mensôre “Welcome” to Okinawa Living

A Golden Achievement In Japan, several holidays and observances are specifically designated for children. While some traditional anniversaries, such as Hyaku-nichi-sai—a special ceremonial visit to a local Shinto shrine commemorating baby’s 100th day on earth—are held informally by individual families, some holidays and festivals are actual national holidays. Every year, a holiday called Kodomo-no-Hi, or Children’s Day, is celebrated on May 5 as a part of the series of Japanese holidays called Golden Week. This month, MCCS would like to honor a young member of our own community—someone who also accomplished a “golden” achievement. Ms. Ella Perez (pictured next to Ms. Rachel Losco, CYP Technician at Foster Teen Center) a member of Foster Teen Center, earned the honor of being named the local winner of the 2021–2022 Boys & Girls Clubs of America’s National Youth of the Year program. As the local “Youth of the Year,” Ella will serve as a role model, brand ambassador and thought leader on key teen issues by telling her inspiring personal story at select speaking engagements. Being named Youth of the Year is the highest honor a Boys & Girls Club member can achieve, and the winner exemplifies the values of leadership and service, academic excellence and a healthy lifestyle. They are an embodiment of the positive impact that Boys & Girls Clubs have on the lives of young people. Ella has been a member of the Foster Teen Center for over a year and is very active in club and center events. “I am thankful for this opportunity to represent the teens of Camp Butler and look forward to making a difference in my community,” she stated. We here at MCCS are extremely proud of her and all her accomplishments and are looking forward to the positive impact she will continue to have in the future.

The Courtney Library continues to impress me with their creative programs and overall care of the facility. It may be small, but it is mighty! The community regularly has nothing but positive comments. Often, it can feel isolating in the northern and eastern sides of the island in terms of programming, but the variety and availability of the programs through the library is amazing! There is something for everyone and the staff is always very friendly and helpful. They deserve to know how very much the community appreciates them and all that they do. —via ICE I work at Kadena, yet I drive all the way to Foster Arts and Crafts to get outstanding customer care and superb

The food was thoughtful and pleased both parents and kids; I loved that there were options for fun and healthy fuel and that the dessert offerings weren’t so over the top. It still encouraged my kids to eat real food, which is always so appreciated by us parents. OUT + ABOUT

evered as Fuji-san by the people of Japan, Mt. Fuji is considered one of the most sacred sites in the country and it has been regarded so for centuries. A source of inspiration for artists and poets, this 3,700+ meter tall, dormant stratovolcano is also a source of inspiration for climbers as it stands silent and stoic—beckoning and challenging all who stand in its shadow to reach its summit. Mt. Fuji’s climbing season is during the summertime ( July 1–August 31), when snow can only be found near the top, and the winds and temperatures are more manageable. That being said, it’s no walk in the park— careful planning and consideration are required before making the trek. On average, it takes between four to ten hours to ascend the mountain and anywhere from two to six to descend.

MAY 2022 | OKINAWA LIVING 11

OUT + ABOUT

Climbers have their choice of four trails to the top, and each route has ten stations on the way to the mountain’s pinnacle. Regardless of which trail they choose, the majority of hikers begin their ascent at the fifth station, with buses making the first half of the climb a bit easier. Upon reaching the top of Mt. Fuji, more adventurous climbers can also follow the Ohachi-meguri Trail (when it is safe to do so), which loops around the crater rim. During the months of July and August (pre COVID, of course), more than 200,000 people from Japan and throughout the world make the climb up precipitous trails to the illustrious summit. Most climbers choose to climb Mt. Fuji during the night and wee hours of the morning to witness sunrise at the summit, an amazing experience if the clouds are accommodating. The climb may seem overwhelming, but as climbers pass through the last torii gate and gaze upon the vast expanse of farmland, hills, clouds and sky—a sense of awe and amazement permeates the mind, body and soul.

OUT + ABOUT

Ready to take the challenge? This summer, Tours+ will be offering a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to climb this iconic peak—a feat that comes with serious bragging rights back home and (optionally) a branded walking stick as a keepsake. Due to the strenuous nature of this tour—high altitude as well as extended hiking and climbing—good physical condition is advised. Pregnant women are required to have a doctor’s note to climb, and this tour is not recommended for children under the age of five. Call 6463502 for tour dates and more information. See all of their offerings at mccsokinawa.com/tours. As climbing a mountain takes quite a bit of stamina, some might prefer to admire Mt. Fuji at their leisure from afar, as it lends stunning backdrops to photographs and paintings. Those interested in taking a road trip to soak up the breathtaking scenery can take advantage of Camp Fuji’s Mountain Motors RV rentals. Rates are $125 per day (Monday–Friday), $150 per day (Friday–Sunday) and $399 for 3-day weekend rental. Weekly rates are also available for those who want to catch Mt. Fuji from every angle. For more information, contact Mountain Motors at 224-2858.

