The Hedo Point reversion monument commemorates Okinawa's reversion to Japan.

ome may wonder why many residents of the island prefer calling themselves Uchinânchu, or “Okinawans,” as opposed to being called citizens of Japan. The reasons for this lie in the island’s past. The island of Okinawa belonged to the United States for 27 years after the Battle of Okinawa until it was returned to Japan on May 15, 1972. Before reversion, the currency that was used on Okinawa wasn’t yen, it was the U.S. dollar.

Automobiles drove on the right side of the road (this was switched to the left side in 1978), and people from mainland Japan needed to pack their passport to enter the island. Because of this, most Okinawans were not treated as actual citizens of Japan during this period. Even before the war, Okinawa was only a part of Japan for a short time before the war—until 1879, it was a sovereign nation called “Ryukyu.”

H

ave you climbed Mt. Fuji yet? You know, the tallest peak in Japan? That thing that you’ve been putting off since you arrived on island? If not, it’s climbing season again, and this year is better than any other to finally take on the challenge. MCCS Tours+ is having tours to Mt. Fuji in July and August. The climb may not pose any major difficulties in actual climbing skills, but the terrain can be steep and rocky. The main challenge is, of course, climbing for roughly 5 hours through thinning air. However, the rewards are great and unforgettable. So if you haven’t conquered the massive peak that symbolizes the Land of the Rising Sun, then you’re

missing out on an opportunity to really show what you’re made of. The legendary mountain is something everyone should attempt to

here’s a little known summer classic which involves using chopsticks to catch noodles as they come sliding down from one community bamboo shoot. This unique little gem is known as nagashi somen, or flowing somen noodles. Somen are very thin, white noodles made from wheat flour and they are often enjoyed cold, with or without broth. Sprinkled all around Japan are restaurants, festival events and even neighborhood gatherings that host this interactive meal

experience. Plain somen is placed at the top of a long bamboo half-pipe and is pushed down to hungry, waiting guests by ice-cold running water (hence being a summer favorite). Guests seated on each side of the flume serve themselves, put their noodles in soup, and add toppings. While the nagashi somen trend has yet to introduce itself to American audiences, it’s growing in popularity here at home. Lightweight kitchen appliances, including one targeted specifically for

children, are being marketed to create mock flowing noodle meals at home. The machines are relatively small and mainly intended to keep the noodles from getting warm, so you lose quite a bit of the fun and novelty that comes with experiencing the real deal. Get the full experience—place yourself in this fresh, innovative environment and catch yourself a cool bowl of nagashi somen while you’re out exploring in Japan this summer. By Jadelin Boldenow
