T

hanksgiving could easily take the award for best holiday. It’s a whole day dedicated to feeling grateful for all of the good things in life… and eating until your pants just don’t fit anymore. This, of course, comes at a price paid in sweating and toiling in the kitchen for hours upon hours. Care for the former without any of the latter? Well, that delicious and seemingly too-good-to-be-true proposition is completely possible with Holiday Meals-to-Go from an MCCS Club & Restaurants. Patrons can order complete packages for a full meal, order only a turkey or ham, or perhaps just a few extra side dishes to add to the rest of a meal. Available packages include the Classic 18-20 lb.

Soccer Coaches and Players Wanted

S

ign your child up for soccer now at any MCCS Fitness Center. Practices for this season starts on January 30 and the season runs from February 11 to May 6. The fee for this season is $60 per child. Go to mccsokinawa.com/youthsports to register. Participating in sports as a child promotes healthy development through cooperative play, teamwork and sportsmanship as well as improving motor skills and boosting self-esteem. And, it’s tons of fun! Of course, every great team needs a great coach. To make a positive impact on children’s lives, sign up to be a coach this season. Coaches help teach a child to be a good sport, talking to them about their experiences and providing positive feedback afterwards. Coaches can register at Fitness Centers on Camps Foster, Kinser, Courtney, Hansen, Schwab and MCAS Futenma or at mccsokinawa.com/youthsports. For more information, call Youth Sports at 645-3533/3534 or e-mail youthsports@okinawa.usmc-mccs.org.

Kiddie Disco Night

ids love to dance. It’s only when we grow older that we lose our sense of groove. Dance ability is inherent in a child because children are fearless. It’s only as adults that we learn to fear outward displays of emotion. Celebrate and nourish this fearlessness in children at EFMP Kiddie Night at the Disco at the Camp Foster Community Center Auditorium on December 9 from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Children between the ages of 5 to 12 are invited to hit the dance floor at this FREE disco event. There will be games and door prizes for everyone. No registration is necessary. Contact EFMP at 6459237 or visit mccsokinawa.com/ efmp for more details.

Home Remedies

eeling ill? While chicken soup is considered the cure-all broth of Western culture, Japan's equivalent cold remedy is okayu. Okayu is a rice porridge made by boiling rice in either water or dashi (plain broth). Umeboshi (pickled plum), is often added for flavor. Another simple remedy is tea—green and black tea contains antioxidants that kill coldcausing strains of bacteria. Eating grated daikon (Japanese white radish) mixed with honey is also popular for soothing sore throats. Three foods also regarded for their medicinal powers are mikan (tangerines), shoga (ginger) and kokutô (unrefined brown sugar). The peel of the mikan is used in one remedy that involves wrapping garlic, mikan peel and umeboshi in aluminum foil, then cooking them in a pan over medium heat until the

ingredients turn black. One tablespoon each day should cure even the most stubborn stomach ailments. One of the most ancient and versatile of the Japanese healing agents is shoga. It is used to treat everything from stomach trouble and nausea to poor circulation and even a stuffy nose. When added to a mixture of grated ginger, hot water and honey it becomes the ultimate sore throat remedy.

One remedy unique to Okinawa is kokutô, or kuro-zato ("black sugar"). Kokutô is processed differently from white sugar so nutrients like potassium and even antioxidants are still present. Many Okinawans swear by its health benefits, which include longevity and memory improvement. So the next time you have a fever, whip up a bowl of okayu and some mikan slices. These simple remedies may pave the way to swift recovery.

If you have any burning questions about Japanese culture, please send them to OLW@okinawa.usmc-mccs.org.

O Pour House

From Camp Foster’s Gate 5, take a right. At the second major intersection, take a left. When you reach the end of the short road, take a right. Continue straight until you see a small intersection with Chocolate Jesus on the left, just before a very short bridge, and take a left. Pour House is on the left. GPS coordinates: 26°18'24.6"N 127°45'36.3"E Tuesday–Monday: 4 p.m.–midnight Saturday–Sunday: 11 .a.m.–midnight Monday: Closed Payment: ¥, $, major credit cards

A REAL Sandwich

ne person said that the pulled pork sandwich at Pour House “tastes like home.” That is almost an insult. How can one not mention the toasted bun, buttery with a slight sweetness to it, muted but striking as a passing glance from an attractive stranger? How can you say the pulled pork sandwich simply “tastes like home,” when its subtle peppery finish does nothing but entice you to take another bite? Pulled pork may remind you of where you came from, but eating this dish and expecting to be whisked away is like returning to your hometown and finding your old house renovated into a mansion by an Arab prince, where only exotic animals and winners from The Amazing Race can live. Not into pulled pork? Then consider the Tri Tip Sandwich. Layered in flavor—from bread to meat, all woven together like the world’s juiciest infinity scarf, enveloping you in deep, woodsy flavor. The beef has

the tenderness of innocence, but the deep smoky flavor of one who has seen too much. The tangy and spicy BBQ sauce has the vibrancy of embers launching off a camp fire. If you head to Pour House on Wednesdays, perhaps your mind will be propelled to more reckless inclinations, since wings are ¥50 each on Wing Wednesday. Wings

come in hot, fire, honey teriyaki and BBQ. Why not grab 20 of each just to decide which is your favorite, then grab an additional 30 of your top three, and so on. At ¥50 per wing, why not? All wings are served with Pour House's signature ranch sauce and a side of celery and carrot sticks to alleviate a guilty conscience.