our furry friend has traveled thousands of miles to make it to Okinawa, and doggone it, they don’t plan to spend all of their time here cooped up in the house. They want to spend it galloping on the beach with the sand between their pads, wading in the warm waters and snuffling up every particle of new and interesting smells there are. But where’s all the tail-wagging fun at? And what does a dog’s life look like on Okinawa? Those are the real questions, and the main reason this article was written—so you can explore the island with your doggo in tow and get out there and live your best lives (together).

TO THE RESCUES! Everybody knows that canines are social animals and having a friend with them on their adventures doubles their fun. So, before you and your pup go ‘splorin, have you considered adding to your preexisting quirky, yet lovable pack through adoption? Yes, a fur brother or sister is exactly what the vet prescribed. And since there’s no shortage of adorable fur babies that need a home on this island, you don’t have to go far to find canine companionship. One place to start is at Karing Kennels on Kadena Air Base. You can follow their Facebook page (Karing Kennels Adoption Facility) to flood your feed with an overload of fluffy cuteness and keep track of pets available for adoption. When you stop mid-scroll captivated by the perfect pair of puppy eyes, you can email them at karingkennels@ kadenafss.com to set up a meet and greet! Or rescue your newest addition from Okinawa Stray Pet Rescue (OSPR) which is also located on Kadena Air Base. Here’s your heartwarming statistic of the day: they have saved over 1,300 lives since 2016. Find them on Facebook (Okinawa Stray Pet Rescue) or visit their website okinawastraypetrescue.org to see the cuties that they have for adoption and email them at okistraypetrescue@gmail. com to find (another) forever fur baby.

MAY 2022 | OKINAWA LIVING 19

DOG OWNER DUTIES A trip to the groomers (and the vet) may not be the most exciting way to get Fido out of the house, but they are necessary ones. Additionally, they can be a great way for you and your canine to connect—lots of belly rubs, treats and praise when they’re on their best behavior at the vet’s office. There are several places you can take your pup to get them out of the house and tend to their grooming needs. Makeman offers shampoos, cuts and nail trimming services; in addition to these services, the Urasoe main store and Tomigusuku store have selfserve washing stations. So, if your pup is shy around strangers, you can treat them to a scrub à la you. For an ultra-lux pet grooming experience, you can take your four-legged friend to Ocean Pet Club Grooming, located on both Camp Courtney and Kadena Air Base. On Camp Courtney, you can find them near the front entrance of the Exchange, and on Kadena, they are next to the laundromat in Bldg. 427. Your pup will come home smelling fresh and have their summer coat primped and ready to go. “To where?” you might ask (more on that later). Of course an afternoon at the groomers is a great way to spend the day, but another huge part of caring for your dog is taking them to the vet, as they are largely dependent on their human pack-mates to keep them in good health. You may already be familiar with the Kadena Veterinary Clinic, as you must check in with your pooch when you arrive on island and again when you PCS. Besides check in and check out, the clinic offers vaccinations, wellness exams, general appointments, general

surgery and some specialty surgery. If you have any questions, you can email them to okinawavetclinic@ gmail.com. However, if you’d like to find out about their appointment availability, call 966-7593 from a DSN, or 036-868-2263 from a cell phone. Alternatively, you can take your dog off-base to receive care, and one place providing exceptional care is Noah Animal Hospital, which is located not too far from Camp Shields. They offer a comprehensive range of services—to view their offerings or for more information, visit their website noahanimalhospital.com, or schedule an appointment by calling 098-934-4477. Now, without further ado, Okinawa is brimming with pawsome places for you and your pup to hang out at. And here are a few…

MAY 2022 | OKINAWA LIVING 21

PET-FRIENDLY PLACES Of course you could always go for an evening stroll along Sunabe Sea Wall, where the wide boardwalk is plenty accommodating and filled with friendly faces. But it’s best enjoyed when you stop to listen to the waves lap against the concrete jacks and have a seat on the steps to watch the sunset with your best bud. Looking for a place where you can both make friends? Then head on over to the Chibana Dog Park, a large converted soccer field where your dog can run around sniffing rumps and playing with furry companions unhindered! With all that unleashed fun, it’s easy for your pup to forget to drink water, so please don’t forget to bring a water bowl to hydrate, as the heat and humidity are intense and can lead to dehydration and heat exhaustion. Besides staying hydrated, please follow the rules posted on the brown sign outside the fence and bring plenty of bags for cleaning up puppy landmines. After a warm afternoon at the park, it’s time to cool off at the beach, and maybe even go for a dog paddle, perhaps? As of June 2020, Torii Beach (located on Torii Station) is dog-friendly, although there are some rules to follow such as keeping Fido 50 feet away from the eating establishments and out of certain zones. And they must remain leashed unless participating in water activities like paddle boarding or boating (this does not include wading in the water). However, for some leash-free fun, you can take them to the Torii Dog Park located just outside the beach area. (Find a comprehensive list of the rules at torii.armymwr.com/programs/torii-beach.)

