e muse enough about Okinawa’s beaches and grand scenic spots, but what of its man-made monuments? As much as Okinawa is a haven for the most breezy and carefree to spend freely on beaches, there are some great structures for shopping and commercial indulgence as well—namely Kokusai Dori. The shopping avenue spills over with restaurants, shops and cafes, all of which might take at least a day to explore. Within Kokusai Street, you’ll find Heiwa Dori—one of the last remaining shopping arcades on island. Here you can find a lot of Okinawan goods, from habu sake to tropical shirts. In Makishi Market,

get your fresh fish and meat. Either take them home or have it cooked on the spot for you. In the Tsuboya District, which is known for its pottery, pick up everything from dishes and bowls to shîsâ dogs. There are a number of tours via MCCS Tours+ that go through Kokusai Dori. For details on these tours, visit mccsokinawa.com/tours. However, if you’d like to take the trip on your own, head south on Hwy. 58 and continue straight. Turn left onto Route 29 and take another left onto Route 39. The main street is closed on Sundays for pedestrian traffic. Google map link: http://goo.gl/eFvJA7.

refreshing dip in the swimming pool on a hot day is definitely one of life’s simple pleasures. But a splash in the water isn’t only enjoyable for humans, it’s also a great way for pets to cool down and squeeze in some exercise when temperatures soar. Let the real doggie-paddle experts show you how it’s done at the McTureous 25 meter pool on September 6 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at this year’s Pet Plunge. Bring the whole family, including Fido, for swimming and contests. There will be events like the longest jump and quickest fetch for your furry friend to compete in. Swimming has many of the same benefits for animals as humans. It involves the use of all the muscle groups but without the impact of walking or running. And because water resistance is greater than air resistance, the muscles have to work harder. For details, call 622-7397.

The Fuss About Tape

C Daijyoubu desu. No problem. For details about FREE Japanese language classes, please call Marine & Family Programs–Resources at 645-2104/2106.

ourtney: I’m attempting to reduce my carbon footprint while shopping. I always stash a few “my bags” (the cute way the Japanese refer to reusable shopping bags) in my purse, even though the store clerks still find it necessary to put certain items in separate plastic bags. Why do my tofu and eggs need to be segregated by plastic within my “my bag?” Even when I buy one or two items and tell the clerk to leave them unbagged, they slap a sticker on my purchases. Is this unavoidable in Japan? Ryan: I personally have always appreciated the way Japan organizes my groceries, no matter how much waste it produces. I believe one part is simply

organizational—to me it’s unthinkable to have tofu and eggs together. What if the tofu leaks? Today, most Japanese grocery stores try to encourage “my bags,” thanking customers for bringing one and charging an extra ¥3 for patrons that want “reji-bukuro,” or plastic bags for their groceries. The tape on the other hand, has a more interesting history. C: Do tell. R: When supermarkets first became popular in Japan in the 70s, entire families would come and spend a lot of time shopping together. Children would often want things and could not wait for their parents to finish shopping to have it. The par-

ent would buy the item for their child and go back to shopping. This posed a problem for the stores since they didn’t know what had been paid for and what hadn’t. The simple solution was to apply a piece of tape on the purchased item. At first it was only used for fussy children but now all of us wear this mark. By the way, the separating of some items with smaller plastic bags is considered a courtesy and a part of customer service. If you don’t want them just say “biniirubukuro wa irimasen.” By Ryan Anastoplus and Courtney Rick

Clean Up Our Ocean

each pollution is a worldwide problem. Garbage that we mindlessly toss out entangles, suffocates and poisons aquatic life. An estimated 100 metric tons of plastic—bags, six-pack rings, bottles, fishing nets and more— circulates in the world’s oceans today. Many animals consume plastic by mistake, which blocks digestion and causes death by starvation or infection. Animals tangled in plastic often suffocate when they can’t return to the surface to breath, or starve to death.

You can help alleviate some of these issues by going out to the beach and pick up the garbage that people have left behind. The earth and its creatures will thank you. On August 30 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., the Kinser Teen Center invites you to give back to the community with a fun clean-up project at Ginowan Tropical Beach. For more details, call the Camp Kinser Teen Center at 637-1755
