efore the Ryukyu Kingdom was united, Okinawa Island was divided into three principalities: Hokuzan in the north, Chuzan in the center and Nanzan in the south. The seat of power for Hokuzan was Nakijin Castle. The castle is now in ruins, but remnants of the original foundations and features are still present and can be enjoyed year round by visitors to this UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Nakijin Castle ruins are located strategically on the top of a hill, where it is naturally protected by

valleys, rivers and cliffs. It was one of the largest castle estates on the island, comprised of several wards that stretch up the hill. The grounds include several utaki, sacred groves used for the veneration of ancestors and gods. The ruins are known for being one of the best places to enjoy hanami, the viewing of cherry blossoms, between mid-January and early February each year. It also provides one of the most spectacular views of the East China Sea on Okinawa.

World Cup Noodle

C Mata ashita. See you tomorrow. For details about FREE Japanese language classes, please call Marine & Family Programs–Resources at 645-2104/2106.

ourtney: Are you ready for FIFA World Cup 2014? Japan certainly is. Have you heard about all the Brazilian-themed foods they are releasing here? I’m particularly excited to try the Brazilian coffee cola. Ryan: I don’t like soccer but I love merchandising. And I love that the official World Cup song is sung by Pitbull this year. I may also be partaking in World Cup themed Pokemon. That’s at least two of my favorite things the World Cup has brought—Mr. Worldwide and Pocket Monsters. C: I think I can top that for you.

How about World Cup Noodle? For a limited time, the cup noodle company Nissin will be selling Brazilian versions of their three most popular items: Cup Noodle Brazilian Chicken Noodle, U.F.O. Brazilian Chicken Yakisoba and Chicken Ramen Bowl Brazilian Chicken. I can’t imagine they eat much cup noodle in Brazil, but if they did, I’m sure it tastes just like these products. R: I think I can top that. McDonalds has a special World Cup menu right now, with items representing eight world cup teams. These special

items include the Brazilian BBQ beef burger, German pork schnitzel burger, Spanish omelet muffin and the French chicken cordon bleu burger. It’s not just sandwiches—they will also be offering deep fried Italian risotto balls, Belgian chocolate Mcflurrys, and more. C: You win. Actually, we all win. I think I’ll cheer for the Spanish omelet muffin this World Cup. Thanks for being so festive, Japan. By Ryan Anastoplus and Courtney Rick