A long day of sand, sun, water sporting and park frolicking calls for a satisfying meal, which means it’s time to take your bestie for a bite at Halelea— a dog-friendly diner in Onna Village that serves steak, hamburgers and hotdogs. Rest on the terrace together enjoying the comforts of casual cuisine with some Okinawan flair. If your pup can’t stand the thought of being tethered to the terrace, they can prance around in Halela’s lush, charming dog run (for small dogs only). For something a little more adventurous, try trekking a dog-friendly UNESCO World Heritage Site—Katsuren Castle Ruins. The castle is at the summit of a hill in eastern Uruma on the Katsuren Peninsula and juts out over the Pacific Ocean, the steep climb to the top is rewarded with a breathtaking, panoramic view for you and your canine companion to enjoy. Please be sure to clean up after them and keep them leashed the entire time.

Leave the mundanity of life at the foot of the bridge in Motobu, then let loose on Sesoko Island and forge a better bond with your four-legged family member by going on a little staycation. I know what you’re thinking; planning and securing pet-friendly accommodations is going to be a pain. But that’s where you’re wrong, as Hilton Okinawa Sesoko Resort makes it a breeze. They offer spacious pet-friendly rooms on the first floor of the resort. And their attention to detail will blow you away, such as providing a wire cage, dog bed, food and water bowl and pee pads as well as equipping the rooms with air purifiers (because nothing puts a damper on a vacation like the smell of wet dog). You can opt to pamper your pal with an exquisite doggie dining experience, and employ a dog’s mindset and enjoy the simple pleasures like taking a stroll through the resort gardens, scouting out local cafés and romping on the beach. For more information (like pet size restrictions and required documentation) and to book a room, please visit bit.ly/sesoko_pet. As John Grogan, author of Marley & Me, pointed out, “Such short little lives our pets have to spend with us, and they spend most of it waiting for us to come home each day…” Don’t let your loyal companion spend days at a time indoors waiting for your return, make their time here on Okinawa and their existence a memorable one. Doing so is well worth it since their repayment comes in the best forms—lots of laughs, unwavering companionship and unconditional love. 

Coach Recruitment MCCS Youth Sports With the youth baseball and softball seasons right around the corner, MCCS Semper Fit Youth Sports is looking for volunteer head and assistant coaches to lead teams and mentor children ages 5 to 18. Volunteer coaching is a great way to engage with the community, be a positive role model for children and teenagers, share your experience and knowledge of a sport and even get some exercise, as demonstrating how to steal second base and field fly balls for an hour or two can certainly get the blood pumping. If you’re interested and think you’d be a responsible, positive addition to the MCCS Youth Sports community, download the application at mccsokinawa.com/ coachescorner. Next, print the application, fill it out and drop it off at the Semper Fit Youth Sports office on Camp Foster to register. Applications for volunteers 18+ (16+ for assistant coaches) are being accepted now until all vacancies have been filled. The baseball and softball seasons officially begin on July 18 and wrap up October 8. If, by chance, you don’t have much background in baseball or softball but you’d like to be a coach for another sport, keep an eye out for more coaching opportunities in the future. For information on how to become a volunteer, or if you have any questions, please contact youthsports@okinawa.usmc-mccs.org. Alternatively, you can call 645-3533/34 from a DSN or 098-970-3533/34 if using a cell phone. For more general information, head to mccsokinawa.com/youthsports. 

