Held every year on the third Thursday of November, the Great American Smokeout is sponsored by the American Cancer Society. The purpose of the event is to help smokers quit cigarettes for at least one day, in hopes they will quit forever. The rules are simple; on Thursday November 21, you simply don’t smoke for 24 hours. The wonderful thing is that you don’t have to do it alone—you can swap advice, jokes and groans with other “quitters,” nonsmokers and Semper Fit Health Promotion staff who will be cheering you on (along with your lungs).
Need a couple reminders as to why you should quit? Remember that smoking harms nearly every organ in the body, is the leading cause of preventable disease, disability and death in the U.S., and smokers spend an average of $2,000 per year on cigarettes (or about $100,000 in a lifetime not counting medical expenses). Smoking also leaves an odor-causing residue on your clothing and negatively affects your dating life, as 9 out of 10 people say they would prefer not to date someone who smokes.
For more information about the Great American Smokeout or Tobacco Cessation classes, contact MCCS Health Promotion at 645-3910 or send an email to mccshealthpromotions@okinawa.usmcmccs.org .

A Thanksgiving Feast…
Text by: Mike Daley |
Thanksgiving is soon approaching, and wouldn’t it be great if you could fastforward past the hours of back-breaking prep and go straight to the eating part? Well, you can! MCCS cordially invites you to take a break from your kitchen and celebrate this special day at your local MCCS Club or Restaurant, or at home with family and friends.
On Thursday, November 28, Butler Officers’ Club (Plaza Housing) and Tengan Castle (Camp Courtney) will serve a banquet-style feast from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Or opt for a sumptuous repast from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at The Palms Ballroom (Camp Hansen). Save your seat in advance, as reservations are required via Eventbrite for Butler Officers’ Club and Tengan Castle and via phone for The Palms.
Prefer to have your Thanksgiving spread a little later? BeachHead (Camp Schwab) and Surfside (Camp Kinser) have got you covered; their celebration meals run from 4 to 8 p.m. Reservations are also required for these feasts with Surfside accepting reservations via Eventbrite and BeachHead accepting phone reservations.
Thanksgiving Holiday Meals at all of these locations are $21.95 per adult, $10.95 for children ages 5 to 11 and FREE for kids under 5.
Additionally, Thanksgivingafficionados can gorge on luxurious à la carte fare at Taiyo Steakhouse; their brunch is available from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. (reservations recommended) and dinner from 6 to 9 p.m. (reservations required).
To make your reservations or for inquires, find the aforementioned clubs’ contact information at www.okinawa. usmc-mccs.org/clubs.
While it’s always fun to pick out a special outfit to wear out in public, there’s nothing better than enjoying Thanksgiving fare at home in more relaxing clothing (we recommend stretchy pants with some give if you’re planning on stuffing yourself like a turkey).
…Courtesy of MCCS!
As we mentioned, a well-executed holiday feast usually involves a ton of prep time. That’s a lot of effort for one meal— even one as special as Thanksgiving. Why not serve up a little convenience along with your traditional spread this year? Holiday Meals-To-Go makes ordering, picking up and serving a taste of home easy as pie (more on pies, later). This catering option gives you the choice of ordering complete meals or your choice of à la carte selections.
For a crowd-pleasing meal, choose one of two Traditional Holiday Packages— the Classic 20–22 lb. Turkey Package with Holiday Sides or the Deluxe 9 lb. Glazed Hickory Smoked Ham Package with Holiday Sides. Looking for a taste of both? Go for the Holiday Feast Combination Package, which also includes double sides and two pies.
To accompany the whole-roasted turkeys and glazed hickory-smoked hams, MCCS chefs are cooking up plenty of side dishes, including mashed potatoes, gravy, cranberry sauce, candied yams, green beans and herb-seasoned bread stuffing. And, of course, the aforementioned pies for dessert! Choose from apple, pumpkin or pecan to complete your feast.
All of the items mentioned above are also available on the à la carte menu, so feel free to mix and match all of your favorites. These seasonal meals are available from Surfside on Camp Kinser, Ocean Breeze on Camp Foster, Tengan Castle on Camp Courtney and The Palms on Camp Hansen. Ordering is available Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. from November 4 to December 26. Pickup dates stretch from November 23 to December 31, so you’ll have plenty of opportunities to feast! Place your order at least five days in advance of your preferred pickup date and complete your payment at least two days prior to your scheduled pickup date.
For more information, check out the sidebar or visit www.okinawa.usmc-mccs. org/catering. And, from everyone here at MCCS, we wish you a safe and happy holiday season!

