mensôre “Welcome” to Okinawa Living

Tsuyu-iri On Okinawa, the month of May oftentimes heralds tsuyu-iri, or the “beginning of the rainy season.” Although vital to the island—as Okinawa’s reservoirs are filled with fresh water prior to summertime dry spells— heavy tsuyu showers can make outdoor activities such as hiking or river trekking a non-starter. During normal times, parents would probably agree that rainy days spent inside with restless children is a source of stress and chaos to say the least. Although by now, staying indoors— whether it’s raining or not—has become very familiar to us all. Being locked down has been a harsh reality for all of us here on Okinawa along with the rest of the world. But there is a silver lining to all of this—battling COVID-19 together has brought us all closer together. Being cooped up together with family or separated from friends probably brought to light many aspects of our relationships that were unrecognized or simply taken for granted. And many small joys in life—having a cup of coffee with friends at a local coffee shop, taking the kids to the mall or even shaking someone’s hands in greeting or congratulations—now seem all that much more important and fulfilling, someday. After the rainy season has finished and COVID-19-related restrictions have lifted—hopefully—hit a few rivers and waterfalls to refresh yourself from the sticky humidity and cure your cabin fever. Or, gather your friends and go chase some rainbows. Remember, without rain, there wouldn’t be any to chase! As always, we would like to thank you for picking up Okinawa Living Magazine. Now, time to turn the page and let your journey begin…again!

feedback from the ICE Program and Facebook I just wanted to extend my absolute appreciation for all of the hard work MCCS has been doing with not only keeping the fitness facilities open and CLEAN, but also showcasing a staff that is never short on professionalism, positivity and responsiveness. With restrictions and limitations due to COVID-19 only increasing, the one thing that has remained constant and very much needed are the services and programs offered through your fitness centers. I can imagine how the increased measures and increased hours put on the staff, to ensure ongoing support to the Marines, could take its toll. It has not gone unnoticed. Please continue to shine and keep up on the incredible job you all are doing across the island! I know I speak for all Marines when I say, THANK YOU! —via ICE Thank you for your kind words. We are especially pleased that our staff’s efforts haven’t gone unnoticed and we will pass these compliments to all of our employees. This form of appreciation keeps all of us motivated to continue to go above and beyond in supporting our Marines, Sailors and their families residing in our military community. Thank you once again for taking the time and effort to give us your feedback. —Gordon Foreman, Assistant Athletic Director, Foster Athletics

OUT + ABOUT

MAY 2020 | OKINAWA LIVING 9

OUT + ABOUT

Known as Fuji-san to the people of Japan, Mt. Fuji is considered as one of the most sacred sites in the country and it has been regarded so for centuries. A source of inspiration for artists and poets, this 3,700+ meter tall dormant stratovolcano is also a source of inspiration for climbers as it stands silent and stoic— beckoning and challenging all that stand in its shadow to reach its summit.

BIGSTOCK.COM

Ready to take the challenge? Careful planning and consideration is required before making the trek up Fuji. On average, it takes between 4 to 10 hours to ascend the mountain and anywhere from 2 to 6 hours to descend.

MAY 2020 | OKINAWA LIVING 11

OUT + ABOUT

During the months of July and August, more than 200,000 from Japan and throughout the world make the climb up precipitous trails to the illustrious summit. Some climbers choose to climb Mt. Fuji during the night and early morning hours to witness sunrise at the summit, an amazing experience if the clouds are accommodating.

BIGSTOCK.COM

The climb may seem overwhelming but as climbers pass through the last torii gate and gaze upon the vast expanse of farm land, hills, clouds and sky—a sense of awe and amazement captivates the mind, body and soul.

MAY 2020 | OKINAWA LIVING 13

OUT + ABOUT

Mt. Fuji's climbing season is during the summertime ( July 1–August 31). During other times of the year it is best enjoyed from afar—offering stunning backdrops to photographs and paintings.

BIGSTOCK.COM

This summer, Tours+ will be offering once-in-a-lifetime opportunities to climb this iconic peak. Due to the strenuous nature of this tour—high altitude as well as extended hiking and climbing—good physical condition is advised. Pregnant women are required to have a doctor's note to climb and this tour is not recommended for children under age 5. Call 646-3502 for tour dates and more information. Freediving Diving WITHOUT Gear People have been freediving for centuries to put food (in this case fish) on the table. Today, it’s quickly becoming a popular activity as well as a competitive sport with freedivers reaching depths beyond 100 meters on a single breath in competitions overseen by international confederations. Unlike scuba, there’s nothing quite like diving into the deep blue depths unencumbered by tanks or BCDs… with only a mask, snorkel and fins. It’s a beautiful and meditative experience that makes you appreciate the beauty of nature and the preciousness of being human. Interested in taking the first step into freediving? You can sign up for a course with Tsunami Scuba! Both basic and intermediate freediver courses will be offered. Stay tuned to facebook.com/mccsokinawa.scuba for dates, times and prices.

