Take a trip to Sydney

H

umankind has devised many ways to cool off such as air conditioning and Popsicles, but nothing is as immediately refreshing as a dip in the pool. But there’s more to it than being cool. Here are the top five reasons to visit your local MCCS pool this summer: 1. Heart Health: Swimming is a great cardiovascular workout, keeping your heart strong. Although we are landlubbers by nature, we can adapt quickly to moving around in the water. MCCS Aquatics has a number of swim meets, races and aquathons to keep your cardio up. Just starting? Sign up for a swim class. 2. Building Muscle: Swimming is a full-body workout and will build a significant amount of muscle strength and endurance without adding stress to your joints. Adding some resistance to your legs by using fins is one way to increase the intensity.

inside

3. Cross Training: Mixing some low-impact training with your higher-impact training will balance out your current regimen. Swimming may also relieve your sore muscles, enhance recovery and work smaller muscle groups which will prevent future injury. 4. Flexibility: It may be counterintuitive to summer weather, but spending some time in a heated pool can relax the muscles and increase flexibility while easing muscle soreness. 5. Social Outlet: Joining the Okinawa Dolphins Swim Team, the Masters Swim Team or a triathlon training group is a great way to meet new friends with common interests. Check out mccsokinawa.com/ swimteam for details. Visit mccsokinawa.com/aquatics or find us on Facebook for a full schedule and hours for all the MCCS pools on island.

ydney is a city of contrasts and diversity. It offers the best of the great outdoors, balanced by modern, urban refinement. MCCS Tours+ will take you to Australia from September 24 to 30 to experience all that Sydney has to offer. In addition to exploring the city, this trip offers something special for comic book and pop culture lovers—OZ Comic Con. OZ Comic Con is Australia’s pop culture mega-convention. This year’s OZ Comic Con will be attended by actor Richard Dean Anderson, best known for his portrayal of Colonel Jack O’Neill in Stargate SG-1 and for MacGyver. Fellow Stargate star Amanda Tapping will also be in attendance. While you’re in Australia, you’ll have some time to take in the sights like Blue Mountain, Harbour Bridge or the Featherdale Wildlife Park. The Palms EDM Night

hump...Thump...Thump. That’s the sound of the beats emanating from The Palms on Camp Hansen every last Saturday of the month during EDM Nights. For those who are unaware, EDM stands for Electronic Dance Music—an umbrella genre that includes trance, techno, hardcore, acid house, rave and more. Unlike the 80s and 90s when rave was an underground culture, EDM today has become a more widespread and mainstream movement. EDM has been dubbed the “new rock ‘n’ roll,” erasing the stresses of the day and replacing it with carefree fun. Today’s DJs, who move seas of bodies to the beat, are modern-day rock stars.

The EDM parties at The Palms start at 9 p.m. and don’t end until 3 a.m., or when your body collapses in blissful exhaustion—whichever comes first. These events are open to

E5 and below, their civilian equivalents and authorized guests. For more info on EDM Nights at The Palms, call them at 623-4093 or visit mccsokinawa.com/thepalms.

it Kats were invented by British candy company Rowntree in 1935 and were known as Chocolate Crisp until 1937. The candy supposedly derived its name from a 1920s London literary club. Another theory claims the cherished chocolate took its name from Kit Kat paintings made to fit in small spaces. Japan, however, is credited with the most creative Kit Kat concepts—from the flavors to the packaging. In Japan, presentation counts, even for simple things like food packaging. When it comes to Kit Kats, Japan definitely thinks outside the wrapper. Kit Kats come in the conventional boxed four-piece variety, party packs (filled with about 30 individually wrapped Kit Kats), jars of four big bars and even single sticks. Kit Kats are the bestselling candy bar in Japan, with more than 200 flavors unique to the Land of the Rising Sun. Here, Kit Kats are not only manufactured in chocolate but also apple,

Kit Kats

fruit parfait, peach, melon, brandy and orange, Café Latte, Hokkaidō Milk, lemon cheesecake, mango, kiwi, white maple syrup, red wine, noir (dark, bitter chocolate with nut cream between the wafers and dusted cocoa power on top) and passion fruit. To suit more Japanese (and eccentric) palates, Nestlé also developed flavors such as matcha milk (green tea and milk), azuki (red bean), wasabi, soy sauce, ginger ale and even a gourmet Kit Kat series that included Exotic Tokyo (chocolate and raspberry), Exotic Kansai (passion fruit, gin-

ger, lemon and orange), Exotic Hokkaido (creamy white milk chocolate and blueberry) and Exotic Kyushu (mango, white chocolate, orange and caramel) flavors. The name Kit Kat sounds very similar to the Japanese phrase “Kitto katsu!” meaning “You’ll surely win!” This led to the tradition of the candy representing good luck. The practice of buying Kit Kats before tests and major exams for luck is common among students. If international test score rankings are any indication, they’re on to something.

f you thought the MCCS clubs are a place to go for great breakfast and lunch buffets and always entertaining dinner events, you’re only half right. In addition to great food, the clubs are always putting together events that bring people together through entertainment, music, sports and of course, food. The most extreme thing at The Palms is not the Rodeo Burger any more. On July 24, August 21, September 11 and October 9, The Palms on Camp Hansen will be the

battlegrounds for Friday Monster Trike Nights. Adults of all ranks and services are invited to participate in this thrilling tricycle race, where you will have to navigate through a grueling course which isn’t made any easier by having an extra wheel. Each race is from 8 to 9 p.m. and the fastest cyclists will take home prizes. For more information, call 623-4093 or visit mccsokinawa. com/thepalms.
