ne of the best ways to experience Okinawa is from the water. Kayaking brings you close to nature and lets you explore areas of the island that would be otherwise inaccessible. It’s also a great way to get your muscles moving and disguise exercise as something fun. Okinawa offers opportunities for both ocean kayaking and river kayaking. Inlets and coves are generally good spots for ocean kayaking where the waters are often calm. The Cape Maeda area in Onna Village is a popular spot for all water sport enthusiasts. Along the coastline, you can paddle to a natural cave known as Blue Cave that is not reachable by land and enjoy spectacular views. Further north, you’ll find ideal conditions for riv-

inside

er kayaking. The lush jungle area of Yanbaru offers mangrove-lined rivers. One of the largest mangrove forests is at the mouth of the Gesashi River in Higashi Village. The area is considered to be one of the most diverse natural environments on island and a great spot to take in the sights from your kayak. If you’re new to kayaking, MCCS Tours+ can get you started with a guided trip through the mangroves in Yanbaru. Or if you’d like to explore on your own, kayak rentals are available at Tsunami SCUBA for day or weekend trips to your favorite destination. Tsunami SCUBA also sells a variety of kayaks and gear to turn one trip into a regular hobby. For details on Tours+ trips or kayak rentals, visit mccsokinawa.com.

ourtney: One of my favorite ways to stay cool in the summer when I was growing up in Florida was to make regular visits to 7-Eleven for Slurpees. Is there an Okinawan alternative? I’m starting to melt over here. Ryan: While there is nothing quite like a 7-Eleven Slurpee (which you can acquire in mainland Japan 7-Elevens), the Japanese icy treat of choice is kakigouri. It’s shaved ice flavored with syrup and condensed milk, usually served in a bowl.

C: A bowl indicates that it’s not as portable as a Slurpee in a convenient cup, but I guess it will suffice. Is this why I’ve seen lots of ice-shaving devices in the local stores lately—to make your own kakigouri at home? R: Yeah, but I’ve never used a home kakigouri machine that was actually any good. Most of the ones you see in stores are hand-cranked ice shavers and they don’t shave the ice nearly as finely. Plus, by the time you’re done, you’re too tired to eat. A good kakigouri’s ice should have a

cloud-like consistency. If you’re going to buy one for the house, get a solid electric one. C: If I don’t want to go to the trouble of making my own (which I don’t), where could I buy already shaved kakigouri? R: In the summer, you can find it anywhere. It’s a staple at festivals, street vendors, and a common summer dessert at restaurants and cafes. You might see it served alongside ice cream or topped with azuki (sweet red beans) or tapioca pearls.
