ou love good wine; the taste, the smell, the way a glass of Shiraz can complement your favorite dish. But where can you go on island to taste delicious wines from all over the world? The answer is the Okinapa Wine Festival at the Butler Officers’ Club. MCCS has been hosting Okinawa’s original wine festival since 1997 and it just keeps getting better. This year’s wine-tasting extravaganza will take place on Friday, December 12 from 5 to 11 p.m. and Saturday, December 13 from 1 to 7 p.m. at the Butler Officers’ Club. There will be plenty of wine-pairing hors d’oeuvres including international cheeses, a sushi station and more. You don’t have to be a wine connoisseur or a sommelier to enjoy Okinapa. Spend a few hours swirling, tasting and learning about different

inside

types of wine. Once you find some favorites, you can purchase bottles of the wine, many of which are only available on base at this event. Tickets are $35 and on sale starting Sunday, October 12 at 10 a.m. at The Palms on Camp Hansen, Ocean Breeze on Camp Foster, Tengan Castle on Camp Courtney, Habu Pit on MCAS Futenma, Surfside on Camp Kinser and the Butler Officers’ Club. This is a formal event so leave the flip-flops and shorts at home. It is open to all ranks and services. Attendees must be 20 or older. Okinapa is sponsored in part by American Airlines, JAL and Gallo. For more information, call 645-7530 or visit mccsokinawa.com/clubs.

reast cancer is the second leading type of cancer for women behind skin cancer. Each year, an estimated 200,000 women are diagnosed with breast cancer and over 40,000 succumb to it. Understanding breast cancer and raising awareness is the first step in saving lives. Join the Knock Out Breast Cancer Zumba party on Friday, October 24 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the Camp Foster Community Center and dance your way to a fitter, leaner body while showing your support in the prevention and fight against breast cancer. This will be a 1950s Rosie the Riveter themed event, so come dressed to impress. There will be a prize raffle and refreshments. Zumba mixes aerobic interval training with Latin dance to tone and sculpt the body. It targets the glutes, legs, arms, abdominals and, of course, the heart. Dancing skills aren’t required, just the desire to get a good workout for a great cause. For details, call MCCS Health Promotion at 645-3910 or visit mccsokinawa.com/wellness.

A

ccording to recent studies by the Universities of Michigan and New York, one of the major factors contributing to childhood obesity is the content of school lunches. The fewer calories children consumed at lunch led to healthier children, and oftentimes, school lunches are more calorically dense than home-made lunches. Parents have a lot of control of what their children eat, so teaching healthy eating habits should be a priority. At Lunch Box 101, parents can learn how to prepare healthy, appetizing and fun lunch boxes for their kids. This workshop will be at the Camp Foster Education Center on

October 20 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. A healthier lunch box doesn’t have to be boring either—this workshop will teach parents how to prepare

japanese phrase of the week

Halloween

C Would you like to dance with me? Isshoni odorimasenka? For details about FREE Japanese language classes, please call Marine & Family Programs–Resources at 645-2104/2106.

ourtney: Halloween’s right around the corner and I need to know if I should buy candy for trick-or-treaters even though I live off base. Well, I’m going to buy candy regardless—I’m just wondering if I should plan on eating it all myself or if oddly-dressed children will take it away from me. Ryan: Between Christmas and Valentine’s Day, it’s one of the big three imports of western holidays celebrated here. Japan doesn’t have any of the tradition and folklore of

Halloween like we do in the west. In Japan, Halloween is purely about dressing up and having a good time. C: I see many of the local businesses decorating for Halloween. One ramen shop replaced all of their normal light shades with pumpkin light shades and Blue Seal has a special flavor for the season. I’ve also heard that Mihama Carnival Park does some sort of Halloween costume contest. R: Carnival Park has a Halloween costume contest every year. This year it will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. You

can register online at okinawa-americanvillage.com by October 28 (limited to 150 people). You can also register on the day of the event from 2 to 6 p.m. (limited to 50 people). The contest will be held on the street between 7 Plex and American Depot. Participating businesses will be handing out candy to trick-or-treaters as well; just look for the shops marked with a pumpkin. By Ryan Anastoplus and Courtney Rick
