Tea with Tours+

ea has been revered in cultures across the world for centuries, making its way into Japan in the 9th century. On Okinawa, tea has a culture of its own. Sanpin cha, or jasmine tea, is in vending machines and convenience stores across the island, but tea lovers in mainland Japan aren’t so lucky—its popularity is unique to Okinawa. The warrior class of the Ryukyu Dynasty enjoyed buku buku cha, a traditional tea topped with frothy bubbles created by whisking mineral-rich Okinawan rice water. Mugi cha, or barley tea, is served most commonly in the summertime, although it is also recommended for people who struggle with sleeplessness; the tea naturally contains melatonin, a hormone that helps regulate sleep. The health benefits of tea depend on the leaves and method of

preparation, as do the traditions surrounding it. There is a Japanese tea ceremony specifically for the preparation, serving and consumption of matcha—powdered green tea. The tea ceremony embodies respect, grace and etiquette through

the meticulous preparation and meditative drinking of tea. If you would like to dive into the culture of tea drinking, MCCS Tours+ offers a Japanese Tea Ceremony Tour. For tour dates and pricing, visit mccsokinawa.com/tours.

If you have any burning questions about Japanese culture, please send them to OLW@okinawa.usmc-mccs.org.

The Far East Bodybuilding Competition has been active since 1995. After a brief hiatus, it returned two years ago.

Beasts of the East Returns

n August 6 at the Camp Foster Theater, Beasts of the East returns. The best bodybuilders, physique and figure competitors in the Pacific will compete for the fitness event of the year. Are you a "beast" as well? Begin your contest preparation now before it's too late. What does it take to compete in Beasts of the East? Being a competitive bodybuilder has more to do with dedication, hard work and willpower than it does genetics or natural talent. Contest preparation is eating pre-portioned meals for months, so that means a long hiatus from going out to lunch with your buddies. It’s doing an hour on the Stairmaster when you are tired and hungry. It’s tough but extremely rewarding to reach the best conditioning of your life. Although bodybuilders may not show their physical strength like powerlifters and strongmen do, it takes im-

mense mental strength to prepare for the bodybuilding stage. Motivated? Start training now to have your moment on the stage. If you need assistance, visit MCCS Health Promotion online at mccsokinawa.com/healthpromotion or