Enjoy the Rays of Summer Tsunami Scuba Memorial Day Sale Did you know the first manta ray ever born in captivity was at Okinawa’s Churaumi Aquarium? These magnificent creatures can be seen in the Kuroshio tank, but imagine being lucky enough to encounter one in the wild! Summer months on Okinawa are perfect for scuba divers to see many remarkable creatures that inhabit the islands’ tropical waters. The main island of Okinawa features many dive points, each more amazing than the last. You can hover above gardens of soft corals off Sunabe Seawall, gaze into the depths of the deepest azure off Maeda Point (and try to see the bottom 30+ meters below), or marvel at expanses of branch and table corals offshore from Onna Village. At most venues you can spy sea life in multitudes—eagle rays, clownfish and anemones, turtles, reef sharks and fish in every shape and color you can imagine and then some. Breathtaking glimpses of marine life thrill divers of all experience levels, so don’t miss your chance this summer. To ensure that you’re ready for the season, Tsunami Scuba will be holding their annual Memorial Day Expo and Sale, offering 15%

Mother’s Day Storytime Cozy up with a Good Book Your mom is your rock, your foundation, your strength and your greatest champion. She stayed up nights with you when you were sick, helped you with homework and put a bandage on your “owies.” She brought you into this world, and she may have mentioned—on occasion—she can also take you out of it. In honor of mom, we celebrate her beauty, grace and sacrifice each year in May as a special token of gratitude for all that she does for us. On May 8, beginning at 10:30 a.m., MCCS Libraries on Camps Courtney, Foster, Hansen and Kinser will celebrate moms, aunties, grandmas and caregivers in the warm company of new friends and exciting stories! Mother’s Day Storytime will feature light breakfast foods, refreshments, sing-alongs and wonderful tales. Kids will also get a chance to

express their creativity through fun arts and crafts projects they’re sure to love. Mother’s Day Storytime is open to children of all ages. Living in a country with such a rich, ancient culture is a unique and special opportunity, and immersing yourself in this culture can make the experience that much more pleasant. But with so much to learn, where do you start? How about at one of Kinser Library’s Japanese Culture Programs? Did you know that many in Japan send out shochu-mimai, or “mid-summer greetings” postcards? They’re intended to show sympathy over the harsh, unbearable summer heat and gently remind recipients to take care of themselves, as the humid summer months are physically exhausting and can cause ailments such as heatstroke. The timeline for sending out these cards is from the middle of July until Risshu, the first day of autumn (typically August 7). Have you heard of this custom? Maybe you haven’t, but surely you’ve spotted some of Okinawa’s guardians—shīsā dogs. Variations of the guardian lions from China and mainland’s komainu, these talismans were imported from China to the Ryukyu Islands and serve as protectors from evil spirits. On May 14 at 3 p.m. you can stop by the Kinser Library to learn how to create and send your own well-wishes to friends and family this summer. Additionally, keep your home free from malicious spirits by painting your own pair of protectors on May 28 at 3 p.m. For more information, visit mccsokinawa.com/libraries or send an email to kinserlibrary@okinawa.usmc-mccs.org. You can also call 645-7178 from a DSN or 098-970-7178 from off base for any further questions. 

Find Help… At SACC When substance abuse gets out of control, the effects can be devastating, for both the individual and their family members. The Substance Abuse Counseling Center (SACC) is here to help by providing services such as outreach and education for military commands, prevention, screening, early intervention, outpatient services, family education programs and more. Outreach and education services provide programs tailored to meet the needs of individual commands by the Drug Demand Reduction Coordinator (DDRC) and Substance Abuse Prevention Specialist. SACC offers two different prevention classes— Prime for Life (PFL) 4.5, intended for at-risk Marines and Sailors; and Prime for Life (PFL) 16, geared towards individuals who have experienced an isolated alcohol-related incident or are already making high-risk alcohol and drug choices. SACC’s outpatient services are six-week counseling programs that aid clients diagnosed with moderate substance-use disorder or gambling addiction. They are carried out through continuing care groups and/or one-on-one sessions where individuals receive the support and encouragement they need to continue and maintain recovery lifestyle changes. SACC also offers sessions to friends and family of service members with addiction, where they provide information about addiction, ways to support recovery efforts and healthy coping skills. If you or someone you know is struggling with substance abuse, you can reach SACC by calling 645-3009 from on base, or 098-9703009 from off base or send an email to mccsbhsaccprevention@okinawa. usmc-mccs.org. Stress is Inevitable Being Stressed is Not We live in an incredibly taxing time, with stress so pervasive that listing a few of life’s current stressors would be unnecessary and redundant. We’re all on the same stress page. Yet, there are people around us who appear happy—or at least stable against the onslaught of negative news stories. How is this so? What tricks do they have up their sleeves? The likely difference is that these people are good at managing stress. Let’s be clear—stress management is a learnable skill; it’s not hereditary or something coded into our DNA. So if you find yourself overwhelmed by stress, reacting to the world around you instead of responding, find comfort in the fact that you can change this—you can take control—by learning how to manage stress. How? With the help of MCCS. Behavioral Health’s Family Advocacy Program offers Stress Management classes to units upon request, in which you’ll learn about identifying stress; the differences between toxic, tolerable and positive stress; and techniques to deal with stress properly. You’ll walk out with an actionable game plan with which to manage stress so that stress no longer manages you. Stress is an inevitable part of life. Being stressed, however, is not. If you would like to request a class for your unit or if you have any questions, please call 645-2915, 098-9702915 or email FAPprevention@okinawa.usmc-mccs.org. Kitchen Warriors Cooking Competition