Getting Gear…and Caring for it Tsunami Scuba is so much more than just a 5-Star PADI Instructor Development Center; they have one of the largest selections of dive gear available anywhere on the island—everything from dive apparel to kids’ masks, snorkels, longfins and everything in between. Looking for Scubapro or Aqua Lung BCDs? They’ve got them! New regulator, Suunto dive computer and Omer fins? Yup! And, what’s more, it’ll all be on sale May 23–25! The Tsunami Scuba Memorial Day Sale will offer 10% off all retail items (excluding educational materials and booties) at Tsunami Scuba locations on Camps Hansen and Foster. There’s no better time to get geared up. For those already equipped, Tsunami also can repair and service your dive gear— including hydrostatic testing of tanks. According to the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT), all pressure tanks (such as scuba cylinders) must pass an initial DOT certification, visual inspection and hydrostatic test before being sold or filled. After the first test, a new one must be done every 5 years (some special tanks are every 3 years). Tsunami Scuba is DOT certified. This means your tanks will receive a U.S. DOT stamp and so will not require retesting when you PCS to your next duty station. The cost is $60 for the hydrostatic test, visual inspection and air fill (parts and valve rebuild labor require additional costs).

YAYIMAGES/DEPOSITPHOTOS.COM, MIKE DALEY

Hitting the Water Now that you’re equipped and your gear is in tip-top shape, you’re probably looking for the best dive sites. Whether you are into gardens of coral, prefer macro-shooting clownfish, swimming with sea turtles or sighting sharks (from a safe distance, of course), the professionals at Tsunami Scuba can point you in the right direction—and even give details directing you to the site and describing what you’ll see and where! MCCS Tsunami Scuba, in conjunction with Tours+, also offers a diver’s dream-come-true—Individual Dive Travel Packages! Let the pros at Tsunami Scuba and Tours+ take the hassle out of booking your next dream dive vacation. With literally thousands of dive properties and resorts worldwide at their fingertips, they’re sure to have the destination that YOU want to go to—all you have to do is choose the date and they do all the rest! For more information on Individual Dive Packages, visit your nearest Tours+ or Tsunami Scuba Center. What are you waiting for? Get certified, gear up and dive in! For more information on all Tsunami Scuba offerings, call your nearest center or visit them online at mccsokinawa.com/scuba.

Golf Tips from the Pros Quick Tip for Chipping “Keep it simple and just use your putting stroke when close to the green. A 7-iron up to a sand wedge can be used based on your needed flight-to-roll ratio. Play the ball back, keep your hands directly below the sternum and put more weight on the target side leg. Then, try to roll the ball just like a putt and let the loft of the club take care of the launch angle.” —Todd Toohey, Taiyo Golf Club Manager & PGA Professional

Kerama Snorkeling Tours Discover a Whole New World Snorkeling in the waters surrounding this beautiful island is one of Okinawa’s most popular pastimes—especially during the summer months. Not only is snorkeling fun and rewarding no matter what age, the entire family can discover a whole new world. Tours+ offers snorkeling tours to the beautiful azure waters surrounding the Kerama Islands all summer. You too can explore the depths and beauty of these blues with Tours+. These tours include a boat ride to two snorkeling spots. Don’t worry about an awkward entry walking on fins, just relax and enjoy the ride.

When the boat arrives at its destination, you can just dive right in. Grab your gear and get ready for some fun! Bring lunch, hydration, snorkeling set (mask, snorkel, fins and approved personal flotation vest/device), and wetsuits (if desired). Pregnant women and children under the age of four aren’t permitted on this tour. All tours take place from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Call 646-3502 for more information including dates and prices. Tours+ Yanbaru Kayaking Tours Few things are more relaxing than kayaking up a quiet, mirror-smooth river bordered by mangroves surrounded by the sounds of nature. Not only medicine for the soul, kayaking can also be a great workout for the cardiovascular system as well as the upper body. Well, what are you waiting for? The Tours+ Yanbaru Kayaking expedition provides all transportation—on both land and sea—for a 2-1/2 hour

