Junior Marine Education Options

I

M

CCS Okinawa has once again gift-wrapped a very special package of holiday cheer in appreciation of our Marines, Sailors and their families on Okinawa as well as on Camp Fuji in mainland Japan and Camp Mujuk in the Republic of Korea. A veritable cornucopia of events, myriad offerings, entertainment, prize drawings, giveaways and more are in store to make the holidays even merrier. And, best of all, many of these offerings are absolutely FREE. The festivities kick off this weekend with a Lock-In and Harvest Fest at both the Youth and Teen Center on Camp Kinser on November 14. On Camps Schwab, Hansen, Courtney, Foster and Kinser on November 17, single Marines and Sailors visiting their Single Marine Program Center can grab

inside

a ticket and be entered to win drawings for prizes twice a week. These events are just the tip of a gargantuan iceberg of cheer. The list was so long that we had to print it on a poster! To top it off, you can enter to win roundtrip tickets from Narita to any UAL gateway city, a mountain bike, overnight stays and free meals at luxurious local resorts, and too much more to list. Entry boxes will be placed at select locations and Your Home for the Holiday Events. For more information about these events, check out our special holiday poster inside the December issue of Okinawa Living Magazine, mcccsokinawa.com or call MCCS Consumer Relations at 645-3434.

f you are a Marine with less than 24 months of service, you are not eligible for tuition assistance. Fortunately that doesn’t have to be a roadblock on your path to a college degree, because there are other options to explore that will help you earn college credit. You can fund your education with up to $5,000 in Federal Financial Aid. With CLEP and DSST testing, you can earn college credit without ever attending the class—just pass a comprehensive test. In addition, the MCCS Education Centers provide SAT and ACT testing. Of course, you want your college degree to be applicable to your career plan. For this, academic and career counseling is always available. You may enroll in the USMAP apprenticeship program to give you a head-start in the field you plan on entering. The enlisted to officer commissioning program is available to those interested. Visit your local MCCS Education Center today to explore these benefits and more. Holiday Budgeting

T

he countdown to Christmas has begun, and with it, the holiday shopping frenzy. Emotions can run high during this time of year and we place an inordinate amount of pressure on making things “perfect” and sparing no expense for the ones we love. This can be the recipe for financial disaster. You can still have a perfect holiday without going into debt. Marine & Family Programs–Resources can show you how with their Money Management Workshop. This hands-on workshop will show attendees how to prepare a financial statement, develop a longterm and holiday budget, establish a savings plan and build or rebuild a good credit record. Please bring

your current leave and earning statement, bank statements, investment statements and statements of debt/ obligation to the workshop. For de-

Homemade Remedies

hile chicken soup is the cureall broth of Western culture, Japan’s equivalent cold remedy is okayu. Okayu is a rice porridge made by boiling rice in either water or dashi (plain broth). Umeboshi (pickled plum), is often added for flavor. A simple remedy is tea— green and black tea contains antioxidants that kill coldcausing strains of bacteria. Another remedy is eating grated daikon (Japanese white radish) mixed with honey. Eggs contain high amounts of vitamin B2 that boost the immune system. Tamagozake is a remedy made by cooking egg in sake until the egg thickens. Honey is added for flavoring. To neutralize its alcoholic effects, the sake is boiled and cooled before adding the egg. Three foods regarded for their me-

dicinal powers are mikan (tangerine), shoga (ginger) and kokuto (unrefined brown sugar). Even the peel of the

mikan is used in one remedy that involves wrapping garlic, mikan peel and umeboshi in aluminum foil and cooking them in a pan over medium heat until the ingredients turn black. One tablespoon of the each day should

cure even the most stubborn colds. One of the most ancient of the Japanese is shoga (ginger). Ginger is used to treat everything from stomach trouble, nausea, poor circulation and stuffy nose. As a sore throat remedy, drink a mixture of grated ginger, hot water and honey. One remedy unique to Okinawa is kokuto, or kurozato (“black sugar”). Kokuto is processed differently from white sugar so nutrients like potassium and even antioxidants are still present. Many Okinawans swear by its health benefits, which include longevity and memory improvement. So the next time you have a fever, whip up a bowl of okayu and some mikan slices. These simple remedies pave the way to swift recovery.