TOP RIGHT PHOTO BY KIRSTIN SPANU

Have you watched those cooking shows, you know the ones where a large group of amateur chefs and home cooks compete in a series of grueling cooking challenges striving for the title of culinary master? Certainly, at some point, (mid-binge) you turned to your spouse and said, “It would be so cool to see people compete, for real.” Well, we hear you, and MCCS proudly presents our first ever Kitchen Warriors! A cooking battle royale where 16 teams of two people (home cooks and foodies) will compete for the coveted title of Kitchen Warrior. Marvel at the three-round competition, where competitors will receive mystery boxes that contain ingredients that they will use to create elegant dishes that are in line with each round’s theme in an allotted 60 minutes, each round ending with eliminations. Competitors better bring the heat, as trophies will be awarded to the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place teams. Additionally, the first place and runner-up teams will receive customized Kitchen Warriors chef jackets as well as handcrafted cutlery from RisingEEL Knives (as featured in our January issue). Best of all, spectators will have access to a continental breakfast, dynamic food stations for lunch, snacks and beverages throughout the duration of the event. Interested in attending this spectacle happening on May 28 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.? Registration is open now and you can sign up by visiting mccsokinawa.com/kitchenwarriors, but be quick as registration is limited. 

Celebrate Cinco de Mayo …at TERRA! On May 5, 1862, over 6,000 French infantrymen sent by Emperor Napoleon III suffered a shocking defeat at the hands of a force less than half its size made up of Mexican troops and Native Americans. This victory at the Battle of Puebla on 5th of May, or Cinco de Mayo, became a symbol of Mexican pride that is now celebrated throughout the world with song, dance and—most importantly—delicious Mexican cuisine. TERRA, located on Camp Foster will be celebrating Cinco de Mayo in style with their NEW Burnt Ends Brisket Tacos—two flame-grilled corn tortillas stuffed with slowsmoked beef and topped with shredded lettuce and pico de gallo. The tacos are garnished with avocado crema, cilantro and lime and are served with a side of cilantro rice and borracho beans. Arriba! TERRA’s special Burnt Ends Brisket Tacos are available for $12 starting in May. For more information on this offering, call 645-1249 (098-970-1249 from off base). RESTAURANT REVIEW

An Unforgettable Dining Experience SeMare at Hilton Okinawa Sesoko Resort Text by Kirstin Spanu | Photography by Mia Cox

Location Hilton Okinawa Sesoko Resort 5750 Sesoko Motobu-Cho Kunigami-Gun, Okinawa Hours of Operation Open Daily, 5–9 p.m. (Last Order 8 p.m.) For the latest opening hours, please visit https://bit.ly/se_hours Contact 0980-47-6300 hiltonsesoko.com Payment ¥ | CC *Restaurants offer a 15% military discount with a valid military ID (excludes in-room dining and Grab & Go shop). **Both course menus and à la carte options are available.

While driving over the tall, arching bridge to Sesoko Island, I felt like I was leaving my normal, everyday life behind and crossing into a magical place. This feeling reached a crescendo when I entered the grounds of Hilton Okinawa Sesoko Resort and drank in the incredible view of the azure sea, crystal-clear pool and beautiful palm trees accentuating the lawn. Upon entering the hotel’s Italian restaurant, SeMare (Se, from Sesoko and Mare, the Italian word for sea) I was immediately enraptured by the view of East China Sea and neighboring Ie and Minna Islands. It was official—I had escaped reality. Unbeknownst to me, SeMare’s ambiance foreshadowed the meal I was about to enjoy. From the imposing, burnt orange mosaic pizza oven and displays of classic Italian ingredients to the intricate orange-swirled Ryukyu glass, everything exquisitely balanced Italian style and Okinawa’s culture and flair. The six-course meal began with two appetizers—the first being Marmitako, a Spanish Basque stew made with Okinawan tuna accompanied by traditional Sardinian thin bread. The restaurant manager and resident sommelier, Yasuyuki Matsushita, explained this course and each of the following courses as they appeared at our table. Marmitako translates to “fisherman’s stew,” explained Mr. Matsushita. “It’s a common food in the Basque region and every house has their own unique flavor,” he said while graciously inviting me to try SeMare’s take on the dish. The tender, briny addition of the freshly caught tuna beautifully complimented the variety of textures from the sweet tomato stew base, potatoes and bread. And an exquisitely piquant olive oil—universally known as a sign of good quality—sent this dish soaring over the edge. The next course was a take on a classic carpaccio— fresh arugula, diced tomatoes and delicate edible blossoms resting atop a bed of thinly sliced Motobu beef

