n Okinawa, the word “ashibinaa” refers to a place where the young and old gather to socialize and play. Almost every neighborhood or village has an ashibinaa. But if your idea of playing involves shopping, head to Ashibinaa Okinawa Outlet Mall for a modern-day take on a playground featuring shopping, entertainment and dining. Ashibinaa is Okinawa’s first ever outlet mall, featuring over 70 brands in one location. As an outlet mall, the stores carry discounted items and sample products that can save shoppers on average between 30 to 80 percent off regular prices. You’ll find stores like Tommy Hilfiger, Gap, OshKosh B’gosh, Tory Burch, Armani, Levi’s, Coach and many more. Stay for lunch or dinner with a food zone on the second floor with six restaurants. To get to Ashibinaa, head south on Hwy. 58 past the airport as the road becomes Hwy. 331. Stay on 331 and follow the signs to the outlet mall. It is open daily from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Shapely Watermelons

nown for its disciplined practices in business dealings and customer service, Japan makes no exception when it comes to food service and agriculture. Food is as much art as it is sustenance—it’s judged on its taste and presentation, with chefs and agriculturalists priding themselves on the artistry and taste of their food. One farmer in particular, Hiroichi Kimura, took this a step further in such a way that most people might label it as unnecessary. Mr. Kimura comes from Kumamato, Japan where he runs the family watermelon business. In 2006, Kimura’s neighbor joked how it would be neat if a heart-shaped watermelon existed. At first, Kimura thought nothing of this and saw the natural round watermelon as the only shape it should exist. Eventually, his curiosity led him to re-

search the possibilities of a heartshaped watermelon. Kimura began his quest with a heart-shaped mold designed to shape young watermelons into hearts as they mature. At first, Kimura was able to create his desired heart-shape, but when he tasted it, he learned the melon was not ripe. It took three years using different types of melons to

achieve his goal of a perfectly delicious, yet heart-shaped watermelon. In the spring, you can find these sweet heart watermelons at supermarkets across Japan, but you may want to wait for a special occasion. Kimura’s edible art sells for the price of $250 to $350. –Amy Schultz