Strike Out Stress:
Bowling Workshop for Youths and Teens
The younger generation is facing a number of challenges that are contributing to higher levels of stress and mental health issues. They can be traced to things like growing up in a highly digital world where the media cycle is constant. The social media influence is hard to ignore and the years of distancing during the global pandemic are now showing their effects on kid’s social, emotional and behavioral well-being. Military youth also have the added stress that comes with being a part of the active-duty lifestyle, the constant moves that force them to start over every couple of years, and dealing with their parent(s) hectic work schedules that include times of separation due to TDY’s and deployments.
Marine Corps Family Team Building (MCFTB) is excited to offer a Strike Out Stress Workshop, aimed at enhancing the well-being of military youths and teens. This bi-monthly event will rotate between camps and feature engaging bowling activities alongside practical life skills classes. Participants will learn stress management techniques, conflict resolution skills, how to improve communication, build emotional resilience and foster teamwork. MCFTB hopes to provide a supportive and enjoyable setting for youth and teens to develop essential skills while having fun.
The workshops are open to children ages 12 to 18 (with separate classes for youths and teens); registration via Eventbrite is required. Sessions will take place on Fridays from 1 to 3 p.m. and will rotate between MCCS Bowling Centers on Camps Foster and Courtney. The first session will be on Friday, October 25 at the Foster Bowling Center. For more information on the Strike Out Stress Workshops, call 645-3689 / 098-970-3689 or email mcftbokinawa@okinawa.usmc-mccs.org.
Sign Up Your Kids Today!
Youth Sports Co-Ed Soccer
Children nowadays are being raised in a time of instant gratification and non-stop mental stimulation from smartphones, social media and video games. This makes participating in youth sports more important now than ever before. Team sports provide invaluable life lessons along with healthy outdoor activity, with lasting positive impacts that affect children physically, socially and emotionally. They promote cooperative play, teamwork and sportsmanship, while also providing a space to build friendships, self-esteem and a sense of community, which is much needed for military children who are regularly starting over in new locations.
Soccer in particular has many health benefits including improving cardiovascular health, coordination, flexibility and endurance, building muscle mass and
strengthening bones and reducing stress as a result of endorphin release. While playing soccer kids will learn perseverance, decision-making, problem-solving, communication, teamwork and how to learn from failing.
Registration for Youth Sports Co-Ed Soccer will open from November 1 to 30 for SOFA-status children ages 5–18 island wide, including 4-year-olds turning 5 before the season ends on May 10. Register your child for $70 at any staffed MCCS Fitness Center or at www.okinawa.usmc-mccs.org/ youthsports; deadline is November 30 at 11:30 p.m. If you have any questions or require accommodations, feel free to contact Semper Fit Youth Sports by calling 645-3333/34, emailing youthsports@okinawa.usmc-mccs.org or visiting their office inside Bldg. 5952 on Camp Foster.

