“Welcome” to Okinawa Living

Thirteen MCCS Okinawa restaurant and hospitality activities were among 30 recognized Marine Corps-wide for their exceptional performance in 2021 with Food and Hospitality Excellence Awards.

The Food and Hospitality Excellence Award Program was established by Marine Corps Community Services at Headquarters, Marine Corps to recognize restaurant and hospitality activities that exceed the highest level of operational excellence and service. The award program allows any club, restaurant, snack bar or lodging facility, regardless of size or location, to measure their results against criteria in pre-established categories of customer service, financial performance, human resources development and operational excellence.

The criteria to achieve this award focus well beyond financial performance; to achieve an Excellence Award, activities must be agile and seasoned, and place the customer at the center of all they do. To recognize this achievement, the activities will receive award plaques and window clings that will be displayed in the facilities.

The Palms Consolidated Club on Camp Hansen—which was named the 2022 Marine Corps Club of the Year—shined the brightest amongst the 13 winners as well as all other Marine Corps clubs worldwide. In addition to The Palms, the following facilities on Okinawa were honored: Ocean Breeze Consolidated Club, TERRA Restaurant, Bonsai Café, Bulldogs Burgers, Sumo Burrito, LifeJuice Café and Inns of the Corps on Camp Foster; LifeJuice facilities on Camps Hansen and Courtney; BeachHead Consolidated Club and LifeJuice on Camp Schwab and past winner of “Restaurant of the Year,” Taiyo Steakhouse, located at Taiyo Golf Club.

Please join us as we offer our congratulations on a job well done! For more information about the winning facilities and other MCCS Clubs and Restaurants, including menus, operating hours and locations, visit mccsokinawa.com/clubs. 

feedback from the ICE Program and Facebook

I absolutely love this CDC [Chura Warabi Childcare Center on Camp Courtney]! Ms. Melissa Acosta is so welcoming every morning. My son enjoys going there every day as the staff is so friendly and personable. Ms. Maritza Velazquez-Rivera, the director, is amazing and makes it a point to get to know every kid and their family. My son adores Ms. Kazue Matsuda as she always welcomes us in the morning so warmly and Ms. Dayna Broadstreet as she is so kind and gentle. It’s always a pleasure interacting with the staff and I would like to thank you all!

I would really like to thank the staff at Bulldogs [Burgers on Camp Foster] for going above and beyond for our children the evening of Kubasaki High School’s Homecoming. They were the most accommodating staff members I have ever met. I want them both to know how much we parents truly appreciate them showing so much kindness to our kids during a memorable night for them.

Shout out to Krista Hurley! I called her at the Camp Hansen Education Center to go over questions regarding where to look for employment on Okinawa after my service in the USMC. I was not even sure this was an education center question, but that did not stop her from providing stellar customer service and sharing her knowledge. Coincidently, she is in the very kind of position I am aspiring towards! Thank you, Krista!

The Foster Custom Shop saved the day for me! I had a rush order for a Torii Gate plaque and went into the Custom Shop on September 19. Katie Allman was so generous with her time and expertise; not only did she show me examples of different plaques available in the shop, but she also showed me photos of other projects completed by the staff. She spent lots of time with me to ensure I got exactly what I needed—and they got it to me in time! The Custom Shop employees are superstars! Thank you very much!

Thank you for taking time out of your busy day to share your experience at the Foster Custom Shop. The staff there always prides themselves with providing the best service possible, and we are glad that it didn’t go unnoticed. I will share your wonderful compliment with the team and ensure that Katie knows how she made your day a better one.

On behalf of Sonny’s family, I just want to say thank you for your heartfelt condolences. My brother [the late Lawrence “Sonny” Gibbs, Taiyo Golf Club Course Professional] loved what he did and loved the people and students that he worked with. Now I understand because you are all great people. I will cherish my memories and good times with him forever. Thanks to everyone for posting your memories and feelings about Sonny. I am so proud to be his brother. — Ricky Gibbs via Facebook

Kinser Half Marathon

Half the Distance, Double the Fun

The story goes that way back in the day (around 490 B.C.), a Greek foot messenger sprinted from the Battle of Marathon to Athens— roughly 25 miles—to share news of Greece’s victory over the Persian army. With no water stations, running gels or proper arch support in sight, the messenger promptly collapsed and died upon delivering the news. To honor this messenger’s deed, the marathon race was born—with the first official Olympic race being won by Spyridon Louis in 1896 in a time of 2:58:50.

