ne is more human when eating a burger. It’s the closest you get to the call of the wild. It doesn’t take a complex palate to appreciate a burger. A real burger. A Bulldogs Burger. A Bulldogs Burger overtakes you—not the other way around—until you accept that this is a burger with purpose. If you decide to include sides, clear at least half a day in your schedule. Side items include chili cheese fries, cheeseburger salad, cup of chili and more. Every menu item can be made into a set with your choice of sweet potato fries, French fries, onion pedals and a drink. There is something for every class of burger admirer—

inside

from the standard Original Bulldogs Burger, the jawstretching Double Stack, the Mushroom and Swiss for the erudite, or, if you’re not in the mood for a burger, go for the Leatherneck Hot Dog or Chicken Sandwich. All burgers are hand-crafted with 100% beef. Each hearty menu item is bold, fearless, and like all great food, simple. It’s America between two fresh-made toasted buns. Bulldogs Burgers can be found at Surfside on Camp Kinser, Bayview on Camp Courtney and Thirsty’s on MCAS Futenma. Check mccsokinawa.com/clubs for more details.

Who is the Ultimate Athlete?

his is not your ordinary fitness competition. There have been three rounds of competition so far to discover the best functional athletes Okinawa has to offer. Marines have gone through a series of High Intensity Tactical Training (HITT) moves to test overall fitness and combat readiness. HITT is a combat-specific strength and conditioning program that is essential to a Marine’s physical development, combat readiness and resiliency. Different components of training are utilized to acquire superior speed, power, strength endurance and overall combat readiness while reducing the likelihood of injury. LCpl Johnny Denton and SSgt

Trista Kirkland won the semi-final rounds at Camp Foster on July 29 and are heading to 29 Palms in

California to compete for the title of Ultimate Tactical Athlete on September 16.

ood is as much art as it is sustenance—it’s judged on its taste and presentation, with chefs and agriculturalists priding themselves on the artistry and taste of their food. One Japanese farmer, Hiroichi Kurumida, took this a step further in ways that most people might find unnecessary. Mr. Kurumida comes from Kumamato, Japan, where he runs the family watermelon business. In 2006, Hiroichi’s neighbor joked how

it would be neat if a heart-shaped watermelon existed. At first, Hiroichi thought nothing of this, and saw the naturally round watermelon as the only shape that should exist. Eventually, his curiosity led him to research the possibilities of a heartshaped melon. Hiroichi began his quest with a heart-shaped mold designed to shape young watermelons into hearts as they mature. At first Mr. Kurumida was able to create his desired heart-shape,

but when he tasted it, he learned the melon was not ripe. It took three years using different types of melons to achieve his goal of a perfectly delicious, yet heart-shaped watermelon. In the spring, you can find these sweet heart watermelons at supermarkets across Japan, but you may want to wait (and save) for a special occasion: Mr. Kimura’s edible art sells for the price of $250 to $350.
