rom cutting his first tracks between deployments during Operation Desert Storm as a U.S. Marine when he recorded his first hit, “Oh Carolina,” Shaggy built his career around feel-good, catchy party anthems and paved the way for many Caribbean artists along the way. With his early chart-toppers “In the Summertime,” “Boombastic,” “It Wasn’t Me,” and “Angel,” Shaggy, with fellow Jamaican acts Sean Paul, Wayne Wonder and Elephant Man, were responsible for bringing dancehall to the mainstream. Since then, he’s had three platinum records, two gold records and one Grammy nomination. One of the most distinctive qualities of Shaggy and the main reason for his longevity—versatility. His records range from dancehall to reggae, and he’s continually appealed to a wide and growing fan base. In

a recent interview in Vibe, Shaggy said, “The thing with the whole Shaggy brand is that it goes through so many different genres of music. I’m dancehall, yes, but it’s a global brand. It’s a world brand. So I will hit with a record that’s slow as a ‘Boombastic,’ then come with something like ‘Angel,’ which is totally different. All the records are always so different.” Whether you are a fan of his newer music, like “I Need Your Love,” “Seasons” and “That Love,” or you were there from the beginning with “It Wasn’t Me,” “Angel,” and “Boombastic,” Shaggy will please every generation of his fans. Shaggy will perform on July 22 on Camp Hansen at 7 p.m. at the Exchange parking lot. Don’t miss what is sure to be a boombastic show! Your Own Private Island

ove the island life but find Okinawa a little too cramped sometimes? Do you need to take it even easier than the main island’s often lazy beaches allow? Don’t worry— there is a place for you. It’s called Kouri Island. Still somehow unscathed by flocks of tourists, Family Marts and abandoned barbeque pits— there’s not much to Kouri Island, and that’s what makes it great. The island is ideal for exploring and discovering new beaches that feel like your own private resort. The waters are pristine for diving and snorkeling as well. One of the great wreck-diving destinations, the USS Emmons, is off the coast of Kouri Island. The island is north of Nago and you can reach it by bridge. To get to Kouri Island, start heading north towards Nago. Take a left onto route 110, toward Yagaji Island. Then take a right on route 247, and

you’ll see the bridge leading to the island (coordinates: 26°41'48.6"N, 128°01'01.9"E) To make things easier, make the journey with MCCS Tours+ on July 22. The day trip will be from

9:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and costs $23 for adults, $16 for children 3 to 11 and is FREE for children under 3. Visit your local Tours+ office or mccsokinawa.com/tours for details.