Fast-forward to 2019, when Elius Kipchoge (who many consider the greatest marathoner of all time) achieved something that many thought was physically impossible—he was the first human to break the 2-hour marathon barrier running 26.2 miles in 1:59:40 on a special course in Vienna, Austria under controlled circumstances. He also owns the official world record in competitive marathons, breaking his own record by finishing 2:01:09 in Berlin in 2022.

Although breaking Kipchoge’s world record (or carrying messages to Athens, for that matter) may not be in the cards, you can still smoke the competition and break your own personal best on Sunday, November 20 starting at 8:05 a.m. at the Kinser Half Marathon. This 13.1-mile race, which will wind around Camp Kinser, is open to runners island wide ages 12 and older. Prospective participants must register online for $40 at mccsokinawa.com/adultsports before November 16 at 11:30 p.m. Check-ins will take place from 6:35 to 7:35 a.m. and a mandatory brief will take place at 7:35 a.m. The top female and male competitors will receive grand prizes while the top 3 performers in each gender/age category will likewise be awarded. For more information, follow facebook.com/mccsokinawa.semperfit. For questions, email adultsports@okinawa.usmc-mccs.org.

Here’s how it’ll go down: Teams can have up to 20 players plus a coach (if the coach is playing, that counts against the 20-player limit) with a maximum of eight players allowed on the field at any given time. Moreover, teams that place 1st, 2nd or 3rd will receive awards. Lastly, the field itself will be a whole 100 yards long (including end zones) and 40 yards wide, so it is highly recommended you do not eat your Thanksgiving leftovers immediately prior to playing.

Players must be 16 and older and must register through mccsokinawa.com/adultsports for $150 per team before November 21 at 1 p.m. For more information, head to facebook.com/mccsokinawa.semperfit If you have any questions, please email adultsports@ okinawa.usmc-mccs.org 

Futenma Open Soccer Tournament

The island may be cooling down, but the heat of competition will be at peak summertime levels on MCAS Futenma! Are you the master of the banana kick from the corner? Is your offside trap good enough to fool the wiliest midfielder?

Most importantly, is your team good enough to be crowned as victors at the Futenma Open 6v6 Soccer Tournament this year? Find out on November 12 and 13 at the MCAS Futenma soccer field, where 6-member squads (plus a coach, if your coach isn’t playing) will square off in the coolest shootout on the island. This tournament is open to teams island wide (consisting of players 16 years and older), and registration is due by November 7 (1 p.m.) via mccsokinawa.com/adultsports for $150 per team. Awards will be given to 1st, 2nd and 3rd place teams.

Kinser Powerlifting Competition

Attention all swole warriors and musclebound folk! We interrupt your workout to bring you this very important message: the Camp Kinser Powerlifting Competition is back! If you’ve got the strength and mental toughness to call yourself a powerlifter, come stake your claim at Camp Kinser’s Surfside, where the strongest lifters on island will be in attendance on Sunday, December 4 at 9 a.m.

The competition will consist of three events—squat, bench press and deadlift (in that order)—with three attempts allowed on each event. Participants will be divided into gender and weight categories, and at the end of the day when all of the scores are tallied, the top three lifters in each weight/gender category will go home with medals. For the Writers

Write one word at a time. Although a simple statement, it’s the reality of what it takes as a writer to hone their craft or to complete that brand-new bestseller. But there is another secret to being a successful writer, and it’s finding a community of writers or a writing group. Meeting with this group of congruous creatives can help with the flow of ideas and words, as a group of trusted peers can be that backboard to bounce ideas off or be that keen pair of eyes to pick out the bits that interrupt a piece’s flow.

