kinawa is a runner’s island. The Naha Marathon and the Okinawa Marathon attract 30,000 and 15,000 runners each winter respectively, making them the two largest races on island. Apart from the two big ones, there have been 29 races on Okinawa and its surrounding isles, not including the 15 races currently open for registration on sportsentry.ne.jp, a site where you can register for sporting events across Japan. One of the staple races on Okinawa for the military community is the Camp Kinser Half Marathon,
inside
taking place this year on November 8 at 8:05 a.m. Athletes have been using the Kinser Half as the ideal warm-up race for the Okinawa or Naha marathon. Register by November 2 at any MCCS fitness center for $25. After November 2, registration will only be accepted at the Camp Kinser Fitness Center. This event is open to participants island-wide. Awards will be given to the first, second, and third place finishers in each category. For more information, call 637-1869 or visit mccsokinawa.com/adultsports.

owadays, there is rarely time to sit back and relax with family and friends. We are so accustomed to jam-packed schedules that it can be hard to decide what to do when you finally get some free time. You will probably just play phone games. Well, before phone games we played games with people, on pieces of cardboard. Join us for the old timey tradition of “game night” at an MCCS library near you. The libraries on Camps Courtney, Foster and Kinser are hosting Military Family Game Nights on November 6 from 5 to 7 p.m. at each of the MCCS Libraries. Take a few hours to disconnect from your phones, tablets and social media and reconnect with friends and family in real-time. For more information, call your nearest participating library. Visit mccsokinawa.com/libraries for more information.

Youth Soccer Kicks Off
eam sports teach children healthy habits, discipline, social skills, teamwork and sportsmanship among many other things. It’s also no secret that regular exercise leads to a decreased risk of high blood pressure, obesity, heart disease, diabetes and some types of cancer, so it’s beneficial to instill healthy habits early. Sports are good for the mind and body but of course, its intents are not purely medicinal. The main goal is to have fun, after all. Team sports are a great way to bond with friends and to make some new ones, creating memories that last a lifetime. If you would like your child to reap the benefits of team sports, register at any MCCS fitness center
on Camps Kinser, Foster, Courtney, Hansen, Schwab or MCAS Futenma or online at mccsokinawa.com/youth-
sports. Registration will run through November. For details, please call 645-3533/3534.

Art at Your Fingertips
apan has an artistic history as deep and rich as any, and can be seen across an array of media including pottery, woodblock, silk, paper and ink. A more modern form of Japanese art is gaining admiration in recent years. The medium deviates from tradition and the art always unique to the person it is created for. Sadly, these works of art are only temporary–constantly being eroded by the hands of time. This artistic style is known most commonly as “nail art.” Beginning in the mid-1990s, Japan’s nail-care and nail-art industry had an estimated market size of ¥201.5 billion in 2010–nearly double what it was five prior. What began as a day at the salon has morphed into a serious art-form, complete with exhibitions and competitions. This impulse to adorn the nails is clearly exhibited in nail art with designs ranging from trendy to
downright outrageous. At times the dangerously long and intricate nail designs render your hands unusable for all intents and purposes. Fortunately there is a whole other industry dedicated to creating gadgets to help nail art aficionados do things like open cans, wear gloves and use their cell phones, all while protecting their masterpieces.
On Okinawa, you would be hardpressed to find a nail salon that doesn’t offer nail art. Toenail art is also popular and often included in the cost of pedicures. The hardest part is finding the resolve to select a design from the endless samples of artistic genius.

s Aristotle once said, “Anyone can become angry, that is easy...but to be angry with the right person, to the right degree, at the right time, for the right purpose, and in the right way...this is not easy. It may not be easy to deal with an emotion that demands your attention and response such as anger, but there are a number of proven, effective tools one can use to live a life not controlled by anger. Learn the basics of managing your angry feelings and behaviors at Basic Anger Management workshop on December 3 from 10 a.m. to noon
(register by December 2) at MCFTB (Bldg. 5677) on Camp Foster. One of the main causes of anger management issues are the lack of communication skills. For this, MCFTB also offers an Interpersonal Communication Workshop on November 10 (register by November 9) from 10 a.m. to noon. This workshop, will give you the skills needed to communicate in the most effective way at home and in the workplace. To register for either of these classes, visit mccsokinwa.com/mcftb.
