f you love cars or have an automobile to show off, then there’s only one place for you to be at 5 p.m. on August 8—Hard Park Palmsapalooza. It’s a combined car show and block party at The Palms parking lot on Camp Hansen. Hard Park will give you the opportunity to admire some amazing cars and the effort that their owners have put into them. When customizing a car, people focus their efforts in a variety of areas. Some people concentrate on what’s under the hood, adding speed chips, superchargers, changing the ignition or installing a nitrous oxide system. Some people alter the dashboard, adding additional gauges for oil pressure, battery performance, voltmeters or ammeters. Other people, with a penchant for visual perfection,

may spend their time and money working on aesthetics, altering their car with a spoiler, low-profile tires, a booming stereo system, a flashy paint job, lighting, window tinting, a lower or higher frame and, of course, rims. All that work surely deserves to be rewarded. Hard Park will be awarding prizes for those participants who have worked hard on customizing their vehicle. Those who do not wish to enter in the show can simply “hard park” and mingle amongst the other car enthusiasts. There will also be a live band, DJ and adult games like the ever-popular tricycle races and remote control car races. For details or to register, please call 623-4375 or visit mccsokinawa.com/thepalms.

In addition to hosting some of the best physiques on island, the Far East Bodybuilding competition welcomes IFBB pro Víctor Martínez, winner of the 2007 Arnold Classic and runner-up at the 2007 Mr. Olympia, and 2003 Ms. International Cathy LeFrancois, both of whom will be guest posing for the night. Doors open at 3 p.m. and the finals begin at 4 p.m. There will be a free shuttle bus service from the Camp Foster Theater to Camps Courtney, Hansen, Kinser, Schwab and MCAS Futenma starting at 8 p.m. For ticket information, visit mccsokinawa.com/bodybuilding or see the ad on page nine.

Okinawan Weddings

kinawan weddings are most popular in June—right at the beginning of summer and the rainy typhoon season. The humid climate and rainy days are not enough to send brides running from this month. June is considered the best month to “tie the knot,” an idea adopted from the Roman tradition of celebrating Juno, the goddess of marriage and childbirth, more than 2,000 years ago. An Okinawan wedding tends to center around friends and relatives just as much as it focuses on the bride and groom. Wedding ceremonies are typically held in a Christian-style chapel purely for the romantic flair and less for the religious aspect, which is why most hotels on the island have a chapel. A typical Okinawan wedding may have around 300 to 500 guests, differentiating itself from a Japanese wedding in which 80 guests is considered large. The wedding consists of a Westernstyle wedding ceremony, as well as

performances and classic dances, usually performed by friends, co-workers and relatives of the couple. The bride and groom also make multiple attire changes throughout the night, ranging from kimono to typical Westernstyle wedding dresses, and very bright and colorful dresses. Toward the end of the reception, the bride reads a thank you and farewell letter to her parents, and then presents them with a gift, often flowers for their care and support. The groom then reads a thank you letter to all of their guests and offers a kanpai, a

toast to those attending the wedding. It is standard for a guest to bring a oshūgi-bukuro, which is a special envelope for weddings where guests commonly give a gift of around 10,000 to 30,000 yen. Okinawan weddings generally include plenty of alcohol and food, and if you are ever fortunate enough to attend one, be prepared to be impressed and entertained for hours into the night. There’s nothing quite like a carefree sunset stroll on the beach. This photo was taken on Sunset Beach in American Village. To get there, head north from Camp Foster’s Kitamae (commissary) Gate. Turn left at the intersection with Starbucks on your left and Camp Lester on your right. Continue straight until you reach the end of the road. A parking lot for the beach will be on your left.

he military community is one big family, so where better to volunteer your time than by helping out your extended military family? The Single Marine Program (SMP) strives to improve the quality of life for unaccompanied Marines and Sailors stationed on Okinawa with great activities and trips, but they can’t achieve that goal without support from the community. SMP is looking for volunteers to help make Okinawa home for those who are here alone. Have a skill or

knowledge of the island you can share? Want to bake some goodies or supply snacks for the SMP centers? Have a set of wheels that you could use to help out with activity transportation? You can even just stop by the centers on weekends or holidays to lend a smiling face to those who are still getting familiar with the island. SMP has centers on Camps Kinser, Foster, Courtney, Hansen and Schwab. Visit mccsokinawa.com/smp or call 645-3681 to find out how you can help.

There are currently no studies that can tell us if the multivitamin is definitively helpful or harmful for our health.
