ith its rich coral reefs, sea life and almost yearlong warm water, Okinawa has a reputation as one of the best dive locales in the world. Whether you’re a master diver or a recreational snorkeler, the waters of Okinawa offer something for everyone. At spots like the Junkyard you can explore a reef that houses octopus, eel, clownfish, angelfish and much more. Up north at Maeda Point you can see schools of fish, tube worms, chromis and, if you’re lucky, a sea turtle. More advanced divers can explore the under-
inside
water mountains and valleys of spots like the Toilet Bowl or Bolo Point. Of course, always be safe as diving conditions can change rapidly, and check the dive site’s current condition before heading out. More dive sites and full directions to each of them can be found at mccsokinawa.com/dive_sites. While you’re underwater, take a few photos for our 8th Annual Underwater Photo Contest. Submit your entries by July 7 to any Tsunami SCUBA Center. Visit mccsokinawa.com/tsunamiscuba for more details.

he northern third of Okinawa Island is called Yanbaru. Predominantly covered in subtropical evergreen broadleaf forest, Yanbaru is a biological haven for a number of animals and plants that are found nowhere else on the planet, such as the Yanbaru Kuina (Okinawa Rail) or the Noguchigera (Okinawa Woodpecker). The forest is crisscrossed by several hiking trails that lead you to beautiful mountain vistas, waterfalls and river valleys. A walk through the forest will transport you into a world of natural beauty, making the concrete and congestion of southern Okinawa seem worlds away. This area of Okinawa is also known for stunning beaches, which don’t experience the overcrowding that the southern beaches suffer in the hot months of the summer. Often, you may find that you are the only person on an entire stretch of pristine beach. Explore northern Okinawa for a break from the city and the chance to feel the peace and serenity of nature.

yan: Hey Courtney, it looks like you have a sheet of mold growing down your pant leg. You’re disgusting. Courtney: No, that’s just dog hair. But I have found some furry fungi in the dark recesses of my closet lately. This never happened to me in the States. Was mold invented on Okinawa? R: That wasn’t furry fungi in your closet—that’s the corner I’ve been using to shave all of your stuffed animals. C: Have you been living in my closet? R: Yes. I placed some dehumidifiers in your closet so your clothes don’t get moldy. The mold was rough on my allergies. C: I already have a dehumidifier. It’s
big, noisy and blows hot air on me. R: Not that kind of dehumidifier. There are disposable ones that are made for closets so your clothes don’t get moldy and your guests can live in a more comfortable environment. C: That’s a great idea. Maybe I can stop throwing my shoes out and people will actually want to come over and watch The Bachelor with me! Do they really work? R: Yes, they do work in preventing mold but it’s still unclear how effective they are in helping people make friends. Maybe if you were the only one in your neighborhood that has them you could invite people to look at your dehumidifiers. Some of them
are little pouches you stick in your dresser. Some of them are little hanger style ones. Most common and in my opinion, the most effective, are the Tupperware looking ones filled with moisture absorbing beads. C: I’ll have to stock up. Where can I find these treasures? R: You can find them almost anywhere, especially during the humid summer months. Supermarkets like Jusco or San A and DIY shops like Makeman and Sakumoto always have them. They are called kulozetto-yo shikke-tori in Japanese. By Ryan Anastoplus and Courtney Rick
