eiwa Dori is a covered shopping arcade that can be accessed from the Starbucks intersection on Kokusai Street in Naha. No matter what you are looking for, you are almost certain to find it here. The shopping arcade includes Mashiki Market, where you can find fresh produce and seafood along with other Okinawan favorites like sata andagi (Okinawan donuts) and yaki imo (roasted sweet potato). can even pick a fish from the market downstairs and have it sent upstairs to be cooked by one of the many restaurants on the second floor. Elsewhere in the market, shoppers can find a 100 yen store, clothing (from yukata and jinbei to casual wear), dishes, insect pets, shisa and more. Heiwa Dori is a shopper’s paradise that is worthy of exploration on any afternoon, rain or shine.

Summer Junior Golf Clinics

he summer has arrived on Okinawa. With longer daylight hours, warmer weather and no school, it’s the perfect time to introduce your child to golf. The best way to familiarize children to the game is to enroll them into a good golf program that not only teaches but also inspires confidence on and off the course. This summer, Taiyo Golf Club is offering $30 junior golf clinics for children and teens. Topics to be covered include chipping, putting, full swing application and course etiquette. Summer Junior Golf Clinics are offered for two different age categories: 5 to 9 from 8 to 10 a.m. and

10 to 18 from 1 to 3 p.m. Sessions run July 8 to 11, July 22 to 25 and August 5 to 8, and are open to all

DoD ID card holders within the age limits. Call Taiyo Golf Club at 622-2004/2006 for details.

orld Cup fever is heating up and even though the games are being played halfway around the world while most of us are asleep, you can still enjoy a good game of soccer right here on Okinawa. FC Ryukyu is Okinawa’s very own soccer team and they play on weekends against other teams in the Japan Football League. FC Ryukyu games are a thrilling event, with an audience that is a mixture of die-hard fans, Americans and locals who are just looking for an afternoon of sport. Tickets are inexpensive and

can be purchased at Lawson’s, Family Mart or at the stadium on game day. Home games are played at one of two stadiums, either at the Okinawa City Athletic Field or the Okinawa Prefectural Sports Park Athletic Stadium in Comprehensive Park. The team’s slogan is “do our best,” where BEST stands for blood, energy, sweat and tears. The team color is a deep red, for the fighting spirit that burns brightly in Ryukyu culture and tradition, as well as to represent the red of Shuri Castle. The team emblem

is a crown, to symbolize the proud history of the Ryukyu Kingdom, and two shisa lions. The open-mouthed lion attracts victory while the closed-mouth lion keeps victory. These symbols are held up by a field of eleven stripes— one for each member of the team on the field. Immerse yourself in the strong tradition of Okinawan sports and cheer on FC Ryukyu at an upcoming game. By Lisa Leung Indelicato

Positive Parenting Seminar

P

arenting is no easy task. There are no instruction manuals or foolproof ways to raise your child to become a great person. But a parent can at least try. Throughout the years of trying to analyze the reason why our kids are what they are, we’ve developed all sorts of ways to raise a child the most ideal way. One way that we can guide our children to be respectable adults is through positivity. The Behavioral Health Family Advocacy Program is offering a Positive Parenting Program for parents of chil-

dren aged 12 and under. Topics will include creating a safe, positive and engaging learning environment, using assertive discipline and having reasonable expectations. Through this class you will learn how to convey to your children the importance of showing respect to others, being considerate, having good communication skills, independence and a healthy self-esteem. For dates, times and full class details call 645-2915 or visit mccsokinawa.com/behavioralhealth.