But where can one find a little village of wordsmiths toiling away at keyboards or scribbling plot ideas in notebooks? At the Camp Foster Library, of course! Every Tuesday at 6 p.m., all writers—emerging, published, beginners, seasoned, etc.—are welcome to come connect,

meet personal writing goals/word counts and utilize library resources, including books on the writing craft and a FREE workshop hosted by NaNoWriMo—a nonprofit organization that supports literacy, education and writing fluency. And don’t worry, even if your novel is an idea that has been living in your head rent-free, the NaNoWriMo workshop will help to evict it and get it on the page or screen.

There is no registration required, so simply mark your calendar for Tuesdays at 6 p.m. You can either bring your work with you via laptop or notebook or take advantage of one of the many com puters available at the library. For more information and inquiries regarding this FREE workshop, visit mccsokinawa.com/libraries or call Camp Foster Library at 645-7178.

Coaching for the Win

Volunteer with Semper Fit Youth Sports

Inspiring, encouraging, fun-loving, dedicated, goal-oriented, patient and optimistic are attributes we might all strive to have, but when you’ve got them all, there’s a role that might be perfect for you: youth sports coach.

Your team is bound to win sometimes and lose sometimes— that is the nature of sports after all, but your biggest win as a coach probably won’t be hiding within your team’s record. Coaching can be your chance to connect with the community, and you may even find yourself creating lifelong friendships. While each athlete on a team has an important role to play and position to fill, as a mentor, a coach can influence much more than athletic development. Important life lessons in areas such as teamwork, self-discipline, good sportsmanship and countless others are yours to impart. And a wise coach will know there are plenty of lessons to be learned from working with children and their families.

As a volunteer coach, you may find yourself working on selfimprovement, too. You will have ample opportunities to work

on your communication and organizational skills, your talent as a manager and you may even improve your health. You certainly don’t have to be the world’s best athlete or in tip-top shape to be a coach, but you’ll definitely be on the move and keeping yourself active for a few extra hours each week while teaching kids about sports and fitness.

Semper Fit Youth Sports programs span most of the year with seasons for baseball, softball, basketball, cheerleading and soccer, so there are plenty of coaching opportunities to go around. Currently, Youth Sports is seeking coaches for the upcoming soccer season. Assistant coaches must be at least 16 years of age; head coaches must be at least 18 years of age, and all interested volunteers may submit a coaching application packet. For more information about becoming a Semper Fit Youth Sports Coach or to download your application packet, visit mccsokinawa.com/coachescorner. For inquiries, call 6453533 or email youthsports@okinawa.usmc-mccs.org 

Take the Plunge

The Great American Smokeout

Are you thinking about quitting smoking but not sure you’re ready to take the plunge? Maybe the Great American Smokeout is for you! It’s an opportunity to join millions of other smokers in saying “no thanks” to cigarettes for 24 hours.

Held the third Thursday in November every year, the Great American Smokeout is sponsored by the American Cancer Society. The purpose of the event is to help smokers quit cigarettes for at least one day, in hopes they will quit forever. More people quit smoking on this day than any other day of the year.

The rules are simple: On Thursday, November 17 you simply quit smoking for 24 hours. The wonderful thing is that you won’t be alone—you can swap advice, jokes and groans with the other “quitters,” nonsmokers, and Semper Fit Health Promotion staff who will be cheering you on.

For more information about the Great American Smokeout or Tobacco Cessation classes, contact MCCS Health Promotion at 6453910 or send an email to mccshealthpromotions@ okinawa.usmc-mccs.org. 

SMP Lunch & Learn

The Two Perfect Words

Now there’s two words in a phrase that are perfect together, lunch…and learn. Although we love the alliteration because we like to write, an opportunity to learn something new is something we should all value, and, of course, when lunch is involved that only makes it better.

Single and unaccompanied Marines and Sailors interested in learning and eating can join the MCCS Family Advocacy Program at Camp Foster’s Single Marine Program in Bldg. 5908 on the last Wednesday of the month for a tasty lunch and some educational fun.

