Daughtry To Rock Okinawa Next Weekend

apan has an artistic history as deep and rich as any in the world, covering an array of media such as pottery, woodblock, silk, paper and ink, traditional Japanese art is renowned for its distinctiveness. A more modern form of Japanese art is also gaining admiration. The medium deviates from tradition and is always unique to the person for whom it is created. Sadly, these works of art are only temporary, always getting chipped away by the hands of time. To many, this only adds to the style’s allure, much like the fleeting beauty of the Japanese cherry blossoms. This artistic style is known most commonly as “nail art.” What began as a day at the salon has morphed into a serious art form complete with exhibitions and competitions.

This impulse to adorn is clearly exhibited in nail art with designs ranging from trendy to downright outrageous. At times the dangerously long and intricate nail designs render hands unusable for all intents and purposes. Fortunately there is a whole other industry dedicated to making gadgets to help nail art aficionados do things like open cans, wear gloves and use their cell phones, all while protecting their masterpieces. On Okinawa, you would be hard-pressed to find a nail salon that doesn’t offer nail art. Toenail art is also popular and often included in the cost of pedicures. The hardest part is finding the resolve to select a design from the endless samples of artistic genius.

good steak is hard to come by. So is a good boss. At Grill Your Own Steak and Bosses’ Night, have your steak just the way you like it and show your boss why you’re the number-one employee. Grilling a perfect steak and being a good boss have some similarities. To grill a steak just right, you must be attentive, but not overbearing. This is how you achieve the best caramelization and crunchiness of the outer layer while keeping the inside tender and juicy. In the same way, the good bosses are attentive but not overbearing so their employees will marinate into their own versions of the perfect steak.
Grill your own Steak and Bosses’ Night is on October 17 from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Camp Courtney Hashmarks SNCO club. Have your option of sirloin or ribeye steak for

ou might have adjusted to smaller spaces on Okinawa. But one place where there is no shortage of space is at off base parks. An average day at the park might consist of a stroll to take in the scenery, a picnic and a ride on a rollerslide. A combination of a roller coaster and slide, this appropriately named attraction has been a staple in Japanese parks for decades. The roller slide comes in all shapes and sizes and consists of thousands of spinning rollers that buzz, call-
ing to bystanders of all ages to give it try. Once riders have experienced the fun offered by the fast-paced jolt of the rollers, the riding frenzy begins: time fades away; one ride turns into five, then 20. Experienced rollersliders know hot summer days can make for hot rollers. Keeping your bottom singe-free during a day of roller slide adventures will take a little preparation. Wearing athletic pants and investing in a roller slide seat—a shovel-like plastic seat with
a handle found at your local 100 Yen Store (or a panel of cardboard box in a pinch)—will protect your bottom from the friction caused by the spinning rollers and gravity. Wondering where you can find one of these roller slides today? A simple Google search will get you started on your Okinawa roller slide adventures. By Amy Schultz

MCCS Presents Mega Karaoke

“jūhachiban” is a singer who relies on one song to show off their talents—perhaps not the most welcomed guest in most karaoke boxes where bad singing is the rule, but this isn’t just karaoke we’re talking about—this is Mega Karaoke. All jūhachibans are welcome to compete for over $1,000 in cash and prizes. You will be singing for the approval of a panel of judges and the audience, so it’s best to select and rehearse your winning song now. Auditions will be on October 16
at Ocean Breeze on Camp Foster and October 18 at Surfside on Camp Kinser. Register by 7 p.m. at each venue (limited to 25 participants). Mega Karaoke is open to all DoD ID card holders 18 and over. For more information, call 645-5821 or visit mccsokinawa.com/entertainment.
