id you know that Fred Rompelberg of the Netherlands pedaled up to 268.76 km/h while riding in the slipstream of a moving car on Utah’s Bonneville Salt Flats in 1995? On a mountain bike, Austrian Max Stöckl set the world record (on gravel) of 167 km/h going down a 650-meter hill in Chile’s Atacama Desert. While it’s probably not necessary (or safe) to reach these speeds on a bike anywhere on Okinawa, you too can satisfy your need for speed while blowing away the competition at this year’s Camp Kinser Bike Race! Whether you’re a seasoned cyclist, or are just interested in breaking your own personal record (as long as it’s not 268.76 klicks, that is), all cyclists are welcome to take part in this exciting challenge. It all goes down on Sunday, September 23. This event will be split into two respective races—
inside
the 42.5k Road Bike Race and the 17k Mountain Bike Race—both with the same start time. Racers are asked to check in on the day of the event from 6:30 to 7:30 a.m. at the start/finish line, located in front of Bldg. 618 (near the gas station intersection) on Camp Kinser. A mandatory competitors’ brief will be held shortly after at 7:35 a.m. and finally, the races will commence at 8:05 a.m. Awards will be given to first, second and third place winners in both Mountain and Road Bike Divisions for both males and females. If you’re interested in participating, stop by any staffed MCCS Fitness Center before 1 p.m. on September 17 (or at the Kinser Fitness Center until September 19) to register for a fee of $30. Better hurry; there’s only a total of 300 slots! For more information, call 637-1869 or visit mccsokinawa.com/semperfit.

Water absorbs different wavelengths of light to different degrees. The deeper one dives, the less color. Red is the first to go (at about 15 feet), followed by orange and yellow.
Tsunami Scuba Labor Day Sale
S
ummer may have come to a halt, but that only means the best time for diving is right around the corner. Did you know the ocean is actually at its highest visibility during the colder winter months? This makes for some spectacular underwater sightseeing. We’re talking high definition. So go on and gear up for it by checking out Tsunami Scuba’s annual Labor Day Sale! From September 1 through September 3, stop by any of Tsunami Scuba’s five store
locations and receive 10% OFF your next purchase. Warmer weather often results in a greater concentration of organic material moving about underwater, such as algae and plankton blooms that can cloud visibility. In turn, the lack of organics in the ocean during the lower lit, colder winter months often means crystal clear waters— perfect for diving and cool, crisp photo opportunities. All you really need is a solid wetsuit to keep you
warm, coupled perhaps with some good lighting and you’ll be ready to rock. The Tsunami Scuba Labor Day Sale will feature all kinds of gear like this and more! Tsunami Scuba will also be posting daily specials on Facebook throughout the sale. Catch them at facebook.com/mccsokinawa.scuba. Sale excludes educational materials, services, classes, rental gear and booties. For more information, visit mccsokinawa.com/tsunamiscuba.