Method of Preparation
1. Bring a pot of salted water to a boil. Blanch the shredded cabbage until it is slightly tender (roughly 2 minutes). Plunge cabbage into ice-cold water, drain thoroughly and set aside.
2. In a medium bowl, combine everything except for the vegetable oil, water and gyoza wrappers. Knead the mixture until it is blended thoroughly and has a pasty texture.
3. Lay a gyōza wrapper in front of you and lightly moisten the edges with water. Place a teaspoon of filling in the middle of the wrapper. Fold the sides up to form a semicircle, and then firmly pinch/fold the
Shichi-Go-San
Although many in Japan aren’t ardent practitioners of either Buddhism or Shinto, many still go to shrines and temples during certain special occasions. For most parents, Shichi-Go-San (which translates to “seven-five-three”) is one of these occasions. During Shichi-GoSan, families with boys ages 3 and 5 or girls ages 3 and 7 visit Shinto shrines to celebrate their children’s growth and health.
Shichi-Go-San was originally a children’s “coming of age” rite that was practiced by samurai families during the Muromachi period (1338–1466 AD). During this time, the death rate of babies and infants was exceptionally high in Japan. Because of this, children who lived to the ages of 3, 5 and 7 were cause for thanksgiving and celebration.
Traditionally, all family members—including grandparents, aunts and uncles—would dress formally and visit local shrines to express their gratitude to the gods. Boys turning 5 wore hakama (men’s kimono), and 7-year-old girls wore kimono with an obi belt for the first time. Nowadays during Shichi-Go-San, some girls still wear kimono, but many opt to wear western-style formal dresses. Many boys don western-style suits complete with a small tie—although the

1 egg, lightly beaten
1 tsp. soy sauce

edges to seal completely (usually six equally spaced pinches/folds work best). Continue with the rest of the wrappers until the filling is gone.
4. To cook, heat vegetable oil in a heavy frying pan over medium-high to high heat. Add 12–15 of the gyōza (without overcrowding the pan) and cook for two minutes, or until they’re golden brown and crispy on the bottom.
5. Add 1/2 cup of water to the pan. Cover the pan and steam the gyōza until the water has evaporated (5–7 minutes). Repeat with the remainder and enjoy!

recent popularity of the Demon Slayer manga/anime has helped cause a resurgence in the popularity of hakama. Another modern practice is memorializing the celebration through portrait photography. Because Shichi-Go-San isn’t formally recognized as a national holiday, families visit shrines on weekends around the middle of November.

Congratulations to Kara Smith
Kara Smith (center), Prevention & Education Specialist at Family Advocacy Program was awarded a Certificate of Recognition from the Office of the Secretary of Defense, in August 2024, for her hard work and invaluable contribution to the prevention of Domestic Violence and Child Abuse & Neglect in the military community. One individual from each branch of service is selected for this award.
With only 60 days of being in her job position, Smith went from a member of a threeperson team to a one-person team and would remain so for four months. Throughout these months Smith worked diligently as she was noted for her enthusiasm and motivation that did not wane. Smith went above and beyond as a team of one showing her professional excellence and dedication when assisting Marines and their families. She trained for and launched a new class, completed all monthly IDC training for commands (in Okinawa and South Korea), created a new PSBC-Y Brief and began planning the 2nd
Annual Military Community Music Festival in recognition of Child Abuse Prevention Month. Family Advocacy Program leadership learned Smith has a can-do attitude and will not back down from a challenge, instead she rises to the challenge; anything she sets her mind to, she accomplishes.
Smith was presented with her award on August 13 at the Pentagon by Lolita Allen, Director of Military Community Advocacy. This award reviewed contributions to the prevention of Domestic Violence and Child Abuse & Neglect in the military community from October 2023 to May 2024. The Family Advocacy Program aids with prevention and response to child abuse, child neglect as well as domestic abuse and intimate partner violence among military families. The program works alongside civilian social service agencies, military and civilian providers, law enforcement, legal personnel, chaplains as well as child and youth programs.
Recognizable highlights from Smith’s
work include 23 outreach events with 2,350 participants, 36 briefs with 2,171 participants, 3 paraprofessional trainings with 97 participants, 12 IDC trainings with 66 participants, Century Anger Management classes with 62 students completing the course, AFN Okinawa radio appearances promoting protective factors and various PSAs, a kickball tournament with resource tables in recognition of Domestic Violence Awareness Month totaling 250 participants as well as the Military Community Music Festival with 15 resource tables providing information on protective factors aiding in the reduction of child abuse across the camps and bringing in a crowd of 550.
Outside of work, Smith continues to work in service of the military community on Okinawa, making an impact by serving on the Marine Thrift Shop Board of Directors. Once again, job well done to Kara and the other amazing recipients for all your hard work!
