et in the spirit of things this Halloween with Spooky Sites tours, where you can explore local haunts and ghost sightings around Okinawa. Many of the local ghost stories on Okinawa will deliver frightening experiences and some spooky insights about island superstitions and history. This spine-chilling tour will spook and entertain the entire family. Tour guides terrify passengers with tales of pre and post-war ghost stories while you discover local haunted attractions. Whether you are enticed by seeing shadowy figures down hallways, hearing faint whispers in the dark, or

inside

feeling the dread of experiencing haunted houses firsthand, this tour will ignite fear in thrill-seekers and the faint-of-heart alike. We advise bringing flashlights, bravery and a bit of salt (to cleanse yourself of clingy sprits). So prepare for a good scare and join MCCS Tours+ to discover the spookiest sites on the island… if you dare. Adults are $20, children ages 3 to 11 are $13, and children under 3 are FREE. Join us for this tour on October 24, 26, 30, 31 for northern Okinawa and on October 23, 24, 25, 29 for southern Okinawa, from 6–10 p.m. See page 7 for more details.

Halloween in Japan

long with Christmas and Valentine’s Day, Halloween is one of the big three imports of western holidays celebrated in Japan. Japan doesn’t have any of the tradition and folklore of Halloween like we do in the west. Of course, one can argue that Halloween is hardly a holiday steeped heavily in tradition and “meaning” rather than simply a night of fun with friends. In Japan, Halloween is also about dressing up and having a good time. The holiday is not about producing scares and it does not have any religious ties. Costumes and candy is about as deep as it gets. You’ll see many of the local businesses decorating their shops with orange and black, plastic jack-o’lanterns and white paper ghouls. Restaurants might have special menu items, and you can usually find Halloween flavors and themed sundaes at ice cream shops.

Mihama Carnival Park in American Village has a Halloween costume contest every year on Halloween night. This year it will be from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. for the kids and 5:10 to 6 p.m. for the adults. You can register online at okinawa-americanvillage.com by October 28 (limited to 100 peo-

ple). You can also register on the day of the event from noon to 1:30 p.m. (kids) and 2 to 4 p.m. (adults). The contests will be on the street between 7 Plex and American Depot. Participating businesses will be handing out candy to trick-ortreaters as well; just look for shops marked with a pumpkin.
