ove the island life but find Okinawa a little too cramped sometimes? Do you need to take it even easier than the main island’s often lazy beaches allow? Don’t worry—there is a place for you. It’s called Kouri Island. There’s not much to Kouri Island, and that’s what makes it great. The island is still somehow unscathed by flocks of tourists, Family Marts and abandoned barbeque pits. Kouri Island is perfect for exploring and discovering new beaches that feel like your own private

inside

resort. Diving and snorkeling here is excellent too. One of the great wreck-diving destinations, the USS Emmons, is off the coast of Kouri Island. The island is north of Nago and you can reach it by bridge. To get to Kouri Island, start heading north towards Nago. Take a left onto route 110, toward Yagaji Island. Then take a right on route 247, and you’ll see the bridge leading to the island. Here is a Google map link: http://goo.gl/4OaYTy

n tropical climates like Okinawa, tires disintegrate more quickly than in temperate climates, requiring extra consideration for your tires on island. Enjoy big savings on tires at your nearest Typhoon Motors through August. If you are unsure whether you need new tires just by looking at their basic lack of tread or obvious baldness, try the simple penny test. Place the penny between the grooves on the top of your tire and if you can see the top of Abraham Lincoln’s head, chances are you probably need new tires. Good tires are especially important on Okinawa as rain and humidity make the roads more slick. Plus, if you are selling your car, you can increase its resale value with a fresh set of tires in place. For more information, call your nearest Typhoon Motors on Camps Foster, Kinser, Courtney or Hansen or visit them online at mccokinawa.com/typhoonmotors or on Facebook. .

japanese phrase of the week

C

Happy Birthday! Tanjyoubi omedetou gozaimasu! For details about FREE Japanese language classes, please call Marine & Family Programs–Resources at 645-2104/2106.

ourtney: One of my favorite ways to stay cool in the summer when I was growing up in Florida was to make regular visits to 7-Eleven for Slurpees. Is there an Okinawan alternative? I’m starting to melt over here. Ryan: While there is nothing quite like a 7-Eleven Slurpee (which you can purchase in mainland Japan 7-Eleven’s), the Japanese icy treat of choice is kakigori. It’s shaved ice flavored with syrup and condensed milk, usually served in a bowl. C: A bowl indicates that it’s not as portable as a Slurpee in a convenient cup, but I guess it will suffice. Is this why I’ve seen lots of ice-shaving devices in the local stores lately—to make your own kakigori at home? R: Yeah, but I’ve never used a home kakigori machine that was actually any good. Most of the ones you see in stores are hand-cranked ice shavers and they don’t shave the ice nearly as finely. Plus, by the time

KakigÔri

you’re done, you’re too tired to eat. A good kakigori’s ice should have a cloud-like consistency. If you’re going to buy one for the house, get a solid electric one. C: If I don’t want to go to the trouble of making my own, which I don’t, where could I buy already shaved kakigori?

R: In the summer, you can find it anywhere. It’s a staple at festivals, street vendors, and a common summer dessert at restaurants and cafes. You might see it served alongside ice cream or as Okinawan zenzai (which is shaved ice topped with sweet azuki beans or tapioca pearls).

Top 5 Reasons to Hit the Pool

W

e have devised many ways to cool off such as air conditioning and popsicles, but nothing is as immediately refreshing as a dip in the pool. But there’s more to it than that. Here are the top five reasons to visit your local MCCS pool this summer: 1. Heart Health: Swimming is great cardiovascular work, keeping your heart strong. 2. Build Muscle: Swimming is a full body workout and will build significant amount of muscle. 3. Cross Training: Mixing some low impact training to your higher impact training will balance out

your current regimen. 4. Flexibility: It may be counterintuitive to summer weather, but spending some time in a heated pool can relax the muscles and increase flexibility while easing muscle soreness. 5. Social Outlet: Joining the Okinawa Dolphins the Masters swim team or a triathlon training group is a great way to make new friends with common interests. Visit mccsokinawa.com/aquatics or find us on Facebook for a full schedule and hours for all the MCCS pools on island.
