Herb is the word.
Grow them indoors and out to spice up dining and decor. Whether you’re cooking, infusing oils, making perfume or just enjoying the aroma, herbs are some of the most versatile plants in the garden. They are also perfect addition to a small space garden as you can grow one or ten successfully. Create an herb garden outdoors using raised beds and containers. And, don’t forget to bring these plants indoors. Not only do indoor herb gardens look great as decor, but you’ll love the convenience of snipping off fresh herbs while you’re cooking. Here are some of our favorites:
Rosemary likes arid and sunny locations and is a hardy perennial in Hampton Roads. The fragrance of this herb will fill the garden. Use with meat dishes, added to salad dressings, on the grill and in lemonade. Chives are one of the most popular herbs. Chives are easy to grow and produce over a long season. Use in salads, in sauces, or as a garnish.
Oregano is an easy to grow and important culinary herb. Used for the
flavor of its leaves, it has an aromatic and slightly bitter taste which can vary in intensity. Use in marinara sauces, pizza, and soups or stews.
Mint will grow in damp soil with part shade to full sun. It is a vigorous grower often grown in pots to keep it contained. Use in beverages, cookies, or jellies.
Basil is considered the “king of herbs” due to its many uses. It is best planted outside after the average last frost date. Use it in tomato dishes, in drinks, with fruit, and in soups or stews. It is also the main ingredient in pesto.
aqua farm
Self-cleaning fish tank that grows food! Just fill with water, add fish & plant seeds. This combination of herb garden and self-cleaning fish tank creates an ecosystem that makes growing edible greens easy and fun. The Aquafarm comes with everything needed to get started including organic seeds, a chemical free de-chlorinator, and a sampling packet of fish food. The basil, mint, spinach, baby greens and other edibles will thrive as nutrient-rich water is circulated past their roots. That process purifies the water, which is sent back to the 3-gallon tank - creating a happy, health habitat for fish.

greenleaf fertiliZer new look. same trusty product. Greenleaf has been a McDonald Garden Center staple for years and now it’s even better! We are proud to introduce our new 3-pound container with an easy-to-use lid and scoop. Greenleaf was developed specifically for plants in Hampton Roads and is a great general all-purpose fertilizer. It releases nutrients slowly and we recommend using it in containers, planting beds, shrubs, trees, perennials, annuals and more. In fact, it’s what we use to fertilize our plants!

fresh from your backyard Satsuma orange trees Satsumas are sweet, juicy mandarin oranges that are easy to peel and are virtually seed-free. The traditional season for this cold hardy citrus is mid to late October through February. Satsuma trees are small, reaching a height of 4 to 6 feet and are cold tolerant to about 26 degrees F. Satsuma trees will grow in the landscape or in containers. First introduced from Japan in 1878, Satsumas produce fragrant white blossoms in March and April, with the fruit turning bright orange as it ripens in late October.
