T

here’s a difference between wearing a costume and being a cosplayer. Anyone can don a Spiderman suit to a party just because it’s a costume party. It’s expected of people to buy the likeness of the latest pop culture figure at the store before Halloween. But cosplay is more than that. It requires dedication to the craft—both to the costume and the character. It is time to show off your hard work and dedication at the Comic Con Cosplay Contest. Cosplayers of all ages are welcome, with a children’s contest at Fun Land and a separate, adults-only contest later in the Fieldhouse. Each person will have two minutes to discuss their costume and a panel of three judges will choose the winners in each of the categories listed below. Contestants will be judged on accuracy of costume, design, creativity, uniqueness and execution. Costumes should be original or be heavily-modified versions of off-the-

rack items. Please keep the costume appropriate for general audiences. Avoid overly gory or sexual costumes that aren’t appropriate for the kidfriendly audience (your costume may be rejected on the basis of being inappropriate or unsafe).

The contest is limited to 50 entries (group entries count as one) so register early. Registration for all Cosplay Contests will be from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. For a full list of rules and guidelines, please visit mccsokinawa.com/comiccon. i OLW

cosplaydo’s&don’ts DO: Be prepared for a long day of being in costume. Make sure you eat, are well-rested, hydrated and stay cool.
DON’T: Show up in full body armor with no sleep and pass out in front of everyone.

DO: Pay attention to detail. The little things are what make a costume great.
DON’T: Complete your Han Solo outfit with Chucks.

DO: Bring an “emergency kit” of some snacks, water and costume repair tools.
DON’T: Carry your costume home in shambles.

DO: Meet people and have fun.
DON’T: Be rude and give your cosplay character a bad name.

omic Con wouldn’t be complete without some friendly and competitive card tournaments. Sign up for these card tournaments between 10 and 11:30 a.m. at the Fieldhouse. You have your choice between a few games, whether you choose the Video Game Showdown (8 players maximum) or one of three trading card games. Whether advanced or beginner, join many other Magic: The Gathering players in this high-energy tournament. The world’s leading trading card game was the first of its kind and continues to thrive. In this game, you will play the role of a planeswalker, a powerful wizard who fights other planeswalkers for glory, knowledge and conquest. The maximum number of entries is 24. If that doesn’t suit you, join others in the Pokémon Trainer Battle tournament. This is a collectible card game based on the Pokémon video game series where you will take on

the role of being a Pokémon trainer, using Pokémon creatures to battle. Reduce your opponent’s heath points to zero to take their prize cards, winning by collecting them all.
Lastly, you can play Yu-Gi-Oh! Duel to Rule, which is a trading card game where players will draw cards from

their individual decks and take turns playing onto “the field”. Each player starts with 8,000 “life points” and loses when their life points reach zero or they have no more cards to draw from. Come join the fun and Duel to Rule! For more information, visit mccsokinawa.com/comiccon. i OLW