What’s there to learn? Well, plenty! Family Advocacy Program Prevention and Education Specialists will be teaching skills and knowledge regarding behavioral health, with November’s topic focusing on stress management. In addition to the brief, Prevention and Education Specialists will provide active-duty service members with information on all the behavioral health services available on Okinawa. The best part? FREE lunch is being provided by the Single Marine Program during the brief.

In addition to Behavioral Health Overview briefs, the Family Advocacy Program also hosts briefs such as Domestic Violence/Child Abuse Prevention trainings, Healthy Dating, Conflict Resolution and Stress Management. Additionally, they offer a Century Anger Management class: Re-train Your Brain.

Why not serve up a little convenience along with your traditional spread this year? Holiday Meals-To-Go—an annual MCCS offering—makes ordering, picking up and serving a taste of home easy as pie (more on pies later). This catering option gives you the choice of ordering complete meals or à la carte selections.

For a crowd-pleasing meal, choose one of two Traditional Holiday Packages—the Classic 20–22 lb. Turkey Package with Holiday Sides or the Deluxe 9 lb. Glazed Hickory Smoked Ham Package with Holiday Sides. Looking for a taste of both? Go for the Holiday Feast Combination Package, which also comes with double sides and two pies.

To accompany the whole-roasted turkeys and glazed hickory-smoked hams, MCCS chefs are cooking up plenty of side dishes as well, including mashed potatoes, gravy, cranberry sauce, candied yams, green beans and herb-seasoned bread stuffing. And, of course, the aforementioned pies for

dessert! Choose from apple, pumpkin or pecan to complete your feast.

These seasonal meals are available from Surfside on Camp Kinser, Ocean Breeze on Camp Foster, Tengan Castle on Camp Courtney and The Palms on Camp Hansen. Cowboy Burger

…Is Back in Town

The Cowboy Burger is back in town, at large and still wanted on account of being too gosh darn tasty (and bamboozling the authorities). Reportedly, sheriffs have record of the scrumptious criminal hanging around its usual hideout—Bulldogs Burgers locations island wide.

The reward for corralling the Cowboy Burger—packing a juicy beef patty on a house-baked buttered bun loaded with crispy onion petals, bacon, lettuce, tomato and ranch dressing—is a happy stomach and some seriously satisfied taste buds.

But watch out! Word on the street is…it’s known to team up with some equally savory accomplices such as crispy French Fries or Sweet Potato Fries, the famous Cup of Chili or the ruthless and tangy rebel, Ms. Cole slaw. Youth Sports Soccer Registration Sign-up Gooooals!

Participating in team sports at a young age has lasting positive impacts—both physically and emotionally. For starters, it promotes cooperative play, teamwork and sportsmanship. It also helps improve motor skills and self-esteem. And, of course, it’s also a great and fun way to make new friends.

Soccer not only requires intelligence, fitness and agility, but it also builds stamina and improves cardiovascular health. And aside from being extremely beneficial to their health, soccer (among many other sports) also teaches children the valuable lessons of struggling and triumphing in the face of adversity.

Weekend soccer games can provide some of those tough, real-life situations, such as regrouping after an unfair yellow card or coming back and winning the next match after a disheartening loss. Above

all, soccer is a team sport that teaches that working together towards a common goal with teammates supersedes perceived differences between individuals.

Registration for the Youth Sports 2023 Soccer season is here, and all soccer players ages 5 to 18 are welcome to join. Children 4 years of age are also welcome, but only as long as they turn 5 prior to the final day of the season.

Registration will be accepted via mccsokinawa.com/youthsports November 1–30. Practices begin the week of February 6, 2023, and the official season runs from February 18 to May 13, 2023. Your last chance to sign up your athlete is November 30, so make sure to visit mccsokinawa.com/youthsports 

When one thinks of a tea party, visions of armed gentry soldiers in bearskin hats, gleaming silverware accompanied by delicate porce lain dishes, and ladies in opulent dresses with dozens of layers and fancy feathered hats may be some of the first things that come to mind. Although these cogitations may accurately depict tea parties during the 1800s, it’s not exactly what the Camp Foster Library has in mind…

On Tuesday, November 8 starting at 11 a.m., prehistoric tea guests will take over the Camp Foster Library, and you and your kiddos are cordially invited to join us for this “dinomite” occasion! Tea guests are encouraged to stomp around in their best Cretaceous-wear (i.e. dinosaur costumes), tutus, bowties or any fancy party dress! Accessories—such as full-length gloves, top hats or pearl necklaces are not required…but are strongly encouraged. Imagine all the tiny tyrannosaurus tromping around in their black top hats and monocles or tutus and lace gloves, gobbling up bitesized accoutrements.

