Tackling Life’s Challenges
L
T
here are more than 200 castle ruins across Okinawa, five of them are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The castles were originally built on high ground, serving as military outposts or homes to the rich and powerful. Of all the castle ruins in the southern part of the island, Chinen Castle is the best preserved, yet not much is known about it. What is known about Chinen Castle is that it was the home of Lord Chinen and it was where wet rice cultivation was first brought to Okinawa. The rest is still buried among the layers of limestone and rock that make up the structure. The castle is currently being restored, but visi-
inside
tors are still allowed to come and enjoy the view of the towns, ocean and beaches below the ruins. It’s a chance to step back in time to see what Okinawa was like in the time when kings ruled different sections of the island. The castle divides the eastern and western halves of the island and there are two structures: an older one made from natural rock and a newer one made from brick. To find Chinen Castle start driving south on Highway 331—you will eventually start to see signs. From there, make your way up a steep and narrow winding road through a housing area to the castle grounds.

yan: Hey, what’s your blood type? Courtney: Why, are you looking for donors? R: I need to know before I can continue working beside you because your ketsueki-gata (blood type) will tell me more about your personality, temperament and your compatibility with me than sitting next to you all day ever would. I’m a type “O,” and traditionally type O people are way cooler than all the others. C: Oh, I get it...like an astrological signtype thing that some people believe in. But it just so happens I am also type O—the universal donor, and apparently I’m cooler than you think. R: You’re type O? You should’ve told
me sooner. Type O people are said to be creative, confident and popular. They’re also outgoing, agreeable, goaloriented and passionate but sometimes accused of being rude, jealous, arrogant and vain. Whatever. My blood doesn’t know me. You and I should hang out more often and talk about our goals and how popular we are. My goal is to be more popular. C: Wow that sounds pretty accurate. What about the other blood types? R: Type As are said to be perfectionists, artistic and sometimes shy. They tend to bottle up their emotions. Type B people are strong willed, goal-oriented and independent. Type Bs are said to make good chefs and talk show hosts (not sure
where the connection is there). Type ABs are said to appear to have a split personality—compassionate and outgoing but can be shy at times. Like some believe in astrology, others rely on blood types to gauge their compatibility with others, like dating by their blood type and hiring people based on their blood type (though blood type discrimination is considered an archaic practice). You can find entire books on your blood type that’ll tell you more about yourself, including career prospects, romantic fortunes, health prognosis and more. By Ryan Anastoplus and Courtney Rick
