A Hauntingly Good Time
M
T
he 10th season of the bj-League (now known as Turkish Airlines bj League, or simply, TK bj League) is underway, featuring some new faces on the Ryukyu Kings. The reigning champs see the departure of former MVP Jeff Newton, the retirement of power-forward Yoshiki Yamashiro, one of the team’s original members and the departure of guard Masaya Karimata to the Fukushima Firebonds. The Kings, who were a record-breaking 43-9 last year, welcome forward Hiromasa Omiya and Anthony Kent to fill Newton’s shoes. Among those returning to the squad are Anthony McHenry, Kibwe Trim, Narito Namizato and head coach Tsutomu Isa, who
inside
aims to continue the momentum from last season while rebuilding a team with a fresh roster. So far, they haven’t missed a beat. At 3-1, they are currently tied for second place in the Western Conference. With 24 home games left in the season, there are plenty of chances to catch the best basketball team in Japan. The next home game is November 1 against the Rizing Fukuoka at 7 p.m. at the Okinawa City Gym. Tickets can be purchased at MCCS Tours+. For more information, contact your local Tours+ office (mccsokinawa.com/tours) or visit the Ryukyu Golden Kings official website at okinawa-basketball.jp/English.

Teen Halloween Party
alloween comes in many forms and interpretations, depending on who you are. For some, it is a celebration of everything creepy, from attempts to conjure the dead to watching the Halloween film series. For others it’s about crafting a better costume than last year. For the younger ones, Halloween always means plundering for candy. But Halloween also inspired a whole genre of music as well. Such songs included Michael Jackson’s “Thriller,” Ray Parker Jr.’s “Ghostbusters,” “Nightmare on My Street” from D.J. Jazzy Jeff and the Fresh Prince and, of course, “Monster Mash” by Bobby Pickett and the Crypt Kickers. At the Camp Foster Teen Center,
come dressed in your best costume but be ready for the dance floor as well—the Monster Mash Costume Bash is a Halloween social for teens. From 3 to 9 p.m. on October 31,

Japanese Curry
ourtney: I love curry. Sometimes I eat it so regularly that I begin to smell like curry. I’m not really sure how curry became so popular in Japan—a country that traditionally favors mild tastes. Ryan: Curry was introduced to Japan by the British in the Meiji era. The British would bring Indian food to share with the Imperial Japanese Navy. However, in the beginning, just like any other foreign dish, curry was considered a highly luxurious food, reserved only for the richest of the rich. C: No wonder I enjoy it so much. Although today, you can get curry in
Japan at peasant-like prices. How long did it take for mega-chains like Curry House Coco Ichibanya to pop up? R: Curry started gaining mainstream popularity in the 60s. Cheap curry powders where developed, and more and more eateries started incorporating it into their foods. Curry House CoCo Ichibanya was founded in 1982 and is the top curry chain in Japan. In fact, the highest-earning curry shop in the world is the one on Route 23 near Kadena Gate 5. C: A lot of the Americans living here fall in love with Japanese curry once they try it. Fried cutlets seem to be a popular curry topping choice
in Japan. Are fried cutlets a Japanese thing that got added to the curry? Or was it developed specifically for curry dishes? R: Fried pork cutlets, or tonkatsu, have a history all their own on how they became a staple in Japanese cuisine. It is actually a version of the European dish cotoletta. Both curry and tonkatsu are in the realm of western food brought to Japan during the Meiji era that Japan made their own. By Ryan Anastoplus and Courtney Rick