Speaking of accoutrements, the Dinosaur Tea Party will include a storytime read-aloud of Molly Idle’s Tea Rex, light refreshments such as finger sandwiches, cookies and juice as well as real live special guest Tyrannosaurus Rex! Well…not actually a real dinosaur, but someone in an inflatable dinosaur suit. For more information visit mccsokinawa.com/libraries or contact Foster Library at 645-7178. 

It was on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918 when rifles fell silent and an armistice was forged between Germany and Allied Forces (which included the United States), putting an end to World War I. MCCS Markets

It May be Junk to You…

A wise person once said “waste not, want not…” However, try as we might, we always somehow seem to end up with stuff that we really don’t need (and some items we can’t even remember buying such as that exercise bike now being used as a clothes rack). The best answer isn’t busting your gut hauling it to the curb as garbage; turn your unwanted items into cash at an MCCS Flea Market!

Whether you’re interested in turning some of your belongings into cash, or you’re a glutton for punishment shopping for more new-to-you items, here’s what to know. MCCS Flea Markets on Camp Foster are held from noon to 3 p.m., and Camp Courtney hosts a flea market from 7 to 10 a.m. For a full schedule of upcoming dates and maps to locations, visit mccsokinawa.com/fleamarket. Booths for sellers are available to SOFA ID card holders island wide and are granted on a first-come, first-served basis. To reserve a booth, arrive on-site an hour early and pay the $15 cash fee. SOFA and non-SOFA shoppers are welcome, so sellers should plan to make change in both dollars and yen.

Aside from finding your next treasure or going home to a cleaner closet, flea markets help reduce trash, which is great—especially since an estimate at ¥10 billion is spent on waste disposal on Okinawa each year. MCCS Flea Markets do have certain rules and requirements, so be sure to review these policies at mccsokinawa.com/fleamarkets. For more information, call MCCS Special Events at 645-5829. 

BREEZES COOL

Summer is officially over. While this is normally a sad statement on a subtropical island where some of the best activities involve either relaxing on beaches or jumping into emerald green seas and visiting Okinawa’s underwater residents, this isn’t altogether true. So, what is there to do when the weather cools and lying on the beach is no longer a very pleasurable option? The answer is: explore the island.

Autumn is the perfect time for taking long walks and hiking in the hills. It’s also the perfect time of year to jump in your car (or even better, rent a convertible and drop the top) for cruising Okinawa’s coastlines and drinking in the fresh cool air and million-dollar scenery.

New to the island and don’t know where to start, you say? Following are a few of our favorite locales to enjoy a scenic autumn drive on Okinawa.

YAGAJI & KOURI ISLAND

Yagaji and Kouri Islands, which are connected to northern Okinawa via bridges, are a perfect destination for an autumn drive as summer tourists are few and traffic is at a minimum. These two tiny, idyllic isles offer very little in the form of modern conveniences but make up for that with countless nooks and crannies of pure island paradise. Yagaji is a tiny islet connected to Nakijin Village, Nago City and Kouri Island via bridges—the most impressive of which is Warumi Bridge, which links Nakijin to Yagaji. Warumi is an arch bridge; it’s actually Okinawa’s longest concrete arch at 315m in length and soars 37.4m above the water—which seems a lot higher when you’re driving over it.

Bordering the Haneji Inland Sea, Yagaji’s coast features natural groves of Ryukyu pine and large pockets of mangroves. The mangrove forests offer a great opportunity for studying a unique ecosystem, with the octopus-like roots of the semi-aquatic plants offering solace to crabs, birds and countless small fish.

