pend the holidays at the most magical place on Earth: Tokyo Disneyland and DisneySea. This vacation with MCCS Tours+ runs from December 22 to 26. Japan was the first country outside of the U.S. to be deemed magical enough to have its own Disneyland and, as such, it is the world’s third-most visited theme park. DisneySea is no slouch either– it sits right behind its counterpart as the world’s fourth-most visited theme park as well as the most expensive theme park ever built. Disneyland features themed areas such as Westernland, Critter Country, castle-heavy Fantasyland and the futuristic Tomorrowland. As you may
inside
have guessed, DisneySea is a nautical-themed park. Mysterious Island gets its name from Jules Verne stories and Mermaid Lagoon is, of course, home to the Little Mermaid. In addition, you’ll find Aladdin at the Arabian Coast and the “marina of the future” at Port Discovery. So forget cramming all your bags in your dad’s old station wagon for a two-week road trip to get to Disneyland. Let Tours+ take the hassle out of vacationing for you. Book your spot by December 1. Call your nearest Tours+ office today or visit mccsokinawa.com/tours for more information on this trip.

ibrant kimono, carefully painted faces and precise movements—traditional Okinawan dance (Ryûkyû Buyô) is an experience that every person should see while living here. This Okinawan Dance Show will be from 2 to 4 p.m. on November 28 at the Camp Foster Community Center. Enjoy this afternoon of performances, learn about the history of the intricate steps and take pictures afterward with the performers. Ryûkyû Buyô dancers are icons of this island, balancing the hanagasa (a red flower hat) atop their heads and wearing their colorful bingata costumes. Normally you would have to travel off-base and pay to observe these dances traditionally performed for the Ryûkyû royalty. But for one night only this entertaining and educational event is free. Reserve your seat by November 25. Call MFP-R at 6452104 or visit mccsokinawa.com/mfp-r for more information.

Mega Karaoke Finale
hey say there’s no glory without guts. And guts are exactly what the 12 Mega Karaoke finalists have. They have made it through the preliminary rounds and proven themselves worthy to compete in the Mega Karaoke Finale on November 28 at 8 p.m. at the Globe & Anchor inside the Ocean Breeze on Camp Foster. For over four weeks songsters have emerged from their showers to compete to be the top singing champion on Okinawa, have a good time and win some prizes. It’ll all come down to one final showdown. They will compete to take home over $1,000 in cash and prizes. So for some wholesome and exciting entertainment brought to you by
people just like you who belt it out in their cars and showers (hopefully in better pitch), come to cheer on the Mega Karaoke finalists.
The show is open to all DoD ID cardholders island-wide. For more information, please visit www.mccsokinawa.com/entertainment.

Chopsticks 101
hopsticks were invented in China, sometime during the Shang Dynasty (1766–1122 BC). Believe it or not, before this handy tool was introduced the Chinese used forks, but once they saw how practical chopsticks were they never looked back. Chopsticks were brought from China to Japan during the Yayoi Era (300 BC–300 AD). They were a simpler, cruder instrument, made of a single piece of bamboo that was bent in the middle, similar to tongs or tweezers. Sometime in the 8th century, the two-piece bamboo chopsticks we are familiar with were brought from China, and the ornamentation and etiquette of chopsticks proliferated. Chopstick manners are very important in Japanese society. One of the first things many of us learn upon arrival is that one should never stick chopsticks vertically in a bowl, as it relates to a funeral ritual. How-
ever, the rules go far beyond this. There are several chopstick fauxpas that will earn you looks of disdain. Never pass food chopstickto-chopstick—this is also related to a funeral tradition. Never take food from a communal plate with the business end of your sticks— instead, flip them over and use the back ends that don’t touch your
mouth. Don’t puncture your food with your chopsticks or pick at food stuck to the chopsticks with your mouth, and certainly do not ever lick them. You should never use your chopsticks to point at someone or to bring a dish closer. It may all sound like too much to remember, but stick with it and you’ll be eating like a local in no time.

Black Friday Aerobathon
T
mircea_dfa/bigstock.com
hanksgiving is a day to get together with loved ones and take time to give thanks and show appreciation for all the good things in your life. It can also be a perfect time to shamelessly bury yourself in a mountain of turkey, mashed potatoes, stuffing, casseroles and pies. Fortunately, MCCS Health Promotion has a solution to help you enjoy your Thanksgiving feast without fear of Santa dropping off an extra five pounds around your midsection this holiday season and stay healthy along the way. Burn the calories from your second (ok, maybe fourth) helping of pumpkin pie with the Black Friday
Aerobathon at Gunners Fitness Center on Camp Foster on November 27 from 8 a.m. to noon. Take part in four classes–Nightclub Cardio, Body Blast, Cycle and Yoga–to either get back into the fitness groove or maintain your healthy habits. Just because you enjoy some delicious holiday treats doesn’t mean that you should quit exercising. Space is available on a first come, first served basis, so don’t be late. Participants should bring adequate hydration, a towel and be ready to sweat. For details, call 645-3910 or visit mccsokinawa.com/wellness.