kayaking adventure amongst the mangroves of Higashi in northern Okinawa for parents and kids over 5. All you need to bring is a fresh change of clothes, a towel, sunscreen, sandals, a hat and a packed lunch with plenty of drinking water. Grab your buddies and prepare for a weekend face-off at Taiyo Golf Club. On May 16 & 17, play with your own friends while competing against other golfers in a casual game of skins. Score the lowest on any hole and win a skin. That’s it! So what’s the challenge? When playing skins, you never know what’ll happen. Sometimes all it takes is a stroke of luck for you to take home the prize. You could play terribly for 36-holes, but play one hole well and win. Or you could play wonderfully the entire time, and have the win snatched out of the palm of your hand at the very last second. The entry fee is $10, which will be returned to the winners in the form of gift certificates. The more players that enter, the bigger the purse grows. In the case of any ties for the lowest score on a hole, that hole will be “cut” completely and not count. Registration for this fun, casual game will take place on the days of the event. To participate, schedule a tee time before 9 a.m. and stop by our registration table, which will be located near the Pro Shop. For more information, call 622-2004/2006 or visit mccsokinawa.com/golf.

PCS Flowcharts

A Step-By-Step Diagram for the Major Relocation Processes

A Permanent Change of Station (PCS) move is an adventure. A PCS gives you a chance to live in different environments and experience diverse cultures. However, it can also be stressful, timeconsuming and difficult as Marines and their families are often bombarded with seemingly endless tasks that need to be completed before, during and after the move. To help with this overwhelming task, Personal & Professional Development-Resources (P&PD-R) has developed unaccompanied and accompanied PCS Flowcharts that are designed to break down the major relocation processes needed for Marines, Sailors and their families to successfully relocate to Okinawa. The flowcharts are divided into different timeframes, starting from greater than six months and ending with the arrival, with specific processes listed for each. Links and resources needed are included. Some of the

items covered are medical overseas screening, area clearance, pet importation and housing. PCS Flowcharts are also a great tool for sponsors, who may find sponsorship to be just as nerve-racking as moving to Okinawa themselves. After all, having a good sponsor helps with the hassle of PCSing quite a bit. The resources provided in the flowcharts will enable all sponsors to better assist incoming Marines, Sailors and their families, and to help keep everything on track. The flowcharts can be downloaded from the electronic MCCS Welcome Aboard Package at mccsokinawa.com/welcomeaboard. When on the site, go under the “PCS Flowcharts tab. You can also request to have it sent by calling 645-8395 or emailing MCBB_ Reloassist@usmc.mil.

Kokeshi Doll-Making Class Create a Collectable Kokeshi dolls are known to have a simple trunk and head made from wood. All other elements, such as facial features and hair, are painted on using thin lines. The body is usually decorated with floral patterns and are overall quite minimalistic in design. Although modern kokeshi are more enhanced, one defining feature is that they all lack hands, legs and feet. This traditional handcraft, which originated in the Tohoku region of northern Japan, is easily recognized across the globe as uniquely Japanese. Kokeshi, especially antiques, can be extremely collectible; but if you can’t get your hands on one, you can always design and create your own at Foster Framing and Fine Arts and the Courtney Arts and Crafts Center. Youth Sports Baseball/Softball Registration

DLPN/DEPOSITPHOTOS.COM

Play ball! Bruises, an endless cycle of dirty uniforms, countless worthwhile lessons and memories to cherish forever. Most people who played a sport as a child will tell you that they absolutely loved it, whether they enjoyed the competitive or social aspect of it—or both. Most will also tell you that if they could, they’d go back to the countless hours spent at practices and games. The same goes for parents, although having a kid on a team took up quite a bit of their already busy schedule. They’ll also tell you that the joy of cheering on their little ones, watching them improve and seeing them learn life lessons that they can take with them off the field is a feeling you can’t find anywhere else. Believe it or not, youth sports are more than just games. They’re opportunities for young children to be a part of something bigger than themselves. Also, being a part of a team helps kids develop problemsolving and time management skills, learn how to handle stress and become more confident when it comes to interacting with others. In other words, you could say that sports prepare our youth for living life as an adult. That’s not all though. Participating in sports at a young age also teaches two lessons that are not only vital for those who want to grow up to be successful, but for those who simply want to be decent people. These lessons are how to lose and how to succeed.