Kouri Island is connected to Yagaji Island via Kouri Bridge. This bridge, which is one of Japan’s longest toll-free spans, is truly picturesque—all 1,960m of it. Driving on this bridge on a sunny day gives travelers the illusion of flying over the emerald green and cobalt-blue waters below.

Kouri Island proper is circular and made mostly of coral. A simple and rustic place, Kouri Island’s main sources of income are agriculture (sugarcane and ube potatoes), fishing and harvesting the roe of bafun-uni sea urchins. While you’re there, be sure to visit Kouri Beach, “heart rock” beach and Kouri Ocean Tower. Kouri Ocean Tower features a spire that gives visitors a panoramic view of the entire island, including the bridge below. The facility also features two restaurants, a gift shop and a shell museum with 10,000 specimens—some as rare as they are beautiful.

YOKATSU ISLANDS

The Yokatsu Islands primarily consist of Ikei, Henza, Miyagi and Hamahiga Islands. Connected to Uruma City by bridge, these islands are a beach lover’s, snorkeler’s and diver’s paradise in the summertime. Probably one of the more popular drive destinations, the trip to Yokatsu begins by traversing Kaicho Doro (which roughly translates to “road over the sea”). The first stop is Henza, which is mostly oil refineries and tank farms with nothing much to see. However, it is connected to Hamahiga and Mi-

KUNIGAMI

Far north of Nago, the largest city in northern Okinawa, roads dwindle into single lane thoroughfares that wind along on the coast piercing rocky cliffs via tunnels bored through the rocks—making this area the perfect place to “get away from it all.”

The northern-most area of the island is called Kunigami Village, a sparsely popu lated area where the main source of income hasn’t changed that much in the last century or two—farming and fishing. The residents of Kunigami live their lives quietly and close to nature.

Kunigami is the perfect place for a drive in that aforementioned convertible. The air is different in northern Okinawa—clearer, cleaner and downright invigorating. While up north, be sure to stop by Hedo Point, the island’s northern-most location where the Pacific and East China Sea meet. The colors of the waters—ranging from deep cobalt and emerald topped by pristine white surf to grey gunmetal intermingled with murky froth— directly reflect the mood of the weather and sky. During windy days, the surf breaking on the craggy shorelines explodes upwards with sheer violence so visitors should keep a safe distance. On calmer days, however, the colors of the seas serenely complement the sunrises and sunsets that fill the nooks and crannies of the cliffs with golden light.

These areas are—as you’ve probably already guessed—just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to places to take an autumn drive on Okinawa. Remember, while exploring is about discovery, it is also about discovering. As you explore Okinawa, it may help to keep in mind a few words of an author named Douglas Adams: “I may not have gone where I intended to go, but I think I have ended up where I intended to be.” 

BEFORE YOU GO

Before heading out, es pecially to more remote areas where cellphone reception can range from bad to non-exis tent, remember to plan your trip wisely by pack ing a couple of good maps and bring along a buddy to navigate as you drive. Also, before you hit the open road, don’t neglect your car; be sure to start your trip with a full tank of gas and, while you’re at it, check your oil and the air in your tires—it’s always better to be safe than sorry. Additionally, the more remote areas on Okinawa usually don’t accept US dollars (or credit cards), so stop by an ATM and get some yen for the expressway, admission fees, drinks and food. And, most importantly, inform a friend of your itinerary before leaving.

THE AIR IS DIFFERENT IN NORTHERN OKINAWA— CLEARER, CLEANER AND DOWNRIGHT INVIGORATING.

Yaki Gyōza

(Pot Stickers)

Serves 8 to 10 (as an appetizer)

Ingredients

1/2 lb. ground pork

3/4 cup shredded cabbage

1 green onion, diced

2 tsp. ginger, minced

1 egg, lightly beaten

1 tsp. soy sauce

Method of Preparation

1/4 tsp. hot chili oil (or to taste)

1/4 tsp. sesame oil

2 tbsp. vegetable oil

30 gyōza wrappers (available at any local grocery store)

1/2 cup water

1. Bring a pot of salted water to a boil. Blanch the shredded cabbage until it is slightly tender (roughly 2 minutes). Plunge cabbage into ice-cold water, drain thoroughly, and set aside.

