Holiday Meals without the Fuss

K O

n Okinawa you can camp just about anywhere. It just depends on what you want out of your trip. Some locations are more inclined towards hiking, lounging, sightseeing, stargazing, lone-wolfing it, philosophizing, parties or fishing. Some places are established campsites and some are there for you to discover. But as long as you have a tent, you can be the keeper of hot dogs and the ruler of sand fleas at any beautiful spot on island. Whatever your reason to forgo the comforts of advanced society for a night or two, Okinawa’s beaches and parks are ideal in the fall. With temperatures in the mid-seventies, a fruitful excursion can be had with nothing more than a backpack stuffed with a tent, some franks and s’more supplies.

While beach camping might seem like the most obvious choice, there are a variety of camping options on island. If you want a less sandy experience, Comprehensive Park has camp sites, as well as the Okinawa Prefectural Forest Park. Forest Azaela Park and Hiji are two other woodsy camp spots available. Check this link for locations to many more camp sites on island, Yagaji Island (including the one featured in the photo)http://goo.gl/vEffP. Before you go, make sure you have everything you need. All camping necessities can be rented at Semper Fit Outdoor Recreation for a very reasonable fee (mccsokinawa.com/Outdoor_Recreation).

japanese phrase of the week

Japanese Homes

C Mō ichido itte kudasai Please say that again. For details about FREE Japanese language classes, please call Marine & Family Programs–Resources at 645-2104/2106.

ourtney: I stayed at a traditional Japanese house when I was vacationing in mainland and noticed how different the layout was compared to western housing. It was small but efficient and every space served multiple purposes. For instance, the room where we ate and lounged turned into the bedroom at night. Ryan: With the exception of the shower, bathroom, kitchen and entryway, traditional Japanese homes don’t have rooms designated for certain situations. Sliding partitions called fusuma expand or reduce a room. C: Another thing I noticed—the

shower and toilet were in different rooms, whereas in the States, the bathroom has your shower, sink and toilet all in the same room. Is there a purpose for this? R: Japanese homes originally didn’t have a toilet inside. When the toilet became part of the home, bathing and “waste disposal” were two things that were never to be combined. Fun fact: before the bathroom was moved indoors, poop was a fertilizer. Landowners owned the rights to bowels. The waste of wealthy people was the best, whereas the lowest grade came from prisons.

C: What’s the deal with tatami mats? That’s another thing you won’t find in a western home. R: It’s rice straw. Originally a luxury item but nowadays, rooms with tatami floors are somewhat rare. It may never fully retire but many modern homes don’t have them. Most of the housing differences reflect the cultures values, or are just practical solutions to a place’s geography. Things like the toilets are cultural differences, whereas space differences are geographical. The combination of the two (among many other things) makes for quite a different living experience.

Strong Military Couples

D

eployments are always stressful. Being apart and maintaining a strong relationship is a challenge for all military couples. The spouse at home has to continue daily activities and the deployed spouse must focus on the mission while away from home. While the end of a deployment and the reunion with your loved one is a happy time, reintegration can be difficult and challenging. Marine Corps Family Team Building’s forum, Strong Military Couples, helps couples assess their recent deployment and reunion.

This workshop discusses the effects of reintegration on the relationship and provides communication tools and resources that can strengthen a relationship. All participants will receive a free copy of the book, The 5 Love Languages Military Edition: The Secret to Love That Lasts, which explores communication and expression specific to a military marriage. This workshop will be held on November 13 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the MCFTB building on Camp Foster. Register online at mccsokinawa.com/ mcftb. Call 645-3689.
