s the temperature heats up, so too does the matsuri calendar. Cities, local municipalities and even small neighborhoods host matsuri around the island. Matsuri, or festivals, are an important cultural tradition on Okinawa. While they are held throughout the year to celebrate various holidays and seasons, there is no better time to experience an Okinawan matsuri than the long days of summer. Matsuri are marked by food stalls, games, traditional entertainment and live music. Large-scale matsuri often conclude with a fireworks display. It’s a great place to sample local food favorites like yakisoba (fried noodles), taiyaki (fish-shaped cakes) or yakitori (skewered chicken).

Festival-goers also have a chance to experience eisa dancing. Eisa is a traditional Okinawan folk dance that includes men and women dressed in traditional costumes singing, chanting and drumming, often accompanied by sanshin (a three-stringed instrument). To many, eisa is the sound of Okinawa. One of the biggest eisa events on Okinawa is the annual 10,000 Eisa Dance Parade on Kokusai Street in Naha. Eisa dancers cover a mile-long stretch of the street for an impressive display. To learn more about Okinawan matsuri, check out the July issue of Okinawa Living Magazine or contact MCCS Tours+ for details on upcoming matsuri tours.

riginally created by dermatologists to treat skin after laser surgery, BB Cream, or Blemish Balm Cream, is now used for broader purposes because of its ability to seemingly eliminate skin imperfections, including sun spots, scarring and skin discoloration. It encourages skin restoration while concealing blemishes, and because it is lightweight it doesn’t clog pores. The dual action nature of BB Cream means that it not only hides imperfections, it heals them as well.

For those who doubt, most stores have a test tube available for each brand of BB Cream ready for you to test. Dab some on your hand and rub it in. You will detect the difference immediately. You will notice that the area covered looks natural and radiant, and your skin does not feel bogged down at all. In fact, one of the properties of BB Cream is that it allows your skin to breath, so moisture doesn’t build up underneath. Companies like Estée Lauder,

Christian Dior and Lancôme sell their own BB Cream anywhere from $50 to over $100. Lucky for you (and your bank account), you live in Asia, the land of BB Cream. In Japan, it sells for ¥800 to ¥1500. You can find BB cream on base in the concession mall or in any of the off-base pharmacies and stores that carry skin care and cosmetic products. Augmenting your daily skin care regime with this all-inone product will save you time and your skin.