2. In a medium bowl, combine everything except for the vegetable oil, water and gyoza wrappers. Knead mixture until it is blended thoroughly and has a pasty texture.

3. Lay a gyōza wrapper in front of you and lightly moisten the edges with water. Place a teaspoon of filling in the middle of the wrapper. Fold the sides up to form a semicircle, and then firmly pinch/fold the edges to seal completely (usually six equally spaced pinches/folds work best). Continue with the rest of the wrappers until the filling is gone.

4. To cook, heat vegetable oil in a heavy frying pan over medium-high to high heat. Add 12 15 of the gyōza (without overcrowding the pan) and cook for two minutes, or until they’re golden brown and crispy on the bottom.

5. Add 1/2 cup of water to the pan. Cover the pan and steam the gyōza until the water has evaporated (5–7 minutes). Repeat with the remainder and enjoy!

Shichi-Go-San

Although many in Japan aren’t ardent practitioners of either Buddhism or Shinto, many still go to shrines and temples during certain special occasions. For most parents, Shichi-Go-San (which translates to “seven-five-three”) is one of these occasions. During Shichi-Go-San, families with boys ages 3 and 5 or girls ages 3 and 7 visit Shinto shrines to celebrate their children’s growth and health.

Shichi-Go-San was originally a children’s “coming of age” rite that was practiced by samurai families during the Muromachi period (1338–1466 AD). During this time period, the death rate of babies and infants was exceptionally high in Japan. Because of this, children who lived to reach the ages of 3, 5 and 7 were cause for thanksgiving and celebration.

Traditionally, all family members—including grandparents, aunts and uncles—would dress formally and visit local shrines to express their gratitude to the gods. Boys turning 5 wore hakama (men’s kimono), and 7-year-old girls wore kimono with the obi belt for the first time. Nowadays during Shichi-Go-San, some girls still wear kimono, but many more wear formal dresses. Many boys don western suits complete with a tie—although the Demon Slayer manga/anime has helped cause a resurgence in the popularity of hakama.

Because Shichi-Go-San isn’t formally recognized as a national holiday, families visit shrines on weekends around the middle of November. 

May Your Days Be Merry and Bright!

Traditionally, the winter holidays are about sharing good times and festive meals with loved ones—making them very merry. However, for someone living thousands of miles away from family, friends and the familiar sights and sounds of home, the holidays can appear to be tinged a very different shade. Holi day blues—the feelings of loss or sadness that some experience during the holiday season—most often strike when people are away from those that they love.

Even for those that are here with family, the holidays can mean busy schedules, party planning, shopping, tension and a fair amount of stress. In addition, finances can be another source of stress— overspending during the holidays can increase tensions as people try to make ends meet while ensuring everyone on their gift list is “happy.” Physical demands, including the strain of actual shopping and wrapping, attending social gatherings and preparing holiday meals can simply wipe people out. Feeling exhausted increases stress, creating a vicious cycle.

To help alleviate holiday stress and help chase away these blues, MCCS will once again be offering many activities to make Okinawa, mainland Japan, South Korea and Guam “Your Home for the Holidays.” Events include activities promoting healthy stress-free living, FREE athletic tournaments for Marines and Sailors, FREE events and food at SMP centers throughout the holiday season and much, much more.

This year, offerings include drawings for FREE Holiday MealsTo-Go packages, holiday movies at the pool, ugly sweater contests galore, FREE cocoa and holiday goodies, powerlifting tournaments, trips, FREE bowling…and this is just the tip of the iceberg for those stationed on Okinawa, Camp Fuji in mainland Japan, Camp Mujuk in South Korea and on Camp Blaz in Guam.

Check out mccsokinawa.com/holidays for a full listing of 2022 Your Home for the Holidays offerings taking place this year and take advantage of these FREE events, entertainment and more to make your holiday season merry and bright.