garnished with truffles and Parmesan cheese. I have to admit, I was a little apprehensive to try this appetizer as it contains a rather powerful (and sometimes, overpowering) ingredient—namely truffles. However, I am elated to say the oaky quality it brought was a welcome addition, rounding out the entire dish. But what really tied this dish together, for me at least, was the nutty flavor of edamame (soybeans) and crispy mushrooms. Throughout the meal, each course felt more impressive than the last. Some courses came wrapped in steaming pockets of goodness, others with sweet bubbly foam, and one course juxtaposed black and white ingredients with an outburst of flavor incomparable to anything I have ever eaten. My favorite dish, the Controfiletto di Manzo, is also Chef Takafumi Matsumoto’s favorite dish to prepare. The ingredients composing the dish are wholly local when available. A generous cut of Motobu beef sirloin was artfully arranged atop a purple sweet potato puree, surrounded by snap peas, cauliflower, cherry tomatoes and other local seasonal vegetables. According to Mr. Matsushita, the red miso crumbles represent soil, an integral part of the local farming community from whence the ingredients came. “When creating this dish, I was thinking about color balance, balance between the ingredients and creating a garden on the plate,” says Chef Matsumoto. Chef Matsumoto also stressed the importance of not only preparing a delicious meal, but also providing an unforgettable experience. Between the incredible location boasting an ideal view of the warm Okinawan sunset to the friendly, knowledgeable staff and locally sourced ingredients, I know I will remember my dining experience at SeMare for the rest of my life. Youth Baseball and Softball Register Your Kid Today! Other than a much-needed break from the house, team sports, especially at a young age, can provide lasting positive impacts on both mental and physical health. Sports promote cooperative play, teamwork, sportsmanship and critical thinking skills as well as help improve motor skills, lower stress, burn fat and facilitate muscle growth. Socially, sports are a great way to make new friends, build self-esteem and become a part of the community. And oh, by the way, kids can also have a blast! It’s time to go to bat for your kiddos by registering them for Semper Fit Youth Sports’ baseball and softball season. Practices begin July 18 and the season’s opening games are scheduled for July 30. Dip Your Toes in… And Learn to Swim The weather is warming up here on Okinawa, and many are escaping the mugginess of the humidity by hopping in the water. But before you wade in waist deep, you should probably learn how to swim. Start by dipping your toes into the pool at the Camp Foster Aquatic Center and learn how to swim at one of their swim lessons! Other than potentially saving your life, learning how to swim properly has rippling effects on your health; it keeps your heart and lungs strong, increases stamina and improves balance and posture. It’s also a great form of low impact exercise. The Learn to Swim (LTS) Program offers a variety of classes for all

ages and skill levels starting at six months old through adult. Regular individual lessons are $75 (preschool to adults 16+), and Parent and Child lessons are $50. Each session includes eight consecutive weekday classes (weather permitting). The LTS Spring 4 session starts Monday, May 9 and goes until Wednesday, May 18. Registration is available via Eventbrite by 11 p.m. on May 5. For additional information visit mccsokinawa.com/ learntoswim, and if you have any questions about their Learn to Swim program, you can send an email to mccsaquatics@okinawa. usmc-mccs.org. 

Yomikikase Japanese Storytime Celebrate Golden Week at an MCCS Library! Every year in early May, students and members of the workforce breathe a sigh of relief and take a “golden” break from their routines in Japan. Collectively known as Golden Week, a series of national holidays that spans from April 29 to May 5, this period is one of the most highly anticipated weeks for many in Japan. The break begins on April 29 with Shōwa-no-Hi, which commemorates the birthday of the late Emperor Shōwa (Hirohito). May 3 is Kenpō Kinen-Bi (Constitution Day), which marks the anniversary of the establishment of the post-war constitution and May 4 is Greenery Day (a day set aside for communing with nature and be thankful for its blessings). Kodomo-no-Hi (Children’s Day) takes place May 5, marking the end of Golden Week. Lean more about Golden Week this month at an MCCS Library near you with a special all-ages storytime where kids can learn more about Kodomo-no-Hi as well as other holidays, Japanese culture, traditions and even some vocabulary. Dates and times for these events will vary by location—call your nearest library for details (a directory is available at mccsokinawa.com/librarycontact). Arisa Miller