Since no one’s perfect, failing is inevitable. However, sports teach children how to lose gracefully, make adjustments, set new goals and most importantly—to never give up. As a result, they master how to quickly rebound from failure. They learn how to win gracefully as well, which is critical when it comes to respecting others. It doesn’t take long to figure out that sacrifices have to be made in order to win either. After all, to beat the other team, everyone has to fight to win and be the absolute best they can be by giving everything they’ve got. MCCS Youth Sports will be conducting their annual summer baseball/softball registration period for 2020 soon. Register your child ages 5 to 18 for youth baseball and softball online at mccsokinawa.com/youthsports or at any staffed MCCS Fitness Center between May 1 and June 30 for $60. Driving on Okinawa in the summertime can either be heaven or the alternative—with the performance of your air conditioner providing the defining difference between cruising along a seaside road in cool comfort or drenched discomposure. Before the true heat hits, head over to your nearest MCCS Typhoon Motors to top off the Freon in your vehicle’s air conditioning system and ensure that your summer driving is cool and comfortable.

KEEPING IT COOL! Your vehicle’s cooling system ensures the engine doesn’t overheat and runs efficiently. Over time, rust and scale build up in the radiator, along with other contaminants from old coolant fluid. Flushing and replacing these fluids is vital to prolonging the life of the radiator as it lubricates the water pump, and protects against continued rust and buildup. It is generally recommended to flush the cooling system every other year to keep your vehicle running well. It goes without saying that the warmer the weather becomes, the more important a healthy radiator will be to prevent overheating. Thankfully, Typhoon Motors island-wide are offering a 25% off special on radiator flush services throughout the month of May. Bring your vehicle to Typhoon Motors and let the professionals give your vehicle the refreshment it needs before the hot summer season.

Popular Chinese legends state that water dragons govern the rivers, seas and oceans. Every year, during the spring and summer months on Okinawa, this myth comes to life in the waters surrounding the island.

B

rilliant subtropical midday sunshine, the rhythmic reverberations of drums and hearty whistles of spectators and the straining muscles of rowers’ arms moving in perfect unison—just another normal day at a traditional Okinawan dragon boat race.

MAY 2020 | OKINAWA LIVING 55

THOMAS ALAN SMILIE

Dragon boat races are annual events held in various fishing communities throughout the prefecture beginning in the late spring and lasting into the late summer months. Although these races are popularly called hârî in some places, they are still known by their original name—hârê—in the south. The largest of these festivals is the Naha Hârî, which is held during Golden Week (five days of holiday between April 29 and May 5). The Naha Dragon Boat Races pit multi-colored vessels decorated with ferocious-looking dragons against each other in breathless sprints. Each boat is powered to the finish line by a 32-rower team. Teams are made up of Tomari, Kume and other Naha district residents, company employees as well as rowers from different countries (including contingents from US military installations). The three-day Naha Hârî Festival often draws hundreds of thousands of spectators and incorporates food booths, live band performances and nightly firework displays. And alongside the Naha Great Tug-of-War, it is considered one of the largest festivals of the year on Okinawa. Sadly, this year’s Naha Hârî Festival has been cancelled due to COVID-19. However, dragon boat races are held in ports throughout the island into late-summer so you should be able to experience one this year.

THOMAS ALAN SMILIE

MAY 2020 | OKINAWA LIVING 57

Origins of the Dragon Boat Race (and usually heeded his sage counsel) they adored playing their political court games much too much—even though these games often led to bloodshed in the court. Yuan worked long and hard for reforms to save the ailing empire. However, it wasn’t long before the emperor was beguiled by silver-tongued sycophants and Yuan was banished from the court. It is said that Chu Yuan composed some of China’s greatest poetry while wandering the countryside in exile— mostly about his fervent love for his country, and his deep concern for his homeland’s future. He made many friends among the rural populace, especially among the fishermen living beside the Mi Lo River. And as time passed, Chu Yuan’s melancholy slowly lifted.

However, upon learning of the devastation of the court at the hands of a rival kingdom, Chu Yuan fell into a dark depression. And, because he felt somehow responsible, he rowed out to the center of the river and in a display of heartfelt sorrow leaped into the water holding a great rock. Many fishermen raced out in their boats in a vain attempt to save Chu Yuan while beating on drums and splashing their oars in the water to keep the water dragons away. Although many boats were dispatched to save him, none were fast enough. It is said that the dragon boat races held in many places throughout Asia were originally held in honor of the memory of this diplomat.

