M

aeda Point is one of the best snorkeling and diving spots on Okinawa. With loads of vibrant sea life, perfect clarity and plenty to explore, Maeda is your personal aquarium and a favorite spot for many. At the reef ’s edge and to the right, the depth is about 20 feet; to the left of the reef, it’s about 100 feet. During your dive you can see chromis, eels, tube worms, anemone, clownfish, lionfish, schools of squid and an occasional turtle. To get there from Kitamae (Commissary) Gate on Camp Foster, turn right onto Highway 58. Head north for 15 km until you pass Camp Lester and Kadena Gate 1 on the right. Travel past Kadena Circle and

inside

continue going north on Highway 58. When you see a stop light with a sign for Ryukyu Mura Village, turn left. Travel to a “T” intersection (you will pass Ryukyu Mura on the left) and turn left at the light on Kuraha road (also named Highway 6). Go .8 km and turn right at the sign for Cape Maeda. If you want to go to Maeda Flats, just before the parking lot for Maeda Point, turn left. There will be fields on both sides of the road. Park by the tombs and walk down the path to the beach. As always, check the sea conditions before suiting up. Don’t dive if the surf exceeds two feet. Need gear or expert advice? Call your nearest Tsunami SCUBA.

japanese phrase of the week

Pet Warriors

C Arewa nihongo de nanto iimasu ka? What’s that called in Japanese? For details about FREE Japanese language classes, please call Marine & Family Programs–Resources at 645-2104/2106.

ourtney: Hey, you want to go catch some bugs with me this weekend? I hear some of them sell for hundreds of dollars. We need to cash on in this Japanese bug craze. Ryan: Not really, I’m allergic to the outdoors. But as a kid I went out and caught beetles to keep as pets since my parents wouldn’t get me a dog like I wanted. It took almost 30 minutes every morning to get them untangled from my hair until I was told by my friends to keep them in a box. C: Is that why I see so many neighborhood kids out on a mission every

weekend with net and box in tow? They are doing it for the companionship instead of the money? How did beetles become such big business in Japan? R: Actually, one big draw to beetle breeding and domestication is the underground insect fight club. Stag Beetles, Rhinoceros Beetles, Kabutomushi and Goliath Beetles are most popular because of their size. Owners “train” their beetles by feeding them special beetle supplements. Fights are usually done on a log or any designated “ring” area. There is a series online called Japa-

nese Bug Fights (japanesebugfights. com) where you can watch some. C: I heard that the largest of the Stag Beetles, called o-kuwagata in Japan, can cost you a small fortune, ranging from ¥40,000 to ¥150,000. A large okuwgata, however, can fetch several million yen. I don’t think I would want to risk that investment in a bug fight. I’ll just stick with a free one I can catch in the woods. Plus, they are probably better fighters since they grew up on the “street.” By Ryan Anastoplus and Courtney Rick