Paint Nights Renowned local artist, Arisa Miller has her work prominently displayed both on- and off-base, most of which are in the form of large, intricately colored murals, such as the wings found on the side of the Marine Gift Shop on Camp Foster. She has lived on Okinawa her entire life, with a few extended stints in the United States. Of course, painting murals is a laborious and time-consuming process, but Arisa is excited by the physical and mental aspects of the challenge. She mostly uses her favorite medium—acrylic paints—for her projects, however; she also enjoys watercolors and has recently delved into digital art. When asked how living on Okinawa affects her work, she said, “Artistically, Okinawa is a land of color and deep passions, which provides a lot of my inspiration.” Most of Arisa’s pieces, or “daughters” as she lovingly refers to them, are imbued with her intrinsic drive to create and Okinawa’s champuru, or “harmonious mixture,” of unique cultures. They’re an outward display of her artistic expression, and an impression of the community. Since she

has the habit of forming attachments to every piece of artwork she’s created, it would be impossible for her to choose a favorite. And like many other creatives, she too struggles with creative blocks from time to time. To overcome artistic slowdowns, she simply adds more projects to her schedule. So, what’s on her schedule lately? Paint nights at MCCS Arts and Crafts! At a paint night lead by Arisa, you can expect to be surrounded with a lot of laughter and community spirit, while learning new painting techniques as well as challenging your preexisting abilities. According to Arisa, a paint night is the perfect opportunity to reset your mind, concentrate and create a masterpiece that you will be proud to take home. If you’re interested in checking out Arisa’s work, visit arisachienmiller.com. Sign up for a paint night by contacting MCCS Arts and Crafts by either emailing them at, artsandcrafts@ okinawa.usmc-mccs.org, or calling them at 098-954-7492 (Camp Courtney) or 098-970-3674 (Camp Foster). 

n Okinawa, the beginning of May oftentimes heralds tsuyuiri, or the “beginning of the rainy season.” Although vital to the island—as Okinawa’s reservoirs are filled with fresh water prior to summertime dry spells—tsuyu showers can make outdoor activities a wet endeavor. Everyone with children will probably agree that rainy days spent inside with restless children can be a source of stress and chaos to say the least (not that everyone with children isn’t used to this after the various levels of restrictions the last couple of years has brought us). Although it won’t be long until summer arrives with impossibly blue skies, towering Stay Puft clouds and brilliant sunshine, that’s still over the horizon. What is there to do on a rainy day on Okinawa when the skies are slate grey and the puddles are deep enough for a whale shark? Well, the answer is plenty!

IMMERSE YOURSELF IN LOCAL ART AND CULTURE Art is a subject that is near and dear to the hearts of the Okinawan people. At the Okinawa Prefectural Museum and Prefectural Art Museum in Naha, expressive paintings, sculptures, photographs, mixed media pieces, artifacts and fossils fill the halls and each piece tells a story. This sprawling facility features several cultural treasures salvaged from the ravages of war and time. The complex includes a separate museum of natural and cultural history, a large art gallery featuring exhibitions of modern Ryukyu art and a community area featuring examples of traditional architecture. All buildings feature a gusuku (castle) design motif, and the compound is surrounded by limestone walls echoing styles used during the days of the Ryukyu Kingdom.

VISIT AN ARTS AND CRAFTS CENTER MCCS Arts and Crafts Centers on Camps Foster and Courtney offer a variety of classes ranging from sketching, pastel and oils to ikebana ( Japanese flower arranging), kimekomi doll-making classes and more with offerings available for both adults and kids. Courtney Arts and Crafts also features a woodshop for DIY as well as ceramics and pottery. For more information on classes and hours of operation, visit mccsokinawa.com/artsandcrafts.

FAMILY TIME ROUND 1 Parents will definitely understand that rainy days can cause restlessness in kids (not to mention the potential risks to parental sanity). Round 1 Stadium, located across the street from Ginowan Marina, is a paradise for kids of all ages (including those in their 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s and 60s) where all this excess energy can be turned into a fun afternoon and an evening of restful slumber for both kids and parents. This multi-floor monstrosity features almost every activity imaginable—ranging from video games, batting cages and a full bowling center to giant ball pits for tots and much, much more.

CHURAUMI AQUARIUM

GRAB SOME ICE CREAM Although no one really needs rain as an excuse for enjoying a few large scoops of ice cream, its miraculous properties for chasing away any type of blues or doldrums is legendary. Blue Seal Ice Cream, a local favorite with locations virtually everywhere, features unique Okinawan flavors such as beni-imo (sweet potato), sugarcane, chinsko (Okinawan saltysweet cookies) along with more traditional favorites such as Neapolitan, Banana Susannah, San Francisco Mint Chocolate and many others.