TOMPIC/DEPOSITPHOTOS.COM

Most historians agree that dragon boat races originated in China, and were either brought to the island as a form of entertainment for visiting Chinese envoys, or were transferred to the Ryukyu Kingdom by islanders who saw the spectacle while visiting or studying in China. There are many interesting stories about how the races originally began in China. And, although it is only a fantastical tale, one of the most popular legends about the beginnings of dragon boat racing is the story of Chu Yuan—a faithful and honest servant of a 278 BC Chinese emperor. Chu Yuan was a poet and philosopher, and had many fine qualities in an age when corruption and unnecessary war were widespread in the empire. And while many in the government respected Yuan

THOMAS ALAN SMILIE

Itoman Hârê In the southern city of Itoman, the roots of the dragon boat race are thought to be tied to the younger brother of the ruler of Nanzan—a small kingdom in southern Okinawa. It is said that the king’s younger brother studied abroad, and while in the Nanjing province of China, he witnessed a dragon boat race and was so overwhelmed with the display that upon his return to Ryukyu (he was subsequently named the lord of Tomigusuku Castle) he ordered that copies of the dragon boats be made and began holding races in the inlet below his castle. After he was crowned the king of Nanzan in 1403, the boat races were moved to the main Nanzan trading port located in Itoman—where they are held to this day. It is said in Itoman that the dragon boat races held throughout the Ryukyu Archipelago stem from the Itoman Hârê. Unlike the Naha Hârî, dragon boat races are still called hârê in the rustic, southern city of Itoman. The southern area of Okinawa has always been known for a large population of uminchû (which is a term that literally translates into “sea person”). And, because many that live in the small southern city still depend on the seas for sustenance, tradition plays a larger part in their daily lives. Uminchû have always depended on the ocean. During ancient days they often made long, perilous journeys, carrying tribute and correspondence to the Chinese empire and southern mainland Japan and fishermen plied local seas for nourishment, harvesting the abundant riches of the ocean. Because of the Itoman’s long seafaring and fishing heritage, their hârê carries much more meaning than the gala events held elsewhere. The Itoman Hârê is heavily linked to a festival known as Kaijin-Sai (which is known as Unjami in Uchinâguchi—the language of the Ryukyus). Kaijin-Sai is observed to give thanks to the sea god for sharing the ocean’s bounty and to pray for the safety and prosperity of fishermen throughout the year. The boats used in the Itoman Hârê are smaller than those used in Naha—holding crews of 8 to 14 rowers. These boats, which are called sabanî, are made of lightweight wood and usually painted incandescent reds, yellows or blues. Their design is similar to craft used hundreds of years ago. In Itoman, dragon boat races are steeped in religious ceremony, and priestesses called nuru perform rites before and after races much as they did during ancient days. Early in the morning on the day of the festival, the priestesses of Nanzan and Itoman gather at Santinmo—a hill in the center of Aza Itoman to bless the races. And, after the races, the members of each team file up to Hakugin Shrine in the order they finished the race, to visit Itoman’s patron god Ibinme. MAY 2020 | OKINAWA LIVING 61

MCCS PHOTO

Dragon boat racing on Okinawa has changed considerably over the centuries. Today, the symbolic rituals are seen by many as nothing more than amusing entertainment. In fact, in many places, the races are as much a part of a celebration as they are for veneration or supplication. However, almost everyone who has participated in a race will probably attest to this—during hârî / hârê season, water dragons do indeed govern the clouds and rains, and rule the seas of Okinawa.

Some may wonder why many residents of the island prefer calling themselves Uchinânchu, or “Okinawans,” more than being called citizens of Japan even though they are very much so. Very few residents of other prefectures in mainland Japan formally call themselves names such as “Osakans” or “Tokyoites.” The reasons for this lie in the island’s past. Okinawa was overseen by the United States for 27 years after the Battle of Okinawa until it was returned to Japan on May 15, 1972. Before reversion, the currency that was used on Okinawa wasn’t yen, it was the U.S. dollar. Automobiles drove on the right side of the road (this was switched to left-hand side in 1978), and people from mainland Japan needed to pack their passport to enter the island. In addition, appropriate documentation and vaccinations were needed when Okinawans traveled to mainland Japan. Because of this unique situation, most Okinawans were not treated as actual citizens of the country during this period. Even before the war, Okinawa had only been an official part of Japan for a relatively short time— until 1879, it was a sovereign nation called “Ryukyu.” Many aspects of the island’s traditional culture show just as much influence from China and other Southeast Asian nations as from Japan. Today, Okinawan culture also shows heavy influences from the United States—especially in the central part of the island where several military installations still stand. Today, for quite a few Uchinânchu, the country the island belongs to doesn’t define their identity, because the unique Ryukyu culture still lives on inside their hearts—just as it did during the days of the Ryukyu Kingdom.
