Ace the Interview

T

he tug-of-war is traditionally a ritual performed in hopes of bringing lively crops. These rituals were once performed year-round all over Okinawa but now they are more inclined to entertain than to bring a rich harvest. Though Okinawa is known for its record-holding tug-of-war in Naha, the Itoman tugof-war is its second-largest and remains one of the most traditional. The rope used in this event measures 180 meters long by 1.5 meters in diameter and is hand-made by the people of Itoman. The match lasts for 30 minutes

inside

and is preceded by a parade of traditional performances involving thousands of people. The Itoman tug-of-war is always held on August 15 in hopes of bringing a bountiful harvest and a good fishing season. In 2013 this event was awarded the Furusato Award from JSPS, a London-based agency promoting social sciences and humanities. he interview is the most vital phase of the hiring process. It is the opportunity to make a positive impression on the employer. Here are some guidelines on how to prepare for the interview. Know the company, position and interviewers. Read the position description so your past experience and skills are in line with the current open position. Professional appearance shows respect. Never make the mistake of being under dressed. First impressions are made within the first three seconds of meeting an individual. Arrive 15 minutes early. Maintain eye contact and give a firm, strong handshake. When answering questions, be clear and brief. After the interview, send a personalized note to the people involved in the interview process to thank them. For more assistance on interviewing, MCCS’s Transition Assistance Management Program/Family Member Employment Assistance Program (TAMP/FMEAP) offers an Interview Skills class to enhance your knowledge and skills. For details, please call 645-3151.

japanese phrase of the week

Cook-your-own-food restaurants

C Where’s the toilet? Toire wa doko desu ka? For details about FREE Japanese language classes, please call Marine & Family Programs–Resources at 645-2104/2106.

ourtney: What’s the deal with cook-your-own-food restaurants in Japan? The reason I go to restaurants is because I’m too lazy to cook. Ryan: I think the social element of yakiniku/shabu-shabu/etc is what makes it popular. It’s like a collaborative meal where all the tedious parts of cooking (everything but the actual cooking part) are taken care of for you, leaving only the good stuff. C: Do the restaurants give you directions on how long to cook the meats? I’m afraid I would give myself

food poisoning. R: No, it’s all on you. But the meat is thinly sliced so it’s pretty difficult to mess up. Cooking meat shabu-shabu style takes a bit more finesse. The term “shabu-shabu” is actually onomatopoeic of the motions one uses in the process. You dip the meat into the broth and drag it back and forth—as if you were painting with a paintbrush— until the meat is cooked, which typically takes 2-4 “shabus.” C: I’ve also been to a Japanese friend’s house once for sukiyaki. She

prepared a hot pot with veggies and sliced meats for the table. My job was to crack an egg into my serving bowl, snag some hot veggies and meat from the broth, dip them into the raw egg and then eat. It was a fun style of eating. R: My favorite style of eating is when it ends with a regret-mousse for dessert. By Ryan Anastoplus and Courtney Rick

It’s All About You

N

o one needs to tell us that juggling our work and personal lives is stressful especially when our loved ones are deployed. It takes its toll on us mentally, physically and emotionally. No matter what your stress level is, and no matter what the causes of your stress are, you have to take control of it before it becomes destructive. Being stressed harms your body cognitively, emotionally, physically and can lead to behavioral problems. Learning how to cope with stress is

one of the best tools you can learn in life. Taking some time for yourself is essential. In the It’s All About Your workshop, learn to manage your stress through yoga, reflexology and aromatherapy. This two hour class from 5:30 to 7:30 on September 24 at MCFTB (bldg. 5677) on Camp Foster will show you hands-on techniques to reduce stress and promote healthy coping skills. For details, call 645-3689. Register online at mccsokinawa.com/mcftb.
