he next time you’re at Hedo Point, standing at the monument commemorating the reversion of the island from American to Japanese control in 1972, turn around and you’ll see a curious shape in the mountains. If you tilt your head to the right, the outline of the rock becomes a surprisingly familiar profile of a face jutting from the horizon. Known to hikers as Dai Sekirinzan—this park offers several hiking courses with breathtaking views of Hedo Point with trails that wind through million

year-old limestone formations and sprawling banyan trees believed to contain magical powers. This peak is also considered one of the most sacred spots on the island. To get there, head northbound the expressway to the final stop (Kyoda), then continue north on Hwy 58. Once at Hedo Point, instead of turning left to enter, turn right to the park. There are many signs leading to the park. Google map link: http://goo.gl/WE8axP

eptember is National Yoga Month, a worldwide campaign designed to provide awareness about the benefits of yoga. This campaign also inspires people to practice yoga for a more balanced lifestyle. Yoga is an approach to health that promotes the collaboration of the human’s three components: body, mind and spirit. Yoga is not just a physical workout but rather a practice that is designed to generate greater clarity and harmony in one’s life. While developing strength, endurance and flexibility, one also finds a sense of peace and serenity that is sorely missing in today’s hectic society. To commemorate National Yoga Month and the 13th anniversary of the September 11 attacks, MCCS Health Promotion will host a special yoga-thon on September 12 from 6:30–8:30 p.m. to remember the fallen of 9/11 and those that have lost their lives defending our country. Yoga can be a great outlet for introspection on this historic and life-altering event.

Real Talk with Kathleen McKinney

B

ullying and substance abuse have more in common than you might think. Studies show a close relationship between bullying and substance abuse in youths. Teenagers who bully or are bullied are more likely to use drugs and alcohol. We should learn to recognize the signs and symptoms of a bully, a victim of bullying and substance abuse. Some signs that a child is being bullied are a decline in school performance, sullen demeanor or a reluctance to go to school. On the other hand, your child might be the one doing the bullying. Signs such as excessive aggression, persistent inappropriate behavior or lack of empathy might indicate bullying behavior. Substance

abuse can be observed physically through red, watery eyes and enlarged pupils, unusual smells on the breath or clothes or shaky hands. To learn more, join therapist Kathleen McKinney at the Camp Foster

Education Center on September 12 from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. for a discussion on current trends in substance abuse and bullying. For more information, visit mccsokinawa. com/efmp or call 645-9237.

japanese phrase of the week

C

O genki desu ka? How are you? For details about FREE Japanese language classes, please call Marine & Family Programs–Resources at 645-2104/2106.

Japanese Schools

ourtney: Can you enlighten me on the Japanese school system? I overheard some of our co-workers talking about the new school year starting, so I’m assuming it doesn’t conform to the American school year. Ryan: The Japanese school year starts in April and ends in March. I’ve re-enrolled in junior high. C: Wait, that doesn’t leave sufficient enough break time to work on your tan, buy a bunch of video games or lurk about the mall with your friends while pretending to look for a summer job. How to Japanese kids get by with such little down time? R: School is taken pretty seriously in Japan. Students must pass an entrance exam just to get into high school (going to high school is not mandatory in Japan, but about 90 percent of children do). This usually translates into students having to enroll in cram schools (juku). Juku is

school after school. I remember going to juku when I was younger. I once had a lot of promise. C: What about the school uniforms? In the States, uniforms are usually reserved for private schools, but here it seems like all the kids wear them. R: Uniforms are called seifuku and are based off of Meiji-era military uniforms. Some schools have opted for a more Western look— white shirt, blazer, tie and trousers. Gakuran are black uniforms for middle school and high school boys. The

second button from the top of the is supposed to be given to the girl he loves. This is because it’s the closest to the heart and represents the emotions from all three years of attendance at the school (Japanese junior high and high school lasts three years each). This is a great cheap gift idea. C: Aww, that’s really sweet. Did you ever give your button to a girl? R: No, but I lent her a pencil once and told her she could keep it.
