t’s easy to get caught up in the daily routine of missing the snooze button, commuting to work, sitting in traffic, cleaning the house, making dinner and doing it all over again the next day. Although Okinawa can feel large to some, it can make others feel confined with nowhere new to go and nothing new to do. Thankfully, there’s a solution for that: Kouri Island. Kouri Island is off the northwestern coast of Okinawa, 20 kilometers north of Nago. Getting to Kouri Island consists of taking two bridges: one to Yagaji Island, which will connect you to another bridge leading to Kouri Island. The bridge connecting Yagaji and Kouri is 2,020 meters long—the longest toll-free bridge in Japan. The island is small, with a circumference of only 8 kilometers. There are no fancy resorts, just a few quaint restaurants, sugarcane fields, purple sweet potato fields, some friendly locals and a couple of small inns. The slow pace, laid-back atmosphere and bright blue waters make you feel like you are in a tropical paradise.

inside

You can spend the day lounging on the white sand beaches, swimming and snorkeling in the crystal clear waters, visiting the shell museum with over 10,000 shells, touring the Kouri Observational Tower with panoramic views of the island, or exploring the little shops and cafés scattered throughout the isle. The shallow waters and gentle ocean currents make it great for family events, with activities for both children and adults. There are several vendors that rent out snorkel gear, and multiple areas to kayak and dive. Kouri Island is also famous for their sea urchins, a Japanese delicacy, which are harvested in the summer months and available at most of the local restaurants. MCCS Tours+ offers an all-day Kouri Island tour, giving anyone an opportunity to visit beautiful beaches and spend time exploring the island. FAFSA: Fact or Fiction?

ou may have heard that you cannot start college until you have been in the Marine Corps for two years. That is not true. Although you have to wait two years before you can use tuition assistance, there are other funding options, like the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid). There are a number of schools and degree plans to choose from, no matter what your interest. Stop by any MCCS Education Center and sit down with one of our guidance counselors to set up your career and education plan. With FAFSA, students can be awarded up to $5,700 per year in grants. To learn more about your options for college funding and to clear up

any questions and concerns you may have, join us at FAFSA: Fact or Fiction? on September 29 at 5:30 p.m. at the Camp Hansen Education Center. Experts in the field will sift through and separate the facts from

the myths. After the brief, participants can fill out their FAFSA with the assistance of MCCS Education Center staff members. Bring your most recent tax forms in order to be best served.

hey have been called the national fish of Japan, but are now found throughout the world. Koi are a variety of the common carp, cyprinus carpio, and they are the most popular ornamental pond fish. Japan boasts more than 100 varieties of carp. With their metallic sheen of red, orange, gold, black and white, they are referred to as “living jewels” or “swimming flowers.” Carp fossils found in southern China date back 20 million years. Like many other things, these fish were traded throughout Asia and were adopted by the Japanese culture. Records of breeding koi, or nishikigoi—meaning brocaded carp— date back to the 17th century in the rice-growing region of Niigata Prefecture. Farmers cultivated them as food. One day they noticed a red fish among the group of normally black carp and thus began the long history of selective breeding to create multicolored fish.

Living Jewels

Koi can grow quite large, up to a meter long, and thrive in ponds of 500 gallons or more. Larger carp have been found in lakes. In the mid 80’s a 6-½-foot carp was caught in Japan’s Lake Biwa. Like other goldfish varieties, Koi growth will depend on their environments: pond size, oxygen concentration, water temperature, types of food and other variables. They require more strict water quality than the average goldfish and are better suited to the more experienced pond keeper. The hobby of breeding Japanese koi has reached competitive levels. Japan hosts a combined nishikigoi show, selecting champions which

then sell for top dollar on the international market. A serious breeder may find his future champion at a koi auction and it could increase in value up to the tens of thousands of dollars. On Okinawa, visitors will see carp streamers, or koinobori, decorating the towns and rivers during KodomoNo-Hi, or Children’s Day, in May. The carp represents courage, stren gth and perseverance and the koinobori’s origin may be tied to the flags samurai warriors carried to battle. Parents now fly the streamers as a symbol of their wishes that their children grow up strong and brave.