DANCE IN THE RAIN Although this may sound strange, singing, dancing or playing in the rain is probably one of the most joyous of the previously mentioned options regardless of age. Artist and author Vivian Greene probably sums it up best: “Life isn’t about waiting for the storm to pass, it’s about learning to dance in the rain.” Or, better yet, a grassy slip-‘n-slide down a hill into a huge puddle with the whole family (including the dog). Don’t let the rain get you down…remember that without rain, there would be no rainbows! 

Churaumi Aquarium, located in Motobu, is a great place to visit the underwater world while remaining comfortably dry. Featuring one of the largest saltwater tanks in Japan, kids and parents alike will be both stunned and mesmerized by the residents of the many tanks ranging from jellyfish, tuna and mantas to giant groupers, octopi, whale sharks and dozens of others. The aquarium also offers golden opportunities to sneak a little education into a fun day.

MOVIE MARATHON Watch an entire saga or get a theme going! Go on a musical binge and sing “Under the Sea” with the kids, have an all-day Harry Potter marathon complete with wand waving or put on a classic Loony Tunes mix for laughs. Be sure to line up take-out food, fluff the pillows and grab the remote before getting comfortable (because having to get up after getting comfortable is the absolute worst.)

BAKE SOME COOKIES It doesn’t matter if they’re chocolate chip, peanut butter, oatmeal, vanilla or any other flavor, baking cookies is just plain therapeutic for the whole family. The home fills with a magical aroma that satisfies even before the first bite is taken. Bonus points are awarded for making cookies from scratch (not with a box with premixed portions ready to dump in a bowl or a frozen cylinder of cut-and-bake cookie dough).

Gōyā Champurū Serves four Ingredients • 1 tsp. extra virgin olive oil • 1 large gōyā cut to 1/16 inch slices (see below) • 2 garlic cloves, minced • 1/2 an onion, diced • 3/4 cup Okinawan Shima Tofu • 1/2 block of Spam, cut to 1/16 inch slices • 3 medium eggs, beaten • Dash of soy sauce • Dash of black pepper • Dash of Tabasco Sauce • 1 Tbsp. salt Method of Preparation 1. Slice gōyā lengthwise and remove seeds, gently scraping the inside with a spoon to remove all of the core. 2. Cut gōyā into 1/16 inch slices and place into a bowl. Sprinkle salt over the chopped gōyā and gently massage until thoroughly coated (this will temper the bitterness). Add cold water and let sit for 15–30 minutes. After soaking, rinse completely and set aside. 3. Using high heat, sauté oil, garlic, onions and Spam, cooking until garlic and onions become semi-translucent, then add gōyā. 4. When the gōyā is tender, crumble tofu into the mix and season with soy sauce, pepper and Tabasco until it reaches the desired flavor. 5. Pour in the beaten eggs and toss mixture until thoroughly coated— remembering not to overcook. 6. Serve with steamed white rice.

50th Anniversary of Reversion Some may wonder why many residents of the island prefer calling themselves Uchinānchu, or “Okinawans,” more than being called citizens of Japan even though they are very much so. Very few residents of other prefectures in mainland Japan formally call themselves names such as “Osakans” or “Tokyoites.” The reasons for this lie in the island’s past, and the word “reversion.” Okinawa was overseen by the United States for 27 years after the Battle of Okinawa until it was returned to Japan on May 15, 1972. This year marks the 50th anniversary of this reversion. Before reversion, the currency that was used on Okinawa wasn’t yen, it was the U.S. dollar. And, like in the United States, automobiles drove on the right side of the road (this was switched to left-hand side in 1978), and people from mainland Japan needed to pack their passport to enter the island. In addition, appropriate documentation and vaccinations were needed when Okinawans traveled to mainland Japan. Because of this unique situation, most Okinawans were not treated as actual citizens of the country during this period. Even before the war, Okinawa had only been an official part of Japan for a relatively short time—until 1879, it was a sovereign nation called “Ryukyu.” Many aspects of the island’s traditional culture show just as much influence from China and other Southeast Asian nations as

from Japan. Today, Okinawan culture also shows heavy influences from the United States—especially in the central part of the island where several military installations still stand. Today, for quite a few Uchinānchu, the country the island belongs to doesn’t define their identity, because the unique Ryukyu culture still lives on inside their hearts—just as it did during the days of the Ryukyu Kingdom. 
