he further north you go, the landscape turns from grey buildings to greenery and beaches. The air is a little less stuffy, the clouds fuller and the wildlife is a bit more spirited (and easier to spot) the farther north you go. Onna Village sits on the western coast just before Nago, the quiet village survives mainly on an economy of fishing, sugarcane and pineapple. Each of Okinawa’s villages and municipalities have their own unique attributes. When it comes to Onna Village, it’s hard to find better scenery—including a couple of attractions that make Okinawa a truly unique paradise. In addition to seeing the sights, such as Cape Manza and Maeda, visit Ryukyu Mura, a Okinawan theme park, and Onna Glass Studio, where you can create your own Ryukyu glass cups and accessories. Spend the next sunny weekend exploring Onna. MCCS Tours+ offers trips to the northern parts of the island; visit mccsokinawa.com/tours for details.

ou see them in restaurants, malls, outside of grocery stores and most retail centers. They look like glorified gumball machines, only they give you something that lasts longer than a 30-second flavor boost. They are gachapon machines—machines that take your coinage in exchange for a surprise capsule. What’s in the capsule? It could be anything. That’s the fun and mystery behind gachapon. Most machines spit out tiny replica models of popular anime, manga, pop icons and video game characters, but they also offer a wide array of other prizes such as key chains, cell phone charms, miniature inedible food, rubber stamps or even tiny books. The choices are endless. Most, if not all, proper gachapon are released in limited-edition sets. Each set has a finite number of figures to collect. Collectors aim to amass the entire series, which can be a costly

Gachapon

venture. Certain, more highly-prized figures are offered at lower quantities to the less-cherished figures. Many people trade gachapon online, at conventions or with friends. You can even buy or sell them on eBay or toy forums, and some of the companies that produce gachapon are willing to sell single units on request. Some people may view the collec-

tion of gachapon as a waste of money, but they may also be comparing it to the machines found in North America. Although similar, here the toys are high-quality, detailed collector’s items. Gachapon typically run from ¥100 to ¥500, so next time you find yourself with a handful of change, grab the crank and try out a gachapon machine.

The Cornerstone of Peace memorial is located along the cliffs at Peace Memorial Park in Itoman to commemorate the lives that were lost during the Battle of Okinawa. At the center of the memorial is the Flame of Peace, which combines flames lit in three locations: Zamami Village, where American forces first landed on Okinawa, and Hiroshima and Nagasaki, where nuclear bombs brought devastation. The flame has been burning since 1991. The park is located off of Hwy. 331 and open daily to the public.
