F

ar East Bodybuilding “Beasts of the East” show is back on August 6 (check out mccsokinawa.com/ bodybuilding for details). The biggest bodybuilding event of the year attracts competitors from throughout the Pacific to the Camp Foster Theater for a spectacle of muscle and brawn second to none. Many of the bodybuilders you’ll see on stage got their start after witnessing their first show. Though it may seem like an impossible feat, becoming a bodybuilder is entirely possible. Any bodybuilder will tell you, the most important aspect of getting stage-ready is dieting. It is arguably a competition to see who can diet the best. For most of us, trying to lose weight or start a diet is not easy. It’s best to start slowly. Weight loss involves a lifestyle change, and there’s a lot working against you these days. First, our lives revolve around highly accessible, tasty and calorically-dense food. On top of that, many of us live sedentary lifestyles so we rarely burn as many calories as we should. Our bodies have simply not evolved to catch up to this way of life—food science has advanced beyond our homeostatic system

inside

(a system which helps maintain our weight), and it’s simply not equipped to handle a diet of nachos and ice cream. To top it all off, and possibly the worst part of all, is the ineffective and often senseless diet advice we all get: juice cleanses, detoxing, belly fat torching supplements and fad diets. Diets today are short-term solutions that give the satisfaction of fast—usually temporary—weight loss: excluding one food group in favor of another, body wraps or metabolism-boosting foods. But diets require long-term adherence, so the idea of completely excluding certain foods or sticking only to “diet” or “healthy” foods is not very sustainable. The healthiest and most sustainable form of dieting isn’t even a diet at all—it’s being flexible and mindful about your food choices and sources. If you want a cookie, have a cookie—just not all the cookies. Read this week’s Okinawa Spotlight for more sustainable tips on healthy living and visit mccsokinawa.com/ healthpromotion to see what we offer to help you make better choices for your health.

T

he summer has arrived on Okinawa. With longer daylight hours, warmer weather and—best of all—no school, it’s the perfect time of the year to introduce your child to the timeless game of golf. The best way to familiarize children to the game is to enroll them into a good golf program that not only teaches but also inspires confidence on and off the course. This summer, Taiyo Golf Club is offering $25 junior golf clinics for children and teens. All great players start early and practice often. Why not now? Before you know it, your little Rory McIlroy or Ai Miyazato will be breaking 100 and offering you driving tips. (cont. on page 9)

10,000 Eisa Festival

isa can be traced to a dance called the esa omoro. The word “Esa” is found in the the Omorosôshi, (a compilation of more than 1,000 Okinawan songs and poems written during the 15th century). Esa, which was in the poem Iro-iro-noEsa Omoro, was used in Buddhist prayers for the dead. Over time, the poem combined song with dance and transformed into eisa as we know it today. Modern-day eisa is a dynamic, spirited dance that is a symbol of the Ryukyu Islands. The musical instruments used in eisa include the sanshin (a three-stringed lute-like instrument), large barrel drums called ôdaiko, medium-sized drums called shimedaiko and hand drums called pârankû. In many dances, men play the sanshin and beat vigorously on drums while jumping and spinning, as the women dance to the rhythms, incorporating fans,

towels, kerchiefs and other accessories into routines. Eisa is performed by people of all ages at special occasions and tourist attractions. For one of the best examples of eisa today, join MCCS Tours+ at the 10,000 Eisa Festival

on Kokusai Street. The festival is on August 6 from noon to 6 p.m. Tickets for adults are $21, children from 3 to 11 are $14, and children under 3 are FREE. To register, visit mccsokinawa.com/tours or your nearest Tours+ office today.

Okinawa Dive Spots

kinawa has a reputation as one of the best dive locales in the world. Whether you’re a master diver or a recreational snorkeler, the waters of Okinawa offer something for everyone. If you’re not yet certified to dive, getting a PADI certification is easy as ever through Tsunami SCUBA’s many courses. Once you’re certified, it’s time to explore the underwater world of Okinawa. Here are some of the best dive sites to start your journeys: Junkyard: The Junkyard is home to a fertile coral kingdom and diverse marine animal life. It’s not uncommon for divers to come across octopuses, eel, anemone, clownfish, angelfish, parrotfish, sergeant majors and a lot more. Maeda Point: Maeda Point (pictured below) is your own personal aquarium, with loads of chromis, eels, tube worms, anemone, clownfish, lionfish, schools of squid and even the occasional turtle. Before

suiting up at the point, check the conditions at Maeda. Don't dive if the surf exceeds two feet. The stairs from the parking lot lead to about 15 feet above the waterline. At this point, you'll have to climb down the cliff 's limestone rock before reaching the water. Save some energy for the exit and the climb back up. Channel Crevasses: Here, visibility can reach over 150 feet. The

nooks and crannies in the rocks make for a natural dwelling place for crab and lobsters. Sea turtles lay their eggs in a protected area on the beach. Beyond the reef you can see cones, turbans, augers and other shellfish. Beware of strong rip currents during extreme tidal changes. Summer Junior Golf Clinics (cont. from page 1)

The clinics will provide young, aspiring golfers with tips and advice about the game of golf. Topics to be covered this year include chipping, putting, fine-tuning one’s golf swing, game instruction and course etiquette. Selecting a learning program that nurtures their interest and stresses having fun is not only vital to the growth of their game, it can also help instill disci-

pline in other aspects of their lives. Additionally, the sport is a fantastic way for families to spend quality time together while doing something you all enjoy in the beautiful Okinawan outdoors. Summer Junior Golf Clinics are offered for two different age categories: ages 5 to 9 from 8 to 10 a.m. and 10 to 18 from 1 to 3 p.m. Sessions run on August 1 to 4. Clinics

are open to all DoD ID card holders within the age limits. But of course, you can’t let your kids become better than you too soon. That’s why Taiyo Golf Club also offers adult golf lessons for experienced golfers looking to polish their skills a bit or newbies who are learning the game for the first time. Call to book your first session today.
