Heart-toHeart Dinner & Dr. Seuss’ Birthday
F W
hether it’s your spouse of 10 years, girlfriend of 10 months or someone you’re still trying to woo, Valentine’s Day is your time to shine. Problem is, the Valentine’s Day industry is so overcrowded, we’ve lost sight of what really works. If you want someone to like you, it’s not about how cool you look or how much money you have, it’s all about stimulating the right chemicals. And to do that, chocolate is the perfect drug. These rich, sweet, bite-sized love bombs are the closest thing to a real-life cupid’s arrow we have. Once your Valentine takes a bite of chocolate, their mood is instantly elevated by a release of norepinephrine and dopamine, two chemicals responsible
inside
for the sensation of falling in love. And now, without you even doing anything, chocolate has made someone fall halfway in love with you. Initial attraction is all just chemicals. Introduce chocolate in the mix, and it makes the lethality of cupid’s arrow much simpler, sweeter and easier to mix. After chocolate-ing your way in, the rest is up to you (keeping your partner heavily drugged with chocolate throughout the relationship is not a healthy option). Unfortunately, chocolate is not a complete meal. To finish off a full Valentine’s evening, be sure to stop by an MCCS club for a romantic dinner (reservations required). Visit mccsokinawa.com/clubs for more information.

ebruary and March are marked by two very special Family Fun Night events at the Butler Officers’ Club—Heart-to-Heart Dinner Buffet and Dr. Seuss’ Birthday. Family Fun Nights are great chances for the whole family to enjoy a night out in a kid-friendly environment. Valentine’s Day can be a tough night for parents to get away for a date night. The Heart-to-Heart Dinner solves this problem by making it a night for the whole family. On Thursday, February 12, enjoy a dressy dinner buffet and a night of games, a free photo booth and take home door prizes. March is Read Across America Month and the month of Dr. Seuss’ birthday. On Thursday, March 5 join us for a reading of Dr. Suess books, a meal of green eggs and ham, birthday cake and more. Prices for both events are $7.95 for adults, $3.95 for children (5–11) and FREE for children under 5. For details, visit mccsokinawa.com/boc.

Far East Bodybuilding Competition
I
n 1893, Eugen Sandow, a strongman performer at the Chicago World’s Fair, invented modern bodybuilding. It was called “muscle display performances,” and carnival audiences were more impressed by Sandow’s physique than what he could actually do with the muscles. Sandow represented “The Grecian Ideal,” a “perfect physique” modeled after classical Greek and Roman sculptures, and was the first person to build his body to an aesthetic standard and profit from it. Bodybuilding today has grown beyond a carnival trick, though the end goal of muscular aesthetics remains intact. The MCCS Far East Bodybuilding Competition is back as one
of MCCS Semper Fit’s biggest events of the year. Bodybuilders throughout the Pacific will gather on August 2 on Camp Foster, sure to bring a spectacle
of pecs, delts, abs, quads and more. There’s plenty of time to get ready, so prepare now.

Valentine’s Day
yan: What are you getting me for Valentine’s Day? Courtney: What makes you think I’d get you anything for Valentine’s Day? R: Because it’s customary in Japan for women to buy their male co-workers giri choco, or “obligation chocolate.” So fight it all you want, but you just have to. C: What about my obligation chocolate? Shouldn’t I get a prize for having to work with you every day? This doesn’t seem fair. R: But isn’t that the same deal that men get for western Valentine’s Day? Women in Japan have their day a month later, March 14, on White Day. Men are expected to give gifts that are at least three times the value of the gift the woman gave on Valentine’s day. Giving a gift of equal (or lower) value signifies a break-up. So if you want a good gift on White Day, don’t skimp on Valentine’s Day.
C: Would it be appropriate for a woman to take a date out to a romantic, candle-lit dinner in Japan, as is common for men to do in the States? R: The romantic date night is usually associated with Christmas Eve. Valentine’s is more associated with gifts of chocolate. Frankly, I don’t care what you do for me. C: Well, I’m glad you don’t care since I have no plans of getting you anything. I suppose I should get our boss some chocolate though. It seems like Meiji brand has a monopoly on all things chocolate in Japan. Do they make special Valentine chocolates this time of year?
R: How should I know what Meiji has planned for Valentine’s Day? Besides, that is none of my concern. You should be figuring out what each chocolate brand has planned for the holiday so you can pick out what to give all of your male co-workers. C: Can you at least give me some tips on where I could go shopping? R: Almost anywhere you go now has a chocolate display. From last-minute purchases at the convenience store to more calculated buys at chocolatiers and cake shops, every business capitalizes on the opportunity for ladies to buy me chocolates, obligated or not.
