H

ave you climbed Mt. Fuji yet? You know, the tallest peak in Japan? If you haven’t, it’s climbing season again, and this year is better than any other to finally take on the challenge. The roughly 6-hour climb may not pose any major demands for actual climbing skills, but the terrain can be steep and rocky. The main challenge is, of course, climbing for 6 hours straight through thinning air and often-harsh weather. However, the rewards are great and unforgettable, making it all worthwhile.

S

ummer has arrived on Okinawa. With longer daylight hours, warmer weather and no school, it’s the perfect time to introduce your child to golf. The best way to familiarize children to the game is to enroll them into a good golf program that not only teaches, but also inspires confidence on and off the course. Taiyo Golf Club is offering 4-day clinics this summer to educate junior

golfers about the fundamentals of golf. The clinics will provide tips and advice about chipping, putting, finetuning one’s golf swing, actual game instruction and course etiquette. This summer, don’t let your kids (or yourself) vegetate on the couch. Sign them up for one of Taiyo’s clinics. There are two remaining sessions this summer: July 25 to 28 and August 1 to 4. Sessions for kids ages

5 to 9 will be in the mornings from 8 to 10 a.m., and sessions for juniors ages 10 to 18 will be from 1 to 3 p.m. All clinics are $25 per child and open to all skill levels. For more information or to sign up, call Taiyo Golf Club at 6222004/2006 or visit mccsokinawa. com/golf.

Custom Club Fitting

laying with custom-fit clubs can make a big difference in a golfer’s game. At Taiyo Golf Club they perform a 6-point fitting, taking you through an interactive process which gives you results, and the insight to make good decisions. Your custom club fitting by a Taiyo Golf Club expert includes a personal interview to gain insights regarding your practice and playing habits, enabling them to make the best recommendations to improve your game. Next is an in-depth description of custom adjustment options and what impact they have on the playability of the golf club. This is followed by a complete diagnostic of your current clubs including length, lie angle and shaft frequency (flex). After the diagnostic, a static measurement of your physique is made with an explanation of this

baseline fit. Next, a full dynamic club fitting of length, lie angle and shaft flex is performed with detailed performance tracking via a technologically-advanced launch monitor, which tracks club and ball speed, launch angle and spin rate. Once

this is complete, a comprehensive review of fitting results along with a professional recommendation on equipment selection including cross-referencing of specifications for all major brands.

avigating the resources available for our Exceptional Family Member Program (EFMP) can seem overwhelming, especially if you’ve just arrived on island. EFMP is first and foremost a resource centered on you and your family. The staff does everything possible to ensure exceptional families stay together but also have the resources necessary to continue a tour in a safe and healthy way. EFMP tackles this by confirming the availability and accessibility of services for families while also balancing the mission of the Marine Corps. In addition, once a family is living on the island, EFMP works with other military and civilian agencies to provide a comprehensive, multi-agency approach for community support in Okinawa. Okinawa Families United Networking (OFUN) is a quarterly support group that fosters network-

ing and information sharing on island. OFUN is a two track support group: one track is for families and single parents to come together and support each other by sharing experiences and knowledge on different topics and things on island. The second track focuses on children engaging in learning activities in a structured play-based recreational setting. Parents and families will

talk about networks of support, effective communication and best practices in navigating all the resources on island. On July 6, join EFMP on Camp Foster from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. for the OFUN support group. Come meet new families and chat with staff about any questions of concerns you have about EFMP and life on Okinawa.
